Today we traveled to the many historical sites in Delhi. We began with a trip to the Bahai Temple (Lotus Temple) and the Muslim Tower, Qutab Minar. We then ate lunch at a rather expensive Indian restaurant that was very similar to the ones we have in the states. Bean's dreams came true and he sat with a snake charmer as he coaxed a cobra from his basket. We finished the day off with a trip to Old Delhi and the Jama Masjid mosque. This mosque is supposedly the largest in the world and seats over 20,000 people. From the steps of the mosque we could see the Old Delhi markets which held the most amount of people I have ever seen in my life. The enormous Red Fort loomed in the background beyond the mass ... read more

I have been in Delhi for 2 days and am completely blown away. I have been staying with my uncle and he has helped to show me India from a local perspective. I am no longer the backpacker traveler but someone who sees them as outsiders. I have seen all the tourist sites which are amazing but what is more amazing are the people of India and its culture. The culture here is soo rich and deep, one could spend the rest of your life exploring the people, the religion and its culture. Everyday is wildly different and unique. It is everything opposite the US. Instead of organzed traffice you have organzed chaos, instead of quite clean streets you have people everywhere etc, etc. The one overriding thing is that you feel human here and alive!, ... read more

After our two long flights, a very confusing paris air terminal, and no sleep for about 34 hours we are finally here. We got a hotel reservation from the airport tourist office, and slept until almost lunch time. We are now venturing around Connaught Place in Delhi. This is the main circle. Our next stop is to find some food and tonights place to stay. I guess our most fun experience so far in India was the taxi ride from the airport. There are virtually no traffic laws and horns are constantly honking. We also met a wonderful lady on the plane who was from Delhi. She gave us a lot of information and even offered her phone number if we needed anything. It is time to find something to eat, so I will post again ... read more

Hello, Now the time has nearly come for us to depart on our epic voyage (don't worry further journal entries will be more exciting than this one!). Our first destination is Delhi (20th Jan) where we will be picked up at the Airport and taken to our hotel in downtown New-delhi. We will then be departing on a week tour of the 'Golden Triangle'. Taking in the Taj Mahal, the Red fort and other delights. So we will be concentrating on central Northern India. Nice little acclimatiser. Don't worry, lots of pictures to follow. Well, I didn't manage to catch the 10am bus on Monday morning, I met a bloke from Holland called Ric on Sunday night over a beer and soon it turned into a big group of us from Germany, England, Holland and Ireland. Two guys from Ireland, George and John, were also heading over to Amritsar and were planning on getting the earlier, and quicker, 5am bus on Tuesday morning. I hadn't wanted to get this bus as it meant getting up at 4am and getting a taxi down to Dharamsala to the bus station in the dark, alone. So we arranged to meet at 4.30am on Tuesday morning and go together. I had a nice lazy day on the Monday and happily bumped into Lydia again at dinner time, a quick beer (as you can tell, ... read more

Thank you everyone for your messages and comments, it is so good to hear from you all, if you don't want me sending you reminders about my updates just let me know and I'll stop bugging you! Well, I've spent a few days in Delhi now and am feeling a lot more relaxed about being here and I have my head around things a bit more. I do keep having these weird moments where I wonder what on earth I am doing all the way over here when everyone is all the way over there. Also it's weird not having a job to think about, I know I've only been going for a week so it should just feel the same as being on holiday but its strange, I feel a bit rootless at the moment, ... read more

Well, here I am in India. After my wonderful brother left arather teary eyedmeatthe airport I had a nice uneventful flight, watching friends and eating curry - pretty much like a Friday night at Morrish road to be honest!! I was met at the airport by Ankur, who was holding a sign with my name on it - brilliant!!! Then I was taken to Sanjay and Preeti's apartment. Preeti is Raj's niece - I think, and I worked with Raj at the Healthare Commission, so basically they have no idea who I am, but I was sat down to lunch as soon as I arrived and made to feel very welcome, especially by Neah, there lovely little daughter who never stops talking! It was a typical Indian lunch, just the sort of thing they usually eat ... read more
