In February 2005, I spent a couple of weeks in Bangalore. This was my first trip and, although I was working, I did have two days in which I could do a little sightseeing. The first of these was spent investigating the Lalbagh Gardens in Bangalore and the second, some 30 miles north, in the Nandi Hills.... read more

I guess now is officially the start of my travels alone as I decided to travel to the destinations sooner than the Australian couple I had been with. My stop at the moment is a place called Mysore in the Karnataka. There are tourists here but not by the hoardes. The main draw here is the beautiful royal Majaraja's Palace. The royal family was in power from about the 1500s to the early 1900s. This area is known for its silk and incense industry so I had fun shopping. I remember that when I wrote about Peru (ages ago), I said that the world was your toilet. This seems to be true here as any wall seems to be fair game for urination(maybe thats why I always seem to smell pee wherever I go). On that ... read more

so I've finally made it to Hampi after spending 11 hours on a truly local bus. I was subjected to some local fruits and vegtables by a lady and her daughter after I agreed to switch seats with the girl so she could puke out the window. How to describe Hampi... this vast area once the empire of these princes in the 1400s. I guess its soon to be famous as its the backdrop for a Jackie Chan movie coming out in the next while? I'm travelling with a couple (she's australian, he's from India) who've graciously allowed me to tag along as their itinerary sounded good. I think the next stop is a city called Bangalore which isn't on the tourist circuit but home to some famous guru people flock to see (we're going for ... read more

I apologize that it has taken forever to get a blog together. Since all of the tsunami stuff, I haven't been particularly excited to sit in front of the computer...and I've really needed to take some time to let things soak in before I wrote. The devastation caused by the tsunami was (and is) so awfully overwhelming and tragic that it's a little sobering to think that of all the places I could have been at that moment--I was only a train ride away from, and en route, to a place that was hit (and it was only 2 months ago that I was on Koh Phi Phi with Matt). Sure, in some ways I feel blessed that I wasn't there, but in other ways it's hard to feel anything but grief for the thousands of ... read more

Bahubali's search for truth ended in Paudanapura, where he was frozen in meditation. Chamundaraya's search for the golden statue in the mythical land ended in Shravanabelagola, where he erected a gigantic staue in the likeness of his vision. Endless pilgrims start their spiritual journey from the footsteps of the gentle giant atop the Vindhyagiri. Ascent is a prayer here. Naked monks with peacock feathers overtake obese pilgrims on the hewn stone steps. Lean men with 'dolis' wait for passengers to carry up and down the hill. Priests with red turbans straight from history wait for devotees with wads of notes. The majestic monolith presides over all these. Two years later you will have to pay a fortune to reserve your place on the hill, when pots and pots of milk and water will flow over Bahubali's ... read more

Hanumaan-Gundi, Kudremukh, Lakya Dam & Malpe Beach. KudreMukh is the name given to a peak of a mountain for it shape like a horse-face (kudure=horse & mukha=face). Hanumaan-Gundi (Gundi=pit/hole) When we started from Infy All we have planned was to visit these places called Kudremukh & Hanumaan-Gundi. At the end of the day when we returned, the story was very much different and exciting. All in all we visited five places - HanumaanGundi waterfalls, Kudremukh Park, Lakya dam, Bahubali temple and Malpe beach + resort. We started at around 8 in the morning. After the round of mock fights for the window seats settled down, we started the breakfast round! If it would have been just idli-wada then I would rather avoid mentioning it here. But the hot halwa provided us the energy for singing, yelling ... read more

Vendors and porters were waiting for the morning bus from Shimoga. They climbed over it through the rear ladder and the window sills as they were just boarding it. Travellers wait for sacks of vegetables to be unloaded at the local market. Some do a quick shopping while others take a stroll. As the marketplace comes to life, the bus resumes its winding journey through the Ghats. Jog Falls is not in its spirits. Monsoon is already over and the hydro-electric project upstream has reined in its remaining power. Still, this 292-metre waterfalls, famed as Asia's highest, is simply irresistible. It lures you from the viewing platform to the lakes it had dug amid scaled rocks. But, the steep descend is demanding, even if you forget the climb back. Srikanth is pretty disappointed by the trickle. ... read more

I bought "52 weekend getaways from Blr".Veda recommended Kemmangundi as the difficulty level trekking was Novice. Myself, rams, Karthick and veda were the team . Veda always arranges our transportation/accomodation issues within KAR. We took a TATA Sumo and the plan was to leave blr by 8.30 pm on firday night. Nato sem sel cez eno vasico, kjer so bili ... read more
