I got introduced to this old English guy Jon the other day, who runs the farm group. He used to be the right hand man for the agriculture minister of the Labour party (I think!?). He's very cool. I hadn’t realised how much emotional stress had built up, and I burst into tears on him.. Oops! Anyway.. he was so good about it. He's suggested I go and see Krishna at the Solitude community. Got another puncture today.. think the tyre needs replacing. Had such a good conversation with the lovely guy at the bike place again. He was born here.. long before Auroville even existed, and has obviously seen many changes. We chatted about Auroville, and how from the outside things can look rosy, but from the inside things can be very different. We also ... read more

Since I last wrote I have moved capsules (don't waste any time me ;c) I'm now above the communal area, which isn't as private but I think I'm gonna be happier there. Been feeling a bit low & lonely actually, which is understandable. I suppose I was expecting to feel part of the community here.. but I’m not sure this is a ‘community’ really, not in the true sense of the word. To me, at the moment, it feels like 3 families not functioning very well together. I suppose to them, I am just another visitor passing through. Gonna try and put together an action plan for the next couple of weeks to cheer myself up. Must try and get the most out of being here. At least I'm having some time off the booze etc. ... read more

The Journey Begins.. Ok.. so I arrived here to Auroville (an eco-city in the making!) in the early hours on the 28th of Nov. Flight was good overall, good old BA. Couldn't quite believe I was India, as the leaving date had snuck up and bitten me on the arse like a manky dog! (No, not you Moses ;c) Wasn't quite sure what to expect on arrival, but had a feeling it might be a bit mental. As those of you who have been to India know.. it never ceases to surprise. I had organised a taxi to pick me up from Chenni airport and take me Auroville, as last time (when I flew into Delhi) I got totally skanked, mainly due to sleep dep. It was a right hairy taxi ride.. 3 hours through monsoon ... read more

Bit of a funny sort of day. Started off with an early walk while it was still cool, and saw the French caff, Hot Bread. Thought I couldn't leave Pondicherry without sampling their croissants, so I did, and jolly nice too. And the coffee. Only thing was, I had already got my breakfast ordered at the hotel...I couldn't manage it all, but at least I didn't need lunch! Bits of footslogging, bits of shopping - a wheelie case to make coming home easier and a cooling salwar kameez because it's SO HOT, bits of coming home to rest. After the non-lunch, and a bit of argy-bargy round getting money changed - Indian beaurocracy rules - I suddenly lost the plot, and asked a rickshaw dtriver how much he'd charge to take me to the beach, 8 ... read more

The following is an unsolicited testimonial for CouchSurfing. No money has changed hands in the production of this advert! In case you don't CouchSurfing is an online community in which travellers offer hospiatlity, and make use of hospitality offered while on the road. It's based on the premise that this makes travelling more affordable, but more importantly, gives travellers the opportunity to experience the community they're visiting at first hand, rather than in the somewhat detached way hotels and so forth can offer Bit of a long lead in though. In Thanjavur I stayed with Gwen, an American doing post graduate research at the University there. We'd exchanged emails over a month or two, so she didn't feel like a stranger when I met her. She gave me a wonderful welcome and time with her, so ... read more

Loving it here: or I was until a buffalo peed all over me in the market this morning, I was following it too closely..... Last night, I WOULD have slept well, if the women street cleaners hadn't had cheerful conversations with each other as they worked away a street or so apart, if the stray dogs, 9 of them, hadn't had a fight to end all fights lower down the street (i.e. too far away to pour water over) and if the builders hadn't come to renovate the house opposite at 6.30 a.m - again with much happy calling to one another. I should tell you that 3 out of the 5 builders is a woman: This is common. They wear saris, and kerchiefs on their heads and do the same work as the men. Still, that ... read more

In the end, more travelling, more lugging round the wretyched (heavy) rucsac just lost its appeal. I rejected the chance of a night in Chidambaram to see yet another temple, and came through to here the only way possible - on 2 buses. You wait till you see the photos of them, the first in particular. Thanjavur to Chidambaram is nearly 5 hours - not because the road is so long, but because the roads are so dreadful, and the stops so frequent. At Kumbakonam we stopped for 20 minutes at te bus stand while similarly ancient contraptions belched exhaust, and everybody honked loudly and insistently and incessantly at evereyone else. With my luggage in tow, I was obliged to take the font seat with its bird's eye view of all the near misses. What between ... read more

Mamallapuram Mamallapuram is a fishing vilage about 3 hours south of Chennai. We spent a couple of days there relaxing on the beach and reading books, as well as looking around some of the few shops they had in town. On the bus to Mamallapuram from Chennai... surprisingly more comfortable than it looks. Mamallapuram is famous for stone carvings. This is a beach temple created by local carvers in the 8th century. There are m... read more

So this is going to be my last night here in Pondicherry, and i am going to miss it like mad...i love so mant things about it, and have really gottern used to the Indian ways of doing things that it is really going to be hard to go to another Country and get used to their way of doing things. I am so happy that i ended my trip in India on such a good note, i am also most forgive all the horrible men and the heat that hotter then anywhere i have ever been before. I have even managed to get some clothes made for me, as the Indian clothes/cut and material are so much nicer to wear in this heat, it was a mision to get them made, but they look really ... read more
