You may never imagine what it takes when a few old pals regroup themselves for a wild weekend trip. sply when the destination to be is equally unknown with only a few pieces of information available. so, when we started for GOKARN, a 12 hours drive from bangalore, we were basically banking on hopes armed with kulti's multiple assurance and dham's 2 page print-out, which wud rather scare us as it told you what a spiritual site that place is! the hearts sank and so did kulti's chance of coming back as prodipto was determined to dedicate his roommate to the sea-god in case the place turns out to be a flop! bhnuri alias adhikari was given the role of the predator while kulti was the unanimous choice for the victim's! and our other organsier guha ... read more

Mist veils the woods and the road. At Sakleshpur, we are suddenly jerked out of alcohol-induced slumber; the Ghats start here. Unable to resume the party, we gaze at the whiteness outside the van. After abrupt turns and altitude change, we are no longer sleepy, but sick. Slowly, a reassuring green emerges out of the waning white. People have already started their chores. Women and girls return home with pots of water. Men have taken place at roadside bunds and tea shops. Marketplaces are coming alive. I search for the river Harish has promised. Kashi, our driver, pulled over the van ahead of a checkpoint. Bisle: the board put up by the forest department reads. A guard allows us in. Another one offers to be our guide. On either side of the road are two houses. ... read more

Happen to visit Bangalor for one day. Went shopping in Kemp fort shopping center whose exterior is a copy of the 'Excalibur' casino, in Lasvegas. At the back of the shopping mall there is this Shiva temple with its gigantic Shiva and Ganesha statues. Rather unsual scene comparing to other normal hindu temples. It will be the tower of the temple which will dominate the archetecture but here it is the Shiva statue which takes the prime attention. ... read more

Hello everyone. We are in Bangalore, the IT capital of India. We arrived here around 1 p.m. local time on an Indian Airlines flight from New Delhi. It was about a 2 1/2 hour flight, and those of you like us who are used to the cattle-call service on U.S. airlines, would be similarly impressed. We were served a full hot lunch which included a cold veggie sandwich on a pita, a cheese sandwich on white bread, a hot toasted cheese sandwich with jalapenos, two mini egg rolls, and a small vegetable kofta (kind of like a hot-dog shaped veggie burger thing), plus two gulab jamuns (golf-ball sized sweet breads soaked in brown sugary syrup - one of my favorite Indian desserts) and your choice of tea or coffee. After the meal, the flight attendants (wearing ... read more

We were heading north but did not want to go via Goa and Mumbai (former Bombay), so we had to find our way inland. A direct bus to Bijapur would have left one hour later, so we decide to go there by changing bus. The first part was perfectly ok, a local bus as usual, but in the meantime we had got used to this means of transport. Then we made the mistake (afterwards you always know better) to take an express bus. It looked good to us, with far more comfortable seats and more leg freedom. We took seats in one of the front rows, but were immediately ushered to the back because the other seats were reserved. We thought this a sham because this had never happened to us so far, until we found ... read more

We had some problems finding out how to get to our next destination, in Hampi they just tried to sell us a taxi ride at a high price. We took the local bus to Hospet, trying to catch a train at 9:00 am that we had read about somewhere. Still, the idea of a taxi and a chauffeur quite intrigued us, we had some time left, so Stephan went to look for the taxi stand, which is usually close to the bus stand. He actually found what we wanted, in the end it was 30% cheaper than the arrangements in Hampi, which is only 12 km away. We used an old white ambassador car, with seating benches for the driver and the passengers. Like in a movie of the 1950s! From Badami we would have had ... read more

Hullo There! We had three camera in our last trek; this album is from one of them. The other two albums I'll send in the coming weekEndz. pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/prashantjanis/album?.dir=/6c20 Have a look at some of the later snaps - with calf of an elephant and all that exciting stuff. Kamlesh with baby-ele (see the photo) Essentially our tour was devided in three logical parts: 1. Hard-core trek - Thadiyendamol - Highest peak in Coorg! 2. Visit to an elephant training camp called Dubare Forest & Resort. 3. Visit to 'Nijyang' (I'm not sure about the name) Monastery. 1. Trek was good but the climate was very hot. You can say "who asked you to go for a trek in middle of March!" But then that's how I'm - "Spirits high, flesh (might be) weak". We started at ... read more

Bean and I wanted to spend a few days relaxing at the beach before we came back to the cold winter in the US, so we decided to go to a little town on the northern coast of Karnataka that was rumored to have some spectacular beaches with little thatch huts to sleep in. We booked one of the most expensive buses that are available in India for the night journey, hoping that we could actually sleep. Even full size heavily cushioned beds weren't enough to keep the Indian roads from keeping us awake all night. We shared this bus with a bunch of westerners all heading to either Goa or Gokarna. The majority of them were hippies all trying to make it to the party scene in Goa. We were dropped of at the outskirts ... read more

The train from Bangalore took us to Hospet, the nearest railway station to Hampi. Although it offers more varied accommodation than Hampi, we decided to establish ourselves as close to the attractions as possible. Hampi is a mecca for backpackers, without the tourists the village would not even exist. There are no hotels in the strict sense, only a couple of private houses, which offer rooms on the upper floors. We chose the best one (everything is relative) with private shower since we were not in the mood for a shared bathroom. To all the foreigners who are fed up with Indian cuisine, Hampi appears like paradise, offering Italian pizza or pasta as well as American and Israeli dishes. You can find almost everything, apart from fast internet or shower gel. Hampi was once the seat ... read more

I hope that you are all well. I am in Bangalore, with the Henson family (friends from my home church in California that I visited during New Years) and plan to stay for nearly a month volunteering at a local school for children with (mostly physical) disabilities. I left the north about 4 weeks ago, visiting Shishu Bhavan (the orphanage where I volunteered in Kolkata) as well as my friends from villages in Maslandipur. When I visited Shishu Bhavan, one of the boys that, was to me, ‘the jewel of Kolkata’, was in the hospital due to respiratory problems. I ask myself WHAT was it that made me so attached to this little boy -- that has never said a word to me, probably doesn’t know my name, for that matter -- soo much that ... read more
