Our last day in Hong Kong ended with the best view of the city yet. First, we attended a lecture on capital punishment. I learned quite a bit that I did not know. China is the country with the most reported cases of capital punishment in the world. The United States also made the top five. An opinion that the lecturer presented, supported by data, is that capital punishment is not a deterrent for committing crimes. The crime rate is higher in states within the U.S. with the death penalty. He also discussed ways of deterring people from committing crimes, other than capital punishment. The hosts from Hong Kong Institute of Education briefed us about our trips to Macau and Guangzhou, and then we went to the Peak. We took the Peak tram up to an ... read more

Well today started off just like every other day wake up late, rush to eat, complain about lecture being too long, and then going to lecture. But today was actually extra special because we all had to pack our stuff up that day because we were leaving for Macau and Guangzhou. The Taiwanese students wouldn’t be returning to Hong Kong University so they especially had to pack early. I was so happy though because right before we left for Victoria’s peak we saw Sunnie!! I was very happy about that. We couldn’t be talk for long because we had to leave for Victoria’s peak and pack our suitcases into storage. At first, after getting off the bus, we just walked around hong kong’s malls like always, then we went to eat in a restaurant that served ... read more

So the adventure continues as the weather gets hotter and more humid! This morning we had breakfast at the same little dim sum place round the corner, ordered the same food with the same lady................ and got something completely different! Still very tasty, different varieties of dim sum, just not quite as planned. Ah well! But first to yesterday - breakfast (as planned) was jowsers, steamed pork buns and soy milk for the mere sum of NZ$2. Yum. We then headed straight over to Kopwloon on the star ferry and wandered the avenue of the stars (HK's showbiz star-lined promenade, similar to Hollywood but without the familiarity of most of the artists) and Nathan Road, where we became seriously tempted to purchase a better camera............. We also wandered through Kowloon Park, some OK sculptures and a ... read more

Hello! We have made it to Hong Kong, and the first leg of our trip - a 21 day tour through China - is now officially at an end. We have travelled from Beijing to Hong Kong, via Shanghai, Xi'an, Chengdu, Emei Shan, Chongqing, Wuhan, Guilin and Yangshuo (see attached Map if it works!). We are in HOng Kong till the 4th of May, and we will try our best to fill in all the gaps of the last month or so since we left Europe on th 6th April. We have both time and the means to update our blog a bit more regularly now. The trip was a bit hectic at times, with all our free time taken up with additional sight seeing, washing clothes, meeting up with the group members etc. Also, we ... read more

Arrived Hong Kong yesterday the 22nd Typing this piece on the 28th floor of the hotel overlooking Kong Kong harbour. Attached is the Melbourne - Sydney leg of our trip. 12th March – Melbourne This is going to be a whistle stop ride from Melbourne to Sydney, arrived Melbourne quite early on in the day with view of heading through the Eastern suburbs of St Kilda and taking in some sights before meeting up with Lins friends, Dave & Diane Mullen. We seemed to bypass most of the city and ended up on East side of Melbourne on Port Philip bay, which is their watersports playground. Met up with Dave & Di at our motel, they drove us up through the Yarra valley (wine country) to a place called Marysville. It had been decimated by the ... read more

So the past two weeks my parents came out to visit in China which has been an interesting time. It’s been wild being somewhat responsible for their well being. Total role reversal. I flew down to Shenzhen and went to Macau for a day before meeting up with them in Hong Kong. I have the week off because my students are taking mandatory midterms that I’m not required to proctor. My job rules! Macau, or Au men (in mandarin and Cantonese), was named as a gateway which tributed the God Matsu, a God of the sea and fishermen. Matsu is a Chinese god who started getting worshiped around the time of the Ming dynasty 1450’s. This name was given before the 16th Century when the Portuguese picked it up as a port of their own. Macau ... read more

Day 6, Planned to take cable car to giant buddah on Lantau island but it wasn't running due to typhoon. Went to walled village in New Territories then took the cable winched tram to the peak (highest point) on the island, great views and a nice Bubba Gump restaurant there. Day 7; boxed up goodies I bought and posted back to the UK. Walked to the new Hong Kong exhibition centre, where they had a mega trade fair on. Managed to wangle a free entry pass and spent rest of the day there. Great harbour view setting and every consumer good you could ever imagine on show, you couldn't buy anything though unless you ordered 1,000s but I did get a free beer. ... read more
