one block per grade Jinhua Number Two Senior High School ABC
The
Administration Building is five stories of offices and meeting rooms, plus a 400-seat lecture room. It is the only building with a lift. The Principal and the Party Secretary both have huge offices, side by side on the third floor. The print room with 2 full time staff is located on the first (ground) floor.
Basketball, badminton and tennis courts including a full sized indoor basketball stadium are part of the school facilities. There is a table tennis hall with about 20 tables. Students have two single sex sports lessons per week.
Cleaning is done by the students. Each class has a weekly roster for cleaning their own rooms. Cleaners collect rubbish and clean the stairwells, the toilets and around the yard. I must clean my own office with broom and dustpan provided.
Dormitories are with six beds to a room, sharing with classmates as allocated. Each student has a top bunk with bedding that goes home on weekends, and is often aired during the week. Each student has own desk, wardrobe and bookshelf.
English is compulsory from Grade 3 Primary School through to completion of Senior High

all is peaceful, so the guard can read the daily news School. Students from small rural schools are noted for having far less English instruction than city schools.
Food is provided by a four storey cafeteria, feeds 4000 people (students, staff and local police) 3 meals a day in less than 50 minutes a sitting.
Uniformed
Guards are stationed at the north and south gates of the school. There is a team of 3 for each gate and from 6am to 11pm there is always at least one on duty. School cards are used at the gates to scan students in and out. Post is delivered to the office at the Main (South) gate, where students and staff must go to collect all items. There is a moveable barrier that is opened for cars to enter, but bikes and scooters go through the walking entry.
Home groups spend 24/7 together. They share dormitories with 5 of their classmates and do all lessons together.
Fox is the
icon for the software that marks the multiple-choice exams. Students answer on small cards that are run through a machine attached to a computer, then the data is collated and an excel table is generated in moments. All data is stored
in the school network, and any teacher can access the scores for all students. Associated software sends students scores in a text message direct to the family phone.
Jinhua Number 2 is a selective school. The school is ranked second academically in the province.

Lights Out and silence is at 9:45 pm in winter, and 10:10 in the summer.
Morning routine starts t 6:00 am with wakeup, then Morning exercises, whole school participates at 6.20 every morning (not on rainy days). Morning Reading alternates between English and Chinese for 35 minutes.
The
number of students in the school is 3,600: one-third per grade. 50 students per class in grade two and three (11 & 12) and 40 per class in first grade as part of the new educational reform. There are 300 teaching staff, and countless support staff including administration, gardeners, kitchen and security staff.
Overtime? Teachers have 10 to 12 classes, spread from 7.45am to 9pm Monday to Saturday, plus one evening per week supervising 2 lessons of Homework. Home room teachers also have 3 mornings supervising fitness and reading, plus 3 evenings checking on lights out. One week per semester
canteen
choose your own every teacher does conduct duty, and wears a tag to indicate this. Junior teachers are allocated extra classes, to cover for colleagues on maternity leave.
There is a platform at the front of the classroom. Computer is built into the platform, with data projector and roll down screen in each classroom. This is supplemented by a huge blackboard with boxes of coloured chalk.
Q
This is the second
ranked school in the city; students must achieve high results in the Provincial exams to gain a place here. There is a private school on campus for students whose parents can pay, because they did not achieve the required mark. The class from Qin Hao is part of a National program.
Student teachers do a three-month placement, and do all the marking and other routine tasks. They must teach and video about four lessons, to be submitted for assessment.
Textbooks for English come in three parts for the year, with each section having two parts a textbook and a workbook. Supplementary exercises are published in a mini newspaper for students, plus unrelated "reading for interest" papers are required. Students must purchase their own texts at the beginning
In the Girls dormitory
6 to a room, all from the same class. of the year, and store all books in their desks and plastic containers under their chairs.
Uniforms are not worn. The students have army fatigues for their two weeks army training in first grade. There is a uniform for special occasions, but no such occasion has occurred yet.
Virus or vomitting: colleagues must cover classes of anyone absent for any reason. Teachers are entitled to apply to be absent from school for illness, death in the family etc, but pay is docked, as there is no provision for paid leave. Teachers are entitled to public holidays off only and take some time (unknown) during the 2 months summer vacation.
An old
Water Tower is tucked away in the oldest part of the school grounds, where there are beautiful mature trees amoung traditional Chinese buildings. The newest part of the grounds is 5 story modern orange brick faced buildings centered around a huge Parade Ground (called Sunshine Plaza). The landscaping includes a significant sized lake and two small mountains topped with pavilions.
EXams rule the curriculum. Mid term, end of semester, monthly practice exams in all subjects across the school take up a huge amount of the teaching time. Results are texted to parents, and posted in the classroom. Best for each grade are published in a list on the notice boards.

I was waiting for the ABC to come - as usual summizes a foreign experience so well. Jeez, sounds so extremely regimented. Looking forward to catching up when you get back.
