'Super Glorious Family Lovely Meal' is my new find on the ever elusive search for eating spots that I can: 1) order without embarrassment, 2) pretty much know what I am getting, 3) and not pay much more than $5, usually less, including a frosty beverage. At least I think it was called 'Super Glorious Family Lovely Meal', but I could be wrong...in any event it fulfilled my basic criteria and was tasty into the bargain. The atmosphere and production was a tad school canteen, but efficient and certainly the ladies (mostly) do a great job of providing decent fresh food at reasonable prices. However, as is often the case in China, the background 'music' was incredibly loud--according to the Decibel Meter app on my iPhone (Yes--I have a sound level meter on my phone--don't you?) ... read more

China-continued… Day two (Thursday) is a long one—three classes starting at 8:00 and finishing at 3:20 with a 2-hour break in the middle of the day. Still very hot and humid and even the locals are commenting on the humidity in particular. I am in the break period in the foreigner’s office, which fortunately is air-conditioned, although it still feels very ‘moist’. Apparently, it will continue like this for another couple of weeks…. Yesterday was “interesting’ as I had more or less run out of cash and I had been trying various ATMs around the city to no avail: I used the ones from last time, which worked fine two years ago but for whatever reason, no luck, no cash. I thought I would try Western Union transfer to China, but no luck there either—at this ... read more

HOT! DAMN HOT!! In my best Robin Williams 'Good Morning Vietnam' voice...that's how I'm responding to anyone who asks me "How are you, Mr. Jefferies?" Not really, of course, that would be rude...however it IS damn hot: today, my first day back in the classroom, is 31-C 'feels like 45-C'; you may as well say '31-C, but feels like the surface of the sun'. Oh, and it's still and overcast...once in a while there will be a tantalising whisper of a breeze, but it's just an illusion to lull you into a sense of false 'non-sweating-ness' . Hopefully it will thunder tonight and provide a cooling downpour, but it doesn't take long to get back up to the 'tropical moist heat' temperature setting. One of the best luggage inclusions I brought with me were two handkerchiefs ... read more

China! The mysterious Orient...actually mysterious is not really the right word--perhaps 'exciting, puzzling, frenetic, frustrating rewarding...' might start to describe a fascinating country and equally fascinating culture and people. I am in Jinhua for a four-month teaching gig at Jinhua Polytechnic University as part of an exchange program with Royal Roads University, Victoria, BC, Canada. The intent of the program is to deliver RRU's Hospitality program to Chinese student at JPU. The program is taught in English and the Canadian teachers work with Chinese translator's in the classroom to help facilitate the course. I teach Marketing and Sales: this is my second placement and I have just arrived and anticipate getting going in the classroom in a few days. I arrived in Shanghai from Vancouver where I stayed to 'acclimatize' and de-compress before heading to Jinhua--this ... read more

Sorry this one isnt quite finished yet. At the mention of Jinhua, the first thing that comes to a Chinese person's mind is perhaps Jinhua ham, a local specialty. Few people, however, know that it is also the hometown of Immortal Huang, a man who practiced Taoism here and become a local god. It borders the provincial capital of Hangzhou to the northwest, Quzhou to the southwest, Lishui to the south, Taizhou to the east, and Shaoxing to the northeast. Its population was 5,361,600 at the 2010 census including 1,077,300 in the built-up area. One can notice that the cities of Dongyang/url... read more

It took me two months to finally work up the courage to ask why one person always filmed and photographed every minute of my teaching with Kingways. For the blog, of course! With patience, or a knowledge of Chinese, it is possible to see a Chinese Eye View of my teaching... demonstration lessons with up to 150 students from grade three to ten, and up to a dozen highly skilled and experienced English teachers watching on. Choices of photographs and segments of the lessons are not always what appeal to me, so I ponder what it is that made that image or song worthy to a Chinese audience. The parents are the target audience, with about 100 hits after each posting that contains photos and videos of the children enjoying their english lessons. When I found ... read more

Accepting invitations in China is the first step on unknowable adventures. Any expectations should be left on the kitchen table, before you walk out the door. "Breakfast at my grandmothers house" started at 7am and ended at 4pm. The day included lunch, a temple visit, and a two hour hike to a mountain village peopled with ancient grandparents. "The landlady has asked you out to lunch" included going to her home town to meet 92 year old grandmother, a visit to the local senior citizens centre and a walk around the reserviour. "Help my father look at some trees" turned out to be a visit to my colleagues hometown. We walked the streets and reminisced about the village of her childhood, and had lunch with relatives at the restaurant of her sons' 24 years ago babysitter. ... read more

Jinhua Number Two Senior High School ABC The Administration Building is five stories of offices and meeting rooms, plus a 400-seat lecture room. It is the only building with a lift. The Principal and the Party Secretary both have huge offices, side by side on the third floor. The print room with 2 full time staff is located on the first (ground) floor. Basketball, badminton and tennis courts including a full sized indoor basketball stadium are part of the school facilities. There is a table tennis hall with about 20 tables. Students have two single sex sports lessons per week. Cleaning is done by the students. Each class has a weekly roster for cleaning their own rooms. Cleaners collect rubbish and clean the stairwells, the toilets and around the yard. I must clean my own office ... read more

Learning new skills is part of life. I remember where and when I learnt to fillet and serve mangos many years ago, and mastering this has served me well. My latest skill aquisition came about because I was begifted not one, but three red fleshed pomelos in quick succession. They are the most delicious, sweet tasting citrus. Perfect for autumn snacks. Previously, the fruit seller had skinned them, and Chinese friends segmented and peeled them. Finally, I had to tackle my own pomelo, so with knife (and camera) in hand, let me share this art.... read more
