Note to the many, many readers: I'm back-dating the entries to coincide with the actual dates we arrived at our locations. So although I'm posting two weeks later, the dates will show when we were actually there. Otherwise, there is no delay, the entries are published as soon as they are completed. For the first Kerala entry, Jill is making a guest appearance: If Roy said it was hot in Goa, it was even hotter once we arrived in Kerala. But the hot sweaty days are not what stick out most in our minds looking back at the days spent in Fort Kochi, our first stop in Kerala. It is the people that we met. Everyone was so friendly and hospitable here that the agressiveness that we encountered up north was long forgotten. We arrived in ... read more

We arrived in Alleppy or Allephuza today - a two hour local bus ride from Kochi or Fort Cochin. Very hot - 35C during the day and down to 25 at night. Kerala is cleaner, greener and more friendly than any place we've visited so far. The general 'look' of this southern province on India's west coast is steep, red-tiled hip rooves over plastered walls under 60 foot-tall palm trees. This province has been a trading and sea-faring area for thousands of years. There are Mosques, Hindu shrines & temples and churches. The people speak malayalan which seems to have a whole lot of extra syllables thrown in just for fun. The mouth doesn't move much but the tongue rolls rapid-fire through the consonants. We find that everyone is very proud of their state and their ... read more

Two rows of drummers and three rows of pipers are building a tower of rhythm in front of the Bhagati temple in Nayarambalam. As the melam reaches a crescendo, men on top of the nine caparisoned elephants behind the pipers stand up, ritualistically fanning their alavattom and venchamaram. Pambadi Rajan, the King of Elephants that presides over the nine tuskers, stands majestically with four men and the deity on its top. Eight days and eight nights of festivities have left the elephants tired. Each of them has three men on top and two mahouts nearby. The animals stand motionless amid the crowd as tourists click away at the magnificent view. Wounds on their legs and hips constantly remind them of the harsh lessons given by their little trainers. As a session of the concerts gets over, ... read more

Co-ordinating pictures with Vernon's prose is proving to be a challenge. Part of the problem is that I left the cable connector for my digital camera in Canada and so far have not been able to replace it. Some cyber cafes can download my memory stick and burn a cd for me. In other instances I have been able to get this done in a camera shop. So, I have decided to pass on efforts to co-ordinate my photos with Vernon's prose, at least for the time being. What I have done is gone back to the material I have and have pulled out some photos that should give a flavour of our time here. If you click on the full image the pictures are enlarged. Southern India has been fasinating and quite different from the ... read more

The same rickshawman came and took us back to the Trivandrum railway station in the afternoon. He took us to the biggest temple in Trivandrum in whicw only Indian people can enter. There is a swimming pool just besides the temple. People after swimming and getting cleaned, can then go to pray. Our train was "Rajasti Train" which is the best one in India travelling between Delhi and Trivandrum in 48 hrs. Dinner and breakfast have been served on the train and meals were quite good. After 16 hrs. journey, we arrived at Madgoan at noon time on 27th Jan. In all trains 30 percent discount is applied to those over 60 years age.... read more

On Tuesday 24th. we woke up by the fluit whistles of the coloured birds. We tried internet at the cafe but faced with some problems while transferring the fhotos to the memory stick. We used a CD instead.Having breakfast we decided to spend the day at Varkala. In the afternoon we spent our time on the beach and at the gift stores. At the dinner we had tiger prawn and Tibetian Veg. Momo listening local Indian music. On Wednesday 25th. we took the train from Varkala to Trivandrum. It took 45 min. and 25 InR. each, and continued to Kovalam Beach by rickshaw, about 16 km. It is a fancy for us to be in the very south of India. We divide the beach in three. The light house portion in the very south, the middle portion just ... read more

Well, we have just arrived at the capital city of the state of Kerela, and I thought I would try to capture what we have been doing over the past two days. If I do not do so now, I will lose it and never get it back. On Monday morn, we went by car, Hindustan Motors, Ambassador Classic, 2006,and driver, from Kochi to Aleppo to do our own personal houseboat cruise in the backwaters of Kerela. The backwaters, best I can tell, are waterways that result from coast line contention, between the ever present Arabian Sea and the myriad rivers that attempt to flow into the sea, with not a lot of success, so that the waters back up into what is a fertile plain, beyond which stand the mountains that source the rivers. On ... read more

WEST SIDE! why are you so cool west coast of india? you too are way more laid back than the east! we had a beautiful train ride up to Kollam, which is the best city to start the upward journey through Kerala's backwaters. we wasted no time and jumped onto a ferry boat to explore the winding water ways and salt water canals. after only a few minutes we got to see enormous prawn net contraptions, amazingly colorful birds like Kingfishers (also the name of the best beer here!), and children splashing around in the water. here in india the polite way kids are taught to beg from travelers is to ask them for school pens (when really they want the hard cash, but look oh so cute and innocent this way). we got a kick ... read more

Last night Vernon sent you the first part of his description of our time in paradise, time that will go down in our personal history as an all time best. The images of our journey through the backwater are now be added and will now provide visuals of the peace, tranquility and beauty we experienced. The trip had us both spellbound. And now over to Vernon for the continuation of his description of the backwaters of Kerela. Penny THROUGH AND OUT OF THE BACKWATERS OF KERELA Our team of three devoted their every waking hour ensuring that we truly enjoyed what was unfolding around us. Meals were genuine Kerela fare. It is distinguished in its use of spices and herbs of the area for preparing sauces that accompany each dish. The sauces were so delightful, I ... read more

In this region of India people are sharp on not drinking alcohol. You may not drink in public places' only at the varanda of your hotel perhaps. we had our breakfast at "Chineese Dishes" in the town very near to the boat jetty and transferred to the boat to Kollam. It took 8 hrs. and we paid 300 inR /person excluding lunch and tea stop. that boat trip by itself a totally backwater one. You watch the Kerala way of living by the water side. The nature, people and their believes make this land " God's Own Country". After KollamWe shared a taxi with a couple to Varkala. The pictures may make you feel jealous, those friends who are strugling with minus degrees' we hope to worm them by our report. We are planning to go ... read more
