Jinhua Aiqing Cultural Park 金华艾青文化公园 and Jinhua Architecture Park 金华建筑艺术公园 For the first time in a long while you the reader get to join me on an exploration of Jinhua. At the beginning of June I and my friend mike who came to visit me from my hometown in Canada. W went out to explore the wonders of the city. Our first stop was to be the "wanXiang Flower Tourist Park" being that we had gone to see this on a Tuesday. We had started our small day adventure by having lunch at FeiRock, a local western style restaurant, close to where Mike and I live. After which, we had found ourselves a taxi and was off to the races. Along with Mike, there were 3 companions with us. Princess, as most would know joins me ... read more

As most of you know for the past 10 months i have been working at Happy Goal English. On this day i knew it was going to be a long day. Not only did i hav to show up to the office at 8:30 in the morning after going to bed at 3 in the morning. Well, honestly forgetting about the trip the previous day and being woken up by a phone call asking me where i was. Then being reminded about this trip. Not only does the people have to go on this trip we also have classes later in the day. So, yippie. So after being woken up and speed dressing and driving like a crazy person to get to work in a reasonable amount of time, only just as i am getting off ... read more

WuZhou Ancient City On Saturday February the first. I went to the Wuzhou ancient City here in Jinhua along with a coworker from my job. I admit I had a certain idea on what it would be like purely based on the name. Which led me to be somewhat disappointed with the reality of what it was when I arrived. It just goes to show you that not to make judgements based purely on names. So on that Sunday, I had found out how to get to the Ancient City, via the city transit. So off I went, dropped off my ebike at the school and went for a bite to eat. then met up with Dina, the coworker i was going to go with. Up to this point I had pictured Wuzhou Ancient City, a ... read more

Well…home again… It seems like a no time at all that four months has flown by…as I mentioned in a previous post, time is very elastic… My flights and transit to Nanaimo were more or less flawless, including a trip on the third generation high-speed train from Jinhua to Shanghai: around 320kms at a top speed of 320km/h in first-class for $42—amazing! I stayed at the Oriental Riverside Bund View Hotel in Pudong, Shanghai overnight, which was a welcome break before I headed home—very nice hotel in the ultra-modern Pudong area. Shanghai is high-speed hustle and bustle and money is clearly evident. On the way to the hotel from the train station the taxi went by the Shanghai Four Seasons Hotel, which has Maserati and Ferrari dealerships on the main floor… My worries about getting my ... read more

Christmas Christmas has snuck upon us once more. This year is the 6th year that I have been away from my family during this season. A season normally, for the gathering of family members. A season of celebration with those who are close to us friends and family alike. It is also a season where even strangers have become friends. Where we spread joy and wonder to one and all. A time of year where we send cards and letters to one and all telling people what we did during the past year. For us from the northern part of the world, Christmas isn’t Christmas without the fallen snow. But being here in China especially the past few years it definitely lacked the white powder. This year being in Jinhua City of Zhejiang province and at ... read more

Greetings my fellow Ghouls and Goblins; Once again the night of Halloween creeps upon us like a slow moving fog of unholy and unnatural customed kiddies (and adults that never truly grew up). Its one of the few days of the year where us adults can don our Super Mario outfits or our little french maid outfits and not be thought of as a crazy person for doing so. Being here in China, is no real exception. Aside from the fact your teaching others about what Halloween is? The fun the joy that coming from being something your not even for an afternoon of harmless fun. Whether it is showing up as a Video Game character or the lord of Darkness, or a nurse or a Doctor... Doctor Who. No just the Doctor. (a reference for ... read more

Man-cheese Runner-up for the best tee-shirt slogan spotted this week…the winner can be found at the end of this post… Almost two-months in wacky Jinhua (New Tourism Brand: “Jinhua—it’ll be great when it’s finished…”) and thankfully the weather has moderated to ‘just about comfortable’. Observant readers will recall that the big department stores had puffy jackets and down vests on sale during 40C+ heat—well, they’re all gone (pretty much) and the Spring 2015 fashions are all on-sale… The construction noise (or ‘the dragon’ as Mary calls it—because that what it sounded like to her when she Skyped in) has also moderated to an intermittent concrete drill and jackhammer cacophony, with a smattering of sledgehammer… As I was enduring the sixth (or was it the tenth—all a jangly blur…) straight day of jackhammers as they ripped up ... read more

“CAN I HELP YOU ORDER SOMETHING?” “What?? Sorry??” coming out of my day-dream in the quasi-Japanese restaurant in the posh mall. “Can I help you order something from the menu?” Ms. Wu, a well-dressed and easy on the eyes young lady, politely asked me again. "Er, right. Sure. OK. Great! Thanks!!" sounding like a complete bonehead. I was a bit unnerved at this point as it is not normal operating procedure to actually ask a customer if they would like to order something, especially if you are a foreigner: generally you have to flap around frantically like you would to (usually unsuccessfully) outwit a particularly irritating flying insect. It was especially unnerving as the servers in this particular restaurant are about the surliest servers on the planet. I have been here before, and I am not ... read more

Fuck-Off No, not you, dear reader…that’s what it announced on the tee-shirt of one of my more demure, butter-wouldn’t-melt-in-her-mouth students, (Maggie, I think). Uh-oh…do I have a closet rebel in the class making a ‘statement’ or…? Better nip ‘it’ in the bud, whatever ‘it’ might be. I wandered over to Belinda, my lovely and indispensable translator, and quietly pointed out the naughty word, indicating that we should really have a chat with Maggie. Belinda flushed with embarrassment: apparently walking around with naughty words is not the done thing in China…not at all the done thing... “Hi, Maggie” (me being all semi-stern, but not really…) “Hello, Mr. Jefferies?” looking quizzical, with that ‘what have I done?’ look. “Maggie, er…do you know what ... read more
