We took a tuk tuk To see the India Gate Wow it's impressive! Just a quick entry since I've been very, very lazy in updating my blog...just wanted to let all know that I'm having an amazing time here in India. Today I took it pretty easy. I did a little bit of sightseeing with Robyn and David. After a bit of negotiation with the auto rickshaw driver we were on our way to see India Gate...well sort of. The driver had to check in with his brother...I think he wanted to double check where it was he was going to be taking us. The India Gate is a concrete memorial for all Indian soldiers. It is quite an impressive structure that my pictures cannot do justice partly because it is so sunny out today. It ... read more

Dirty in Delhi Back where we started the tour Where I met Robyn. We got back to Delhi in the morning and dropped off our stuff into one of the day rooms since my own personal room was not yet made up. Instead of just hanging around the hotel doing nothing I decided to join Mel and Rachel on a little trip out to Connaught Place. Apparently nothing is open on Sunday before noon other than some street vendors. Oh well. Got me out and about. The group all met up for lunch for one final goodbye. We went to the sweets shop around the corner and had a mini thali. Best value for your rupee! So much food for only 60 Rs. After lunch there were quite a few goodbyes. Then a few of us, ... read more

Crowded, crowded bus. No sense of personal space Packed in like sardines. I had my first taste of riding a public bus in New Delhi. Now this is something that I'll never forget. The 13 of us jam onto an already crowded bus. Translink could learn a few things about getting people to "move to the back of the bus" because we were really jam packed...no room to move. But I must admit it did make it easier to stay standing on a moving bus when we were all jam packed in there! The longer we were on the bus, the less crowded it got and I eventually even got a seat to sit down on! When I was able to see out of the window I saw some different sights. Like the row of men's ... read more

Day one. New Delhi. Wander the streets with new pals. Culture shock is here? Yet again a mix of emotions when leaving Bangkok. Sad to say good bye to Thailand. Excited to see what India had in store for me. Anxious because I was about to fly off to a new country that I have never visited and wasn't sure what to expect. I once again was the last person from my tour to depart from the Vieng Tai Hotel, my home on and off for the last 5 weeks. I bet the hotel staff there were wondering when I was gonna leave. haha I was really lucky to have started talking to Hammid at the airport while waiting to board our flight. She is originally Burmese but grew up in Washington, DC. She'll be working ... read more

So Final thoughts and reflections on India before my flight back to America tonight... Seeing the Taj Mahal was a perfect way to end the trip. The Taj was one of the few things that was incredibly beautiful in its form and symmetry that made me catch my breath. Other places and sights were beautiful but not awe inspiring unfortunately. At the train station, I just happened to meet a couple from San Francisco and while I was sitting with them these Indian girls came up to us. Their sincerity and generosity overwhelmed me as they came up to us (after introducing themselves) and let us sample burfi (milklike fudge) and then gave us an entire unopened box of petha (candied pumpkin). These people had just met us yet treated us like old friends and didn't ... read more

I think I've emerged relatively unscathed from this two day train ride from Southern India to the capital of India, New Delhi. My stomach seems to be okay after eating nothing but train food and I have all my luggage with me! The toilets are okay but a bit dicey as the contents of the toilet dump directly onto the train tracks so you have to keep your possessions close in hand. The ride was actually pretty fun as I did nothing but eat and try new food. I guess certain train stations are famous for regional foods they produce well so when the train stops for a few minutes at the station, people make a mad dash to the vendor. I had some delicious pineapple juice at the Vijayawada train station in Andhra Pradesh. I ... read more

Hello everyone, This is just a quick blog to say we arrived safely in Delhi and are awaiting the start of our Golden triangle tour. First impressions are that people are very freindly but pushy and the place needs a good clean! The car horns continue right through the night. Have been to a real Indian curry house. I had Muttun Biryani and Cindy had Chana Massala but this was not a touch on Cathie and Justin's curry! They made it mild without us even asking but Cindy's mouth was tingling from the spicyness... Got to go and get a tour bus.. Will write soon. Hope your are all well Luv Cinders and James... read more

Well our first night in India was not the most welcoming one. We arrived to the new delhi airport at around 12:30, got a cab to our hostel we booked to find there was no room. we were taken to a 24 hour tourist center, where a gentleman tried to sell us his entire travel package for india. we explained we only wanted a hotel for the night, but alas, he told us all the hotels were booked..we would be better to get on a train that night to go to another city. i asked to speak to some hotels directly, as we were both quite suspicious of all of delhi being conveniently booked. the fellow became quite offended that we didn't trust him. this went on for hours. eventually, he found one spot left in ... read more

I must say this it is best to not have relatives in a foreign country. They try to control and manage all your activities. I have been spending time in Delhi and it has been wonderful but when the relatives try to manage everything it becomes a bit of a problem. The best part is that they know everything and know where to go, also if they are wealthy like my Uncle they will have cars and drivers as many indians do. India is an amazing place, kinda of like organized chaos but one could spend years here and only touch the surface of this amazing country. The past few days I have seen a lot of tourist things and tommorrow I am headed to Nagpur to see my cousins 2 day wedding which should be ... read more
