So yesterday of course was the Ides of March. The fateful day in 44 BC where Julius Caesar met his untimely death. Some 2000 years later, yours truly entered the world. Well, this year my birthday would be spent in Beijing. This was extremely weird for those back home sending me birthday wishes because, given the time difference, they would have to do so the day before. Many seemed confused why they were wishing me a happy birthday on March 14th. From my perspective it was "Brett-fest '06" in that when I talked to some of my family the next day....it was still my birthday. Two full days of birthday....crazy! However, when I mentioned my birthday to Chinese people...they usually had the same reaction....March 15th is an important day in China. "Oh yeah," I would reply, ... read more

I had the most incredible day today (and its still going on!). It started at 6:30 am, when I woke up because I had to meet at Zhongshan Park (the park right down the street from our apartments) at 7am to do a project for my Communicative Chinese class. I learned that I've been missing SO MUCH by not waking up early every day while I'm in China. By 7am, the park was PACKED with "old people" (laoren) who do their exercises early every morning. According to the principle of yin and yang and the laws of fengshui, the early morning is the best time to exercise. At that time it is believed that the weaker spiritual energy, the yin, of the night is turning into the stronger spiritual energy, the yang, of the morning, and ... read more

We have now begun our fourth week here and the routine remains “dynamic”. We have a teaching schedule, which has me in class on Monday and Tuesday and Ellen in class on Monday and Friday. We each have some additional responsibilities that require a fair amount of additional time during the week. For Ellen, it is supervising the students who are working on the Chinese Working Women’s Network (CWWN) bus, which each Saturday parks in an industrial area about an hour from here. She has some social work students, for whom this is a field placement and some staff and volunteers for the CWWN. This is important work, one that nourishes the tendrils of an independent labor movement here in the PRC with Ellen’s considerable experience and acumen. She has also been going with the bus ... read more

Well, I have managed to arrive in China! I sadly left Koh Chang and headed to Bangkok on Tuesday. Tuesday night had a good dinner and a 1 1/2 hour Thai massage at Madame Joe's just behind Khao San Road, it was wonderful! Got up early Wednesday morning to get the airport bus. Flew to Kunming, where I bought a ticket to fly to Chengdu immediately. I hadn't been able to figure out how to use the phones, so I wasn't able to get in touch with the two people I knew in Chengdu. Fortunately I sat next to a very nice man who not only called my friends for me, he shared a taxi with me and took me to the hospital where my friend Ying works - Ying worked in my lab for a ... read more

Well, we are about to leave Xi'an for Shanghai. We've been here since the lovely 12 hour train ride from Beijing. We bought a "hard sleeper" and they weren't kidding. We got a bit of sleep with our ear plugs, eye covers and bellies full of tylenol pm but it wasn't enough. I've never had an issue with sleeping after popping some tylenol pm but it was a pretty bumpy ride. After we arrived we were bombarded with, "Hello. Do you have a place to stay? (yes) Oh, where? (at a hostel) Do you know how to get there? Because I'm tour guide and I can take you there for cheap. (we know how to get there but thanks) But I can take you there. (we are already meeting a tour guide) Oh. long pause as ... read more

It is a twilight time now. A time of soft light from the sky between sunset and the full darkness, a time of long shadows that follow you to where ever you are going, it is a time of vagueness - of being in between, a time for a mood to be setting in, a period of decline - of stretching a tired body and a searching soul, a time of travels and of dreams, a time when East meets West. It is a time for us. A weekly date between you and me… just us, alone and together. My name is Dan. My very best and close friends call me Dindan. I come to you from far away land, from other culture and traditions. I am a writer, a journalist. I have written books and ... read more

On a warm August afternoon, at the end of summer 2002, I landed at Harbin’s airport. From the window on the Air China plane, the city looked gray, dusty, and somewhat tired after trying to survive the heat of the fading summer. I did not mind it. I was exited to be here again and looked forward to a pleasant and enjoyable time in this northern city, capital of Heilongjiang Province, China. I think that it was then that I found you again, my darling China, my dear Harbin. This story started, so I think, when I was a little boy - one that was blessed with high degree of imagination and curiosity. In a courtyard, adjacent to my parent’s house, I used to spend my childhood days playing inside a large cardboard box, transforming it ... read more

Ok, so let's discuss overnight trains in China. There are three options: cattle car (don't remember the proper name for it but basically there are tables to sit at but no beds), hard sleeper (bunks 3 deep on both sides of the car with no compartments), or soft sleeper (compartments with 4 bunks each). I was highly advised to pay the difference and go the soft sleeper route so that is what I did. However, after talking to travelers who had taken hard sleeper, I am not entirely convinced that the extra money I paid was worth it. First of all, the doors and walls of the compartments are so thin that you can hear everything that's going on outside or next door anyway, thus defeating the purpose of even having a compartment. Second, the compartment ... read more

Getting off the plane from Shanghai to Xiamen we were fully clad in our winter attire only to be whacked by a torrent of warm air when exiting the airport. OH OH the sun. So nice. It is amazing how one takes sunlight for granted. Having bounced from hemisphere to hemisphere for the last 8 months I have only had summer. So China came as quite a shock to me as well as Ryan. But darling Xiamen was a temperate 23 with blue blue sky. Caught the hour long bus for 1 RMB to Gulang Yu island. Caught the free ferry to the island. Walked into a beautiful youth hostel with high ceilings and sit down toilets. It really is the nicest hostel I have stayed in so far. Very airy and light with terracotta tiles ... read more

I didn't really do too much today looking back on it. This morning I got up and met Cat at the gym to work out for a little bit. I made an appointment to get a strength test on Friday morning (see how much the gym has improved me - if at all). Then I went to the gym and neither Kast nor Camillo were there. Bensony (or Jimmy) ended up doing my hair and messing with me for a bit of time. He's really cool (as are all of my L Salon boys). Then I went home to meet Cat for lunch. She made some macaroni and cheese (the real Kraft kind - her parents sent it to her) and she added beans and carrots to it. I made a salad which I added sausage ... read more
