Life begins when…wait…YOU MEAN THERE IS AN END! As most are aware there are milestones in ones life… Your first words, your first bicycle, your first day in school, first kiss, first job…I could go on adinfinitum about the significant points of my life, but I won’t bore you with that. Well I will bore you with one point…holy SHIT, I am turning 40! First off, I never thought I would make past 21, well 25 at the most. I review and analyze, change and delete, add and subtract it all, but it still comes up to being forty. I watch as the world around me is swallowed in its own mirth and smiles as I feel like I am sometimes sitting on the sidelines waiting for the coach to say “Ok Johnston, get you ass ... read more

... read more

A few years ago I traveled to Borneo to visit an Orangutan Sanctuary, set a few miles into the rain forest. A pleasant place where they use their limited resources to rehabilitate captured Orangutans, mostly young orphans, thanks to poachers, back into the wild. I was lucky enough, at the time, to have a close and personal encounter with a nursing female Orangutan and her baby, on a path in the jungle. This image fogged my judgment as I signed for a trip to "The Giant Panda Breeding Research Ctr." of Chengdu, in Southern China. THE GIANT PANDA INCIDENT The first impression I had, coming off the bus from central Chengdu, was of Sea World. The second was the San Diego zoo. A few minutes later, together with my group of some 26 other eager tourists, ... read more

I’ve been asked for some advice on traveling in China by a couple of different people and while I’m no expert, I’ll write about some of the things I’ve learned. Trains: Trains tend to be the least expensive way to travel in China, which accounts for many of them being booked solid, especially in summer. However, you can book trains several days (up to 5 I think) in advance by going to the station and getting your ticket. The best way to see what trains are available is to go to http://www.travelchinaguide.com/china-trains/index.htm where you can enter your location and destination and you’ll get a list of possibilities. Now, it is always easier to get a ticket for a train that originates from your present location and you may find it difficult to get tickets for any ... read more

If the 12 hour train ride was not really fun, the 17 hour trip to Shanghai was even less fun. We finally rolled in there at 11:30 am on Friday and the next chore was finding a cab that would take us to the hostel that we didn't have reservations for but would hopefully have space. Luckily, we developed a newfound appreciation for traffic assistants when one saw our unsuccessful plight of pointing to the place on the map in the Lonely Planet and about six cab drivers just saying no for no apparent reason. (They didn't want to drive that far away? They didn't like the looks of two foreign girls? Who knows) This guy looked at our map, flagged a cab down, and from our best guess told the driver that he had to ... read more

So yesterday we went to the panda reserve after I last blogged. It was very neat, and very different than any zoos in the US. First we saw a bunch of red pandas, who were very curious and cute! The don't have glass separating you from the animals, just a hedge and than a trench between you and the animal. We got to get very close, maybe 10 or 15 feet from all the animals. The zoom button on my camera is broken (fortunately I can still take pictures) so the photos don't do justice how close I was, but it was very neat. Then we saw a 6 month old giant panda. One of the people that work there had put him up in a tree and he wasn't a very good tree climber yet, ... read more

OK well I think if you want to see all the amazing photos from our travels - and there are so many that will take your breath away - you'll have to visit us for a photo session. As they take too long to upload & I'd prefer to keep you up to date with what's been happenning since. What we do promise to do is put our favourite photos into a hard copy photo album. So you'll be abe to browse them then. In the meantime, as a final offering of China, here is a tribute to the amazing faces & costumes (their everyday clothes) we saw. You'll see why we felt like we were on the wild frontier - and why it's important to visit tehse places before they become spoilt. Claire... read more
