The abilities of the children vary wildly within classes, let alone between classes and grades. Some of the first grade students have better English than some sixth graders could ever hope to achieve. I had a particularly enthralling English conversation class with quite a weak fourth grade class, who all successfully leaped the hurdle of asking my name and age - several times, to check I wasn’t falsifying information. Then they seemed a bit stuck, so I asked them their favourite animals and colours for about three hours, then they reverted to the text book. Their current lesson is ‘what do you want?’, which was asked several times. Then one kid got adventurous, and asked me ‘what does the goat want?’ Luckily, I had flicked through the lesson about 5 seconds before the class started (and ... read more

"He who has not climbed the Great wall is not a true man" - Mao Zedong Couldn't agree with you more old boy. Everywhere you go here in Beijing people try to sell you a package tour,"Transportation and lunch included" type deal to see the Great Wall. So my boy Ryan and I said to hell with that and decided to Do It Ourselves. Woke up at 7am. Caught the underground to the bus station. Some guy there tried to sell us a tour, we told him where to go. Lucked out and jumped on some taxi thing that was just leaving. Ended up being a bit of a nightmare with them packing in 28 people into 19 seats. (Just like home on the N2) These two guys got into a fight, the one guy ended ... read more

Ellen and I are settled in a bit; we are beginning our second week of classes and something resembling a rhythm is getting established. There were certainly some bumps along the way, as administration here is very desperate to get a social work program going and are willing to do whatever is necessary to get classes filled and teachers in front of those classes. I have given up my undergraduate class and Ellen has agreed to take it over. She is now doing two undergraduate classes and one graduate, supervising five graduate students who are involved in the Worker’s Bus Project, and spending time with the staff and students from that project, both on site and in seminars. No surprise that she is fully engaged. I am teaching a graduate course (a hybrid Public health approach, ... read more

Let me precede this by saying when one is drunk all of their inner feelings are spilled out on the table in a crazy mess just like pick-up sticks. This is exactly what happened to me on Monday night. It all started out with a really great party at Las Tapas - a great Spanish restaurant. (This hurts to write about so it may take me a little bit.) It was Laura's birthday and everyone was there with bells and whistles on. I was sitting at an end table with Natalia, Adam, Kelvin, Cat and a new woman named Sandy who is from Tennessee. Adam and I were having a nice friendly eating contest to try and eat everything on the table and in the midst of it I realized that I really liked the wine ... read more

A very incomplete list: NEW LOVES: 1. ~Street Food~ My favorite part of the day now just may be lunchtime, when we take the bus to East China Normal University campus in enough time to partake in the wonders of cheap, cheap, cheap & greasy Chinese food that's sold on the street. I'll have to admit that my first day I was a little timid and stuck with what I know, chao mian (stir-fried noodles) for 3 kuai (If 8 kuai is a dollar, that's less than 50 cents). Yesterday I went with the recommendations & had a Chinese-version of a burrito?, which was basically a crepe with egg and some greens and something brown that is supposedly bean curd sauce, for 2 kuai. It was incredible! Today I had a most interesting lunch of a ... read more

Since this class is about industry and spring break is coming up, I thought this would be fun. If anyone happens to go to a place where you can only purchase things through bargaining, then this blog is going to useful. I recall the time I was in China which was in 2001. Prices of everything was significantly low compared to the prices that we pay here in America, it makes me wonder after all the import/export taxes that we pay here along with government sales taxes, how much are stores really profiting from us? Meanwhile if they purchased many products from China at really low prices, they could profit by over 100%. I'm trying to remember my bargaining skills since I was last there in 2001...... I've been in Shanghai for nearly 24 hours and I was correct in assuming that it would be a good place to start my second trip to China. Generally, getting around is easy and I haven't had to much problem find inexpensive and filling food. I arrived yesterday afternoon (March 1st) about 3 in the afternoon, got myself through customs, found someone to ask directions for the Maglev train and caught it to Shanghai. Now, this Maglev is pretty cool...we were travelling at 430 kph at it's fastest and it got me near Shanghai in just a few minutes. It was expensive by China standards, but it was worth the price. I then transfered to the metro carrying my huge backpack and then, carefully following the directions, I made my way to the Hiker Youth Hostel. ... read more

We went to see Ljilijana, Stevan's mom in China. She has been living in Beijing for the past few years. It was great to spend some time with her and see Yunnan province, which we did not visit during our first visit in May 2002. Our first visit was much easier than our second, mainly because we had Chinese-speaking friends in Hong Kong and Beijing who really helped us get around. Ljiljiana has picked us quite a bit of Chinese, but we still had problems communicating. Many Thais and Cambodians speak a bit of English, so it was easy to communicate in those countries. This is not the case in China, where even our efforts at hand gestures were ineffective, though they did seem to understand when I pantomimed a chicken and an airplane. We traveled ... read more

Chairman Mao, Chairman Mao, yaaaaaaaaayaaaaaaaaaaaayaaaaaaaaaaaa. Arrived in Beijing this morning at 6am. Yip it was snowing. So it is literally freezing here. A cool negative 3 celcius. Ryan and I deliberated for a good three days on where to head next after Yangshou we went to Guilin for the day which was quite pleasant. Met this stalker lady who was nice and showed us around, crashed in on some art classes, people laughed. And then we decided to go to Nanchang. Gees, we got off at the train station not anyone could mutter a word resembling English. My mastery of the Chinese language was far better than anyones english. We wondered around looking for a hotel. SO cold. Ended up saying screw it and caught a bus to what we thought was the small town of ... read more
