Our next destination was originally not planned, but was worth the detour. No, we are not running out of money yet and Stephan has not begun another IT job. We went there for the Mark Knopfler concert. We had been sad about missing his tour in Europe but were very lucky that we managed to see him there. Your authors as well as their camera took a western break, so we cannot offer you any pictures for this city. We went to the Palace Grounds early and purchased the tickets, the cheaper ones for Rs 1000 (about EUR 20), we could not afford the more expensive ones for Rs 2500. This is a price you would consider normal for Europe or the USA, but we found it extremely expensive for India. Still, quite many of these ... read more

The night bus rides always seem to be a blur between states of consciousness. It is impossible to fall completely asleep because every 15 minutes your body is launched completely in the air from hitting a big bump. Amazingly though, the Indians on the bus sleep like they were in a comfortable bed. The early morning sun revealed an amazing landscape as we approached the small town called Hampi. Boulder ridden hills surrounded us in every direction. It was as if an earthquake rattled the mountains apart ages ago. The small village sat by the river and reminded us a lot of Mamallapuram. We found a small guest house in the alleyways close to the river's edge. The town had a very laid back atmosphere and we could tell that tourism was the soul source for ... read more

We were a bit fed up with bus-rides, so we tried to catch a train from Mysore to Hassan. Although it was not mentioned in our guidebook, we found a train immediately. Unlike the buses, the train was almost empty. We enjoyed the trip very much, preferring trains to buses anyway, since you have more space and can move around rather freely. You also see a lot from the landscape from the train, you just don't experience village scenes in a bus. To our surprise we arrived one hour earlier than they had told us, and could finally book our second overnight train, which we had not managed in Mysore. There we had queued for about two hours twice, without any outcome. Although Mysore is a relatively big city, the train station is rather miserable. But ... read more

In the City Palace, we had met an Indian lady recently returned from the USA. She was an artist, writer and dancer, and gave us a vivid demonstration of classical Indian dance. The advanced dancers are able to translate any sentence into a dance movement, just what Deeptie did for us. Due to the interesting conversation with her, we were a bit late to catch a bus to our next destination, Somnathpur, a famous temple of the Hoysala style. As we absolutely wanted to see this monument, there was no other way than to become decadent westerners again and to hire an auto-rickshaw. When we had bargained a price that seemed reasonable to us - by the way, bargaining here is a must, from the jewellery shop to the fruit vendor, only then you are accepted ... read more

As we had had some problems with the bus connections, we arrived in Mysore too late to visit the famous City Palace. So we tried to catch a first glimpse of it through one of the gates. We liked the bit we could see and decided to move on to the Jagan Mohan Palace which we had already seen when the bus entered the city. Officially, it was also closed but when we came there, the doors were open and groups of people were standing outside, so we stepped in. That evening, a seminar about tourism took place and not long after our hesitating entry we were cordially greeted by one of the organisers, a professor of accounting at the university which was organising the seminar. We were asked to sit down and watch the cultural ... read more

The bus ride from Mysore to Bangalore was much better than our previous one. We got a deluxe bus (more comfortable) and traveled during the day. All of the villages and towns we passed through were packed full of people. I believe the Karnataka election results were being broadcast over loudspeakers on the main streets and everyone was out to hear the results. As soon as we got back to Padmanabh's house we were whisked off visit Mahesh's family. They were very kind and stuffed us full of home cooking. His father is a rice merchant and the rice pancakes we ate were made from the rice that he sells. Both his parents didn't speak English and Bean and I still haven't picked up any Kanada so Padmanabh translated for us. We had an enjoyable evening ... read more

We were dropped of in Mysore two nights ago just in time to catch the Mysore Palace illumination that happens every Sunday evening. It was very much like a fair or carnival. The surrounding gardens were packed full of people: locals, Indian tourists, and westerners. I am glad we decided to come see this city, the palace is definitely a must see. I can't imagine how much electricity is used to light all of the lights for one hour or how long it took to string all of them. Prashanth treated us to a delicious dinner at a nearby hotel and then they headed back to Bangalore to make it in time for work the next morning. Bean and I were quite exhausted due to the frantic pace that our Indian friends like to follow in ... read more

We've spent the past two days in one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. After leaving the farm in Palahalli we traveled several more hours by car to our current destination. We drove through a wildlife sanctuary where we saw wild peacocks, foxes, deer, and fowl. Prashanth drives extremely fast, like he is in race or something, he finally hit a bump hard enough that his front bumper fell off. We tied it back on with some string and continued on our way through blooming coffee estates. The smell of the coffee flowers filled the air. We arrived at the base of the Irpu Waterfall and Brahmagiri Trek route at about 8 in the morning to meet up with a group of 15 trekkers. Most of them were accountants or business men, ... read more

Yesterday we arrived in Bangalore after a very uncomfortable 8 hour bus ride from Pondicherry. Padmanabh and Prashanth, two of our Bangalore contacts, picked us up at the bus depot as soon as we got there. This was quite relieving, it is the first time we didn't have to figure what to do and where to go. We spent the rest of the day relaxing at his home and recovering from the sleepless night. Anitha, one of my friend Mahesh's good freinds, came by and greeted us both with a bouquet of flowers. Everyone was extremely nice and helpful. All five of us spent the evening exploring M.G. Road, the most modern street I have seen in India, and planning our trekking adventure. We woke up for an early start this morning and piled in the ... read more

The Cauvery Fishing Camp, overlooking the River Cauvery consists of just eight luxurious ethnic log-huts on stilts, blending beautifully with the jungle behind. On the riverbank are also nine well-furnished tented cottages (twin-bedded with attached bathrooms) for those who prefer a more closer-to-nature experience The fishing camp in only about a 2 hour drive from Bangalore, most of which is through an interesting landscape that reminded Paul of his time serving in the African continent. Also, very interesting are the Rock formations that look very inviting - Hopefully, next time I will get to combine a fishing holiday with an active rock climbing trip. We reached the camp in the evening. Soon after checking into our hut - we headed out into the river accompanied by an experienced coracle boatsman. Taking in the view of the ... read more
