Dongqian Lake is one of the main tourist spots in Ningbo, so we hopped in a taxi and headed there. Since the lake is massive and we didn't know which part we wanted to be at a quick phone call to someone gave us a location to show the taxi driver. The journey took about twenty minutes. The taxi dropped us at the start of a smaller road and we walked down it. There we found a ticket booth and paid the entrance fee to Tao Gong Island. I can't remember how much it was now. The God of Wealth, Fan Li, and Venus, Xi Shi, lived on Tao Gong Island several thousand years ago, or so the story goes. We consulted the map and it seemed that there were a few things to do on ... read more

A quick trip to the Ningbo Museum. We tried to walk there as it didn't look too far away on the map, that was a mistake. We got horribly lost wandering around parts of Ningbo that are being developed. I thought Korea would never get finished the amount of construction work going on there, not a patch on China. Also, where are all the people? This part of Ningbo feels like a ghost town at times. After finding a Korean restaurant and having some bibimbap there, we flagged down a cab and drove to the museum. Much easier! NIngbo museum opened in 2008 and was designed by Wang Shu, a famous Chinese architect. The museum looks very impressive from the outside, really different to the other buildings in the area. The idea behind the design is ... read more

My first exploration into my new city. Tiangong Farmstead was about a half hour's drive from where I live. I think it would have been quicker if the bus driver hadn't got lost and took us to another farmstead first. The first place we visited was a square surrounded by workshops. The buildings are all in the traditional Chinese style, they looked so pretty. We wandered through the various workshops, looking at what the artisans had produced. There were lots of gorgeous carvings and lanterns among other things. This place must run art classes as in front of the workshop/shops were lots of kid sitting on little stools sketching and painting. It was an adorable sight to see. After wandering the shops, we decided to head out and see more of the farmstead. While there had ... read more

Geo: 29.88, 121.55Today the alarm was set for 5.45am as we had a flight to catch to Taipei. No breakfast today, no time so we got packed, then got a taxi to the airport. Well this taxi driver thought he was in a racing car, we darted between cars, buses, we dragged with another taxi driver for most of the way, I was in the back seat and the front wheels of the car next to us was level when we were changing lanes, this was quite common right the whole way to the Airport in Ningbo. Then Clint said was this the right airport ??? How was I to know?? Well were at the right one, there is only one airport. Paid our fare 50 RMB ( about $10) cheap for a ride in a ... read more

this is the record of my first bolg on "travel blog", to start with I am gonna share my trip to Shaoxing, a town very close to Ningbo. it's famous for its unique riverside view (ancient Chinese riverside houses, boats as popular transportation tool) and its yellow wine (home made with very high alcohol content). I believe my discription may reminders you of venezia, but i would say, the boats in Shaoxing is relatively small and plain, with black covers. I am gonna be there for a overnight trip on Mid-autum festival, and i will share more when I am back from there. I have been to ShaoXing once when i was in jounor high, organized by school, the memory is not that clear since all i can remember is the crowd. I remember ... read more

So much like the trip to Suzhou, Ningbo was on my list of places to go see. Of course I didn’t realize I’d have to pack in so many places in such a short time but still an adventure is an adventure. And it just so happened that when I was covering for people at Wulin I had the same weekend days off as Rebecca so we went off on another adventure together before I left. We had decided that we’d catch a super early train (it’s the weekend no one gets up before 11am on their days off, let alone my working days haha) and therefore caught the 8am train to Ningbo from Hangzhou East station. My public transport was super slow and the Hangzhou East station is a bit further away than the usual ... read more

Geo: 29.8693, 121.557Today we were up at 6am after going to bed at 2am !! Oh well....you only live once!!!So an early breakfast the we walked about 6 blocks to a market area but we were too early so we wandered until some shops opened, again we were taken by a man down some alley ways for bargain shopping, not like Shanghai where there were lots of these sellers, but he only took us to 1 shop and it was mainly men's stuff, small shop too. We went back to the markets and with limited time, we split up and wandered separately. I found some clothes for the girls, hopefully they will like what I bought. Back to the hotel to do our final packing, we then waited to be picked up by Cookie and Mr ... read more

The end of my first week brought the annual team-building event. Chinese style. You don't want to spend Saturday sitting on a bus with your colleagues? Lose a day's holiday. This would not work back home: the unions would not allow it. But of course with the fun office tribe it could be nothing less than a fun trip... Only slightly deprived of sleep, I made it to the office for the unreasonably early start time. I realized I had no clue where we were going or what we were going to do, only that I was involuntarily immersed in Chinese mass tourism. Not much choice now. On the coach, we were encouraged to join in some games, which were half geared towards exercises against DVT (how far were we going to drive?) and half at ... read more

I have finally arrived in Ningbo (after a mission of a journey)! It is so strange to finally be here! I am all settled in my new apartment, which is very cosy. I have spent the day cleaning and killing some seriously hideous looking insects and setting up possibly THE most retarded internet connection ever! It took me about 4 hours to follow some useless chinese instructions (looking every other character up in the dictionary) and once I had finally connected I discovered that it takes almost 5 mins to load 1 page. God knows what skype will be like! Anyways, at least I have some sort of access to internet! Apartment is nice and is loacted within the main campus grounds of the uni. The university is massive though! It is like a self-contained city ... read more

After passing our 1 1/2 month marker of our time here in Shanghai, Ollie and I were really looking forward to getting out of Shanghai to experience a different part of China. We've definitely settled into life here now - we're comfortable with our surroundings and with our routines. We have our favourite restaurants, favourite things to do, and also have our least favourite things about life here too. Happily Ollie has 2 friends living in China right now with whom he'd spent his elementary and high school years with. Eva, originally from Hong Kong, currently lives here in Shanghai and Alex moved from Toronto to Ningbo 4 years ago, a city 3 hours drive south of Shanghai in China's Zhejiang Province. As they're a couple too we planned a couple's holiday in Ningbo to stay ... read more
