Ni hao! After thoroughly enjoying ourselves in Hong Kong, we were perhaps a little apprehensive about moving on into China. It is, after all, a totally different country (NOT), and rumoured to be one of the most challenging places to backpack around due the fact that no one speaks any English. What is said about the border crossing is 100% accurate. Getting through customs from HK is easy-peasy (Chinesey?) but once on the other side the English signs stop and the pointing, grunting and smiling politely begins. Weird huh? Almost as weird as the fact that you have to go through a border crossing...surely its like going to Scotland? Thankfully the bloke who sold us our tickets to Yangshou wrote information on them in Manderin. All we had to do was show our tickets to someone ... read more

Well, I decided to wear a hat to class today. I'm not talking about a baseball cap or anything, I'm talking about the winter cap I wear outside all the time. Just having a normal bad hair day and don't want to take it off. Actually talking from a fashion perspective it doesn't really look that bad. I don't even know if I got any reaction at all from it in my first K8 class just now but then I had them get into pairs and do some work on "Why is your teacher wearing a hat?" and I got some crazy responses, ones that you wouldn't normally expect. "I think today is a special day in America." "Darby broke her head." "Darby broke her hair." (At which I stopped the class and asked them if ... read more

Hi, Mama and Papa Naxi guest house is probably the best guest house in the world. This is not an exagaration, I have stayed in quite a few in my life. Several people that I have met during my travelling in China recommended me about this guest house. Normally, when there is one common opinion, it is normally true. Everyone was telling me about the family atmosphere and that Mama treats you like a real Polish mother, you should eat and a lot, until you explode. I have imagained Mama Naxi as a big and fat woman at her sixties, wearing the traditional Naxi clothes. To my surprise, she appeared as a thin lady with a short-cut hair, wearing regular clothes. She is the dominant figure in the couple and very energetic. Papa stays in the ... read more

Contemplate the names of gardens such as: Garden of Harmany, Lingering Garden, Forest of the Lions Garden, Garden of the Humble Administrator, Garden of the Master of the Fishing-Nets, Pavilion of the Blue Waves, etc., add another 100 Gardens, and no doubt, you would find yourself in the city of Suzhou in Jiangsu Province, China, an hour from where I will be teaching. My trip to Suzhou was an excursion with my very dear friend, Arthur Lee, who would, daily, plan such memorable adventures. We spent one glorious day in this very intimate city, whose tradition of fine gardens has been praised in its status as " A World Heritage Site". It is said, "In heaven there is paradise, on earth there is Suzhou". The gardens are often hidden behind high walls and were created ... read more

Sat down to write this and realised its been two weeks since the last one.... seems time flies when you are buzzing around Asia. Since then we've gone to Saigon and explored a bit of Vietnam, flown up to Hong Kong and shopped till we dropped, then joined a tour group for China where we arrived last Tuesday. Im currently sat in a photcopy shop on their internet PC in downtown Dali, absolutely shattered after hardly sleeping at all last night, but I'll explain that later. Anyways, we last 'blogged' from Cambodia, and the day after took a 7 hour bus journey (3 hours longer than we'd thought) from Phnom Penh to Vietnam and Saigon. Should call it Ho Chi Minh city really, as the name changed after the communists took over, but I keep spelling ... read more

SOUTH AFRICA 3 ----------- austraila 2 Love it, love it. Let me see, Shanghai. 14 million people, big buildings and wide streets. It has it all, but to be honest it did not live up to its hype in my opinion. It still has a long way to go for it to be up there with New York, London, Milan, HK and the rest of them. It certainly is a fascinating combination of old and new with brand spanking new BMW's taking over dilapidated bicycles on the city streets. One of the coolest things is that at most bus stops they have TV's built into the timetable area where they usually are showing sport. I liked that. We stayed in the Captain Hostel, once again the LP map was off and we wondered around in utter ... read more

We are about to leave Beijing for the train station. This place is pretty wonderful. We saw the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Lama Temple, a Taoist Temple, Tianamen Square. We ate pizza for 25 cents, pork kidney and liver (surprising yet tasty) with beer and fixins' for $5, sushi for $15, and some delicious Peking Duck. We met people from Canada, Britain, India, and China. We only got duped into one "Art Exhibition" and we can now count to 9,999 in Chinese. We also know the symbol for beef and we are working on mastering the phrases, "No thank you, I don't want to buy anything," and, "Can I have the check please?" Things are going well. We are now off to Xi'an en route to Shanghai through Zhengzou. This short little summary doesn't ... read more

Between dancing with lady boys and a run in with the Red Guards, I’d say Scott had the full China experience. There’s nothing quite like being accosted whether it be out of fear or love. We found the lady boys at a Thai restaurant called Banana Leaf. I had the day off, Scott had returned from Beijing and having finished our 90-minute oil massages, Scott and I walked over to the flagship branch of this growing chain. It being Women’s Day, the place was packed. We faced a 20-minute wait for a table, but five minutes into it, I saw the manager, one of my occasional students. He ushered us to a better location where we watched the nightly entertainment, ten young men and women dancing and singing into wooden spoon microphones. A lot of ... read more

SOUTH AFRICA 3 ----- Australia 2 SO SO SO Sweet. Well on to far less important things, life and travel. That terrible train ride was well worth it in the end due to the fact that Qufu is such a gem of a town. Stayed on the corner of this very busy street right next to a food market. It was great. The sounds and smells were brilliant. Ate there every day. Spent the first day running around this ancient town, it is beautifully enclosed with old city walls and bell towers to match. Out of any place we have been this was the place where no one was western and no one could speak English. It was not too bad because people were really friendly and the town was small. The next day we jumped ... read more
