By brother Joe and his wife Candace came for a visit early in 2008. They made a stop in London first...and more than their share of travel issues...but made it to us right on time on October 9th. We had a great time with them and Joe did a wonderful job telling the story of their trip. "As we were leaving the airport Jennifer asked if we were hungry, we said yes and decided our first stop in Delhi would be the America Club (a part of the US embassy). On our drive over I was surprised by many of the sites and sounds of Delhi, there are a huge number of people here. I would imagine it would be difficult to figure out an exact number because many live in shanty towns along the highways ... read more

On our first visit to India, three years ago, we were lucky enough to be invited to visit the parents of a work mate of Marg's. We didn't realise just how lucky we were to take up this offer. Kavita's parents, Nimi & Rupi, live in the Sunder Nagar colony of New Delhi, probably comparable to the Toorak of Melbourne. I remember catching a cab from the airport to their address & being most impressed as we passed by some very nice areas of the city. We were then delighted to discover the house was a three storey structure. The top floor being the residence of our hosts & a second floor apartment that was to be ours for the stay. Further to this their household included the cook, the houseboy, a driver and a part-time ... read more

December 2007 The snow is falling, heavily, here in Toronto, and I am casting my mind back to the last two weeks I spent in India. The two highlights were Jaidev's naming day and the wedding of Ajay's cousin. In between, I made a new friend, Divya, spent a day at Qtub Minar, one of Delhi's world heritage sites (the city has four!), went shopping and TRIED to go see the hit movie, Om Shanti Om (with no success). I felt very honoured and privileged to be part of the baby's naming ceremony, a very big occasion in every Indian child's life. Jaidev is Ajay's baby nephew, born in September. The family postponed the ceremony so that I could attend, and it was really great that we were all there, including the baby's very proud Tau ... read more

Toronto, December 7, 2007 I am actually writing this at home, at my desk, in Toronto, with the cold blue morning light reminding me that I am now back in a cold, northern country, having left the warmth and vibrant colour of India behind. I had every intention of writing travel blog entries while I was in India, from November 5-28, 2007 -- but I was too taken up with just being there. Socializing, experiencing, living and feeling that familiar sense of sensory overload India excels in, and that I find so addictive. I remember reading somewhere about the sweetness of the first sip of your second martini. Likewise, returning to India for the second time for me was a sweetly sublime experience that I am still savouring. The first trip (Dec 2005 - June 2006) ... read more

Today we called into the Xansa offices in Noida which is part of Delhi and met with Tarun and Manisha. Carol was really impressed with the high standards of the accomodation and particularly the creche. We then left to visit one of the schools that Steria/Xansa sponsor as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility programme. Sumi (from Srinagar!) who is a real star and works very hard to get resources for the schoolchildren took us along. Coming from England it is difficult to describe how little the school has. It is for the poorest children who otherwise wouldn't get any education at all. Originally there were not only no school buildings (so that if it rained the schoolchilden had to go home (they sat underneath a tree for a classroom), but no toilets or clean water. ... read more

Here is a very quick first installment of our travels. We arrived in Delhi last Fri, but seems like weeka ago now. Straight away we were thrown in at the deep end. Our taxi ride from the airport was a indication o what was to come. Despute being three lanes separating the motorway, our taxi diver quite happil drove down the middle of the lane line, taking up two lanes, and we were to find this was the India way of driving. You cant drive without honking, but if you can drive in Delhi, you can drive anywhere else in the world, our taxi driver told us. Sure ...... Anyway, that day they were celebrating Dwali. It made our experience extra special as we were able to watch them celebrate what would be their version of ... read more

Message from Carol - It seems a long time since we had lunch with the family on Sunday; however we have managed to get to India with a minimum of fuss. We flew into Delhi on a very big bird; a different proposition from Ryanair; through customs etc in record time, probably because it was 2am and our driver was waiting to whisk us off to the hotel. An amazing number of staff was still busy cleaning and watering as we arrived. Our suite in the Jaypee Vasant is rather swish with a beautiful sitting room and a vast bed in a very tasteful bedroom with lovely en suite “facilities”. It’s now 11.30am and the temperature is 29 degrees. Ian had a dosa ( a pancake type wrap made of lentils) filled with spicy potato and ... read more

Last weekend was Diwali ( November 8 - November 11), once again I can't remember all the details about why Diwali is celebrated but I'm sure there is a website out there with all the details. I do know that it is the festival of lights and our school put on a nice performance with a great play about the celebration. People light their homes with what we would call Christmas lights, put out candles and on the day of Diwali set firecrackers and fireworks off all over the place. People walk around saying Happy Diwali which reminded me of Christmas. They also give gifts and sweets and it's the puja day of the goddess Lakshmi. You set out candles to welcome her and hope for prosperity for the rest of the year. I went to ... read more

DELHI - (Our) gateway to India We have arrived in Delhi and it's an exciting and sobering introduction to India. Getting off the plane we were confronted by dozens of guys trying to stand in front of us and pitch their taxi and tour services to us. Instantly it became apparent (as we fully expected) that people are not shy about trying to engage / solicit you, and your personal space often becomes a rare luxury. However Lauren's friend Samir (who lives here) had organized us a driver to take us to his place where we have stayed for the first 3 days. Samir has been absolutely fantastic and taken amazingly good care of us. Not only have we been staying with him, but he has also taken us on a guided tour of Delhi, taken ... read more

My adventure started on a dubious note of misread emails and missing 'pm' off the 2nd page! I had the cab booked, my e-ticket ready and my bag packed. I left home at 4 am and got to the airport at 20 past. Plenty of time to book in, get a coffee and relax before the flight. There was no mention of the flight on the monitors and turns out that the flight was in the pm not am. Yes, fool that I am, could have stayed in bed however it gave me an opportunity to do some last minute buys like anti malaria and all that essencial items that I had not had time to purchase because of work. So several hours later am stuffing my hand luggage in an overhead and asking a surly ... read more
