From Bombay we took a flight down south to Trivandrium in Kerala for four days of relaxing by the beach. Our hotel, run by a rather odd Dutch guy, was very pleasant, situated amongst palm trees and small alleyways. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't on our side. Although warm, the sun decided to take it's own vacation for the majority of the time and rain decided to do cover duty! Luckily we found ourselves a half day activity indoors at the local catering college. We wlked in the day before and asked the Principal if we could have a lesson on Kerlan cooking with one of his chef's. After a little bit of persuading he said yes and the next day we had an amazing lesson with a very enthusiastic chef. He initially took us into a ... read more

Today is my last day in Kerala and I am sad to be leaving this beautiful area in India. I decided to start my discovery of India here as I had heard that it was beautiful, peaceful and would be an easy introduction to traveling through India. I think this is all true. I flew into Delhi just before Christmas and was glad to get out of the mayhem the next morning. My hotel in Delhi was OK but although there was hot water there was no power after midnight. Welcome to India! I flew to Cochin with Kingfisher airlines - very modern and efficient despite the thick fog at Delhi that delayed all the planes taking off till mid morning. Fort Cochin is fairly quiet for a Indian town and there are palm trees all ... read more

January 5 I am going to try and upload some pictures. This place is so beautiful. And there are so many things to photograph. A professional would go nuts. The women all wear beautiful, colourful saris; there are so many traditional ways of life every place you look -- such as fishermen hauling in nets on the beach and women gathered at the well to fetch water. Gorgeous sunsets, thick foliage, amazing birds -- huge eagles swooping over the beach -- flowers. I could go on and on. Yesterday I saw a huge elephant with an enormous gold panel hanging over his forhead and snout. He is one of many arriving for the festival. I saw a big crow eating somehting on the beach and when I investigated I saw it was a giant, pale-coloured claw ... read more

Wow, a great way to celebrate the holidays. Started with a sampling of the Kerala coast, up to the 'jungle lodge' and finished back on the coast. The holidays began with an enjoyable backwater tour thru the canals along Kochi in both a rice barge and later a narrow wooden canoe. Learned about calcium carbonate production for cement and coir making (jute made from coconut husks). A delicious seafood platter for Christmas day and then up to the jungle lodge. The ride up was fascinating with its mixture of lots and lots of people and the occassional elephant on the road, even saw one enjoying a bath in the river. The lodge was nestled in a coffee plantation. Much to our amazement, 5 minutes into our jeep safari a tiger appears about 100 ft down the ... read more

I am in Kerala, the southern most state in India, a tropical paradise covered in palm trees and fringed with beautiful beaches. It's amazing here. Warm (30 C. every day), fresh fruits and vegetables to eat, gorgeous people, always friendly and smiling. I love Kerala! (I knew I would.) This state is the spice capital of India, and they also grow tea here and do a lot of fishing. I am staying at an ayurvedic resort called Shinsiva. There are a lot of ayurvedic resorts aorund here, Kerala is famous for this ancient, holistic form of Indian health care. I get oil massages and other specialzed treatments every day and a special diet of healthful, fresh and flavourful foods -- full of fresh herbs and spices. This is my idea of heaven. Nothing to do but ... read more

Picture yourself on a boat by a river, with palm trees lining the shore, fine Keralan cuisine being cooked up for you in the galley, and only the distant sound of a million hungry mosquitoes heading ever closer to disturb the tranquility. For the last two days we've been cruising the Keralan backwaters on a traditional rice boat. The boat has three crew- a pilot, an engine man and a chef- but otherwise we had the boat to ourselves- well, if you don't count the aforementioned insect chums and a good complement of geckos scampering around, eating them. The feel of this part of India is very laid back. The people are friendly, always waving from the shore as we drift past. It's a largely Christian area and so there are lots of brightly painted churches ... read more

After a few days of rest in Mumbai, we joined our good friend Neha for a whirlwind 10-day tour of the gorgeous south Indian state of Kerala. Kerala has earned the reputation as "God's Own Country" due to it's gorgeous beaches, endless swaying palm trees, vibrant sunshine, and the charming maze of lakes, rivers and waterways that criss cross the countryside. We nourished mind, body and soul touring tea and spice plantations and enjoying a variety of elaborate Ayurvedic treatments and massages. To open the photo album, double click on the first photo. We also experienced Christmas Indian style. The Apostle Thomas visited India during his lifetime and as a result Kerala is 20% Christian. It was really interesting to see the similarities and differences in how Christmas was celebrated. ... read more

Hi, I had a wonderfull week in Varkala. The beach is less beautiful then Palolem in Goa but I met very nice people so I had a very good time. I have escaped from the rain in Kodaikanal just to discover that it was raining in Varkala but just for one day. The Kerala people say that the rain is originated by a cyclone near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It is not Kerala fault but Tamil Nadu fault. Just next to the beach there is a cliff and all the restaurants and hotels are situated there. All restaurants present fish to eat so one has just to pick. So everyday I have picked a big fish that was delightfully cooked. After the cliff ends, to the north, there is nice fishernen scenary and this is more a ... read more

This is a promotional speel for the best hotel in The Wayanad! We stayed here for a couple of days and I promised the manager I would include it on my blog. They are very much in need of foreign tourists to come and stay there. I recommend anyone to stay here and use it as a base to tour the Wayanad district, home to exotic legends, ancient ruins, mysterious mountain caves, aborigine tribes, hidden treasures, jungle trails, and exotic wildlife. The hotel is I think just 7 years old and is very peaceful, relaxing and comfortable with modern facilities. Exceptionally helpful and friendly staff, nothing is too much trouble for them. The food in the restaurant was very good and we had a personal tour of the kitchens, spotless! Stay there its a crackin' place: ... read more

Just had an amazing week with Josey and The Ambassador. We left Fort Kochi for sun and relaxation on Cherai Beach for a couple of days, booked into a beachside hotel called Baywatch! Great surf, lots of sun and dips in the Arabian sea that was so warm.... needed a few days like this before we set off on our cultural tour of the Wayanad. We left Kalpetta the main town for this area and headed north into the heart of the Wayanad District. A secluded and much unvisited place I have always wanted to visit. The first challenge was to find the ruins of a Jain Temple at Panamanani, illustrated in the Wayanad Adventure Guide! Josey had not been in this area for 7 years, last time being with David Bailey, so he was a ... read more
