Well, I have arrived. Actually, I arrived a while ago but it has taken me a while to update this site due to some communications problems here in Delhi. Yesterday was independance day, and due to the holiday communications have been shut down in order to prevent potential terrorist communications (or so I was told). I got here on the 14th around noon, and after a hair rasing cab ride and some wandering around I managed to get checked into my hotel by around 3:30 p.m. I basically just crashed right away since I hadnt slept on the planes at all. The next morning I though I would head out to Connaught place and see if I could make my way around to some of the sights. I was in for a bit of a surprise..... ... read more

To fly from Bangkok to New Delhi takes a mere 3 hrs, a pleasant flight with good entertainment and food aboard Jet Airline’s Boeing 737-800. It would however be a further 6 hours after landing at a wet Delhi International Airport before I arrived at my hotel at 03:00 in the morning … welcome to India. First impression from the plane before landing at 21:05 was how dark the city was. After the bustling metropolises of Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Saigon which are lit up like Christmas trees, Delhi only had a few isolated pockets of street lights emitting a dim orange glow. After collecting my bags and clearing customs I joined a queue to hire a pre-paid taxi into Delhi city. The line was not moving very quickly, in fact the line was not moving ... read more

July 26-27, 2008 Delhi - Old and New I ventured out to see the capital city today….hired an air conditioned cab and driver an shared it with a young Czech woman who is traveling alone also…8 hrs, $10 each. Wow what an amazing city! Vast sprawling parks coupled with spectacular architecture both very old and new had me feel the diverse history and political landscape that has punctuated the city for hundreds of years. Parliament was a delight to visit….with it’s incredible offices housed in magnificent Indian architecture. These buildings are majestic wonders that are nothing short of brilliance. When I walked around Lal Quila, barefoot in Jama Masjid and Humayun’s tomb(mini Taj Mahal) I was awe struck and transported back to the height of Mughal dominance. All day what was prominent in my mind was ... read more

July 23, 2008 After about 29 hrs traveling from Reno, Nevada I arrived in Delhi. The airport is typically in dire need of upgrades as per usual for countries such as this. The taxi that was suppose to come from the hotel did not show…so I called them from the airport. My first taste of Indian touts was right there. A taxi driver man who said he would take us to the hotel tried to convince us that my hotel would never show up and they were terrible business people for making believe they would. He had a better hotel to take me to of course for less money. My hotel read my email as 12:15 pm…meaning at night..I said noon. It so happened everyone in the hotel had a ride from the airport or train ... read more

026 - India - Delhi 07/25/08 - 07/30/08 Delhi and the Taj Where do I begin with India? Where can I begin? It's like attempting to draw the first stroke in a painting when you don't know which color to choose, and there's a billion different shades to pick from. Prior to arriving we asked every veteran-India traveler to tell us what it's all about. We read the travel books and some pleasure books*, and tried to prepare ourselves for what lay ahead. Sure enough, it was like nothing we could have imagined. Okay, the basics first. It's crowded. There's well over one billion people in the country (the States has about 300 million). The ratio of (Indian) men to women on the streets feels like 100:1. There's more poverty than I've ever seen and many ... read more

We made it here alive! A slight delay in London meant the flight didn’t take off until around 3½hrs later than expected. On the plus side, it didn’t get into Delhi until 3hrs later than expected, which meant a more realistic arrival time of 9am. Long haul flights are never the most comfortable, and I know it isn’t nice to take pleasure in other people’s pain, but I did feel slightly happier with my own seat when the Indian fella in the row next to us vomited over the English girl sitting beside him. She was not impressed! I am afraid I didn’t have the camera for that one. We were collected from the airport and driven back to the hotel, and I think I can safely say the traffic in Delhi is mental. A good ... read more
