Kunming has been an adventure from the second we left Dali... When we left Dali, we got on the wrong city bus. We wanted to get to the train station and ended up at the bus station. Since we hadn't bought tickets in advance, we were on a bit of a tight schedule so we had to get a taxi to take us across town to the train station. We were able to get train tickets no problem and were super happy to be back on a train instead of those stupid buses (we've had a few rough rides). We arrived in Kunming slightly ahead of schedule (another reason to love the train) and had figured out how to get to the hostel we were looking for. It was going to take two buses but seemed ... read more

Hi All, A 4 hour bus ride from Dali to Lijiang, through some really stunning scenery, which passed without a hitch. There are a lot of places to stay in the old town and we soon found one that was in our price range. It was a wooden house in the Chinese courtyard style. Some of these touristy places are becoming very similar. Although called Old Town it has a very new feel to it and boy was it busy. While Dany had a snooze in the hotel I went in search of the Mao statue, which was easy to find. A statue which I assume was erected after his death, it had his birth and death dates on the front, yet he's dressed as a Red Guard celebrating one of China's most chaotic and violent ... read more

Hi All, We wanted to go out and about around the lake today on bicycles but unfortunately the weather was against us. With getting wet climbing the mountain yesterday we didn't really fancy getting wet again so we went for a walk around the town. Dali is very small, compared with other places we've been, so it's very easy to walk from one side of the town to the other. The centre of town is very touristy but on the outskirts of the town there are still old houses and a vegetable market for the locals is still going strong in the north east part of the town. I've really enjoyed our time here and I wish it could of been longer. Dali is a great place to come if you want to relax. Enjoy the ... read more

Hi All, We decided to hire a bicycle to go out to Baisha. We chose to take a tandem which maybe wasn't the best idea. Going was hard work because we had a headwind a slight incline and a tandem built to withstand a tank attack!!! It must of weighed a ton. We shan't do that again. Baisha is about 10 kms north of Lijiang and is again another capital city of the Naxi minority. After walking around the backstreets of this little village I could begin to imagine what Lijiang may of been like before the facelift. In the village are some temples with some religious murals. It is the only place in China to have Taoist and Buddist murals together in the same temple. The murals aren't in the best condition and how they ... read more

Oct. 7 This morning we tried a Skype call (voice only) with Ron. We managed to get through and could hear him fine, but he had trouble hearing us, and it's a bit awkward with the few-seconds lag. Good to have some contact, anyway! Then we looked at the "Ladies' Market" near hotel, so named for clothing stores and beauty parlors, but these were not open yet. We concentrated on the fruit stands and convenience store, where we marveled at the giant mangoes, dragon fruit, durian (stinky fruit), and one we had never seen before called Buddha's hand (yellow basketball-sized fruit with protruding fingers? See photo.). We got together to go out at 11 and went right to lunch, to everyone's dismay. We are certainly not going hungry on this trip! After leaving much food uneaten ... read more

First of all, it's Thanksgiving weekend in Canada so I want to properly thank all of my family and friends for their love, support, patience and understanding. I wouldn't be where I am today without any of it so thank you. I should also express my thanks to Tyler. He is my rock. There aren't words to describe what an amazing person he is; I'm so lucky to have found him and to be able to go on this journey with him. I couldn't have dreamed up a better man if I tried so thank you Tyler for my morning hugs, my bed time kisses and all of the other things you do in a day. China has surprised me every day. I've got to admit, I've written this blog 4 or 5 different ways and ... read more

Oct. 6. Kunming Well, we can tell we're foreigners now if there were ever any doubt. The Golden Dragon Hotel is first class - don't get me wrong - but there must be few western travelers here, because the staff do not speak any English, and the breakfast did not make many accommodations for western tastes, except to have white bread for toasting. There was an interesting machine that looked something like an ice cream machine. I tried to ask what it was, which resulted in my receiving a glass of hot milk (?) or soy milk that was a bit sour and salty. It was indicated to me that I should add sugar. It was Ok, but I would rather have found some cold milk (the Mu type). Anyway, we had some yummy bean-paste-filled dumplings ... read more

October 1st is China's National holiday for which the majority of the country gets an entire week off. During this week, an average of 2.75 million people travel to the province we are currently in, Yunnan. For that reason, we wanted to find a nice little place to avoid the crowds for at least a couple of days. SHAXI Shaxi Village was the perfect place to do it. It's an ancient, dusty, wooden town that still survives from the millenia old Tea and Horse Trail which connected China with India and the rest of the world. This quaint little town has recently received tourism funding from the government. You can see that many renovations are being completed and there are more plans in the works uncluding a new highway which will cut at least half an ... read more

Oct. 4-5 - Today we are exploring Lijiang ("beautiful river") near Tibet, because we were not allowed to travel to Tibet itself. This is a smaller city, about 130,000. There are several minorities here (Bai, Na'xi, Tibetan), so the culture and style of dress is a little different from what we've seen. Certainly many people dress in modern style, but some also wear traditional Na'xi clothes with a vest or cloak, coin-like head pieces, and bright colors. The women's cloak always has 7 knots tied in the back that symbolize that they are expected to work in the fields until seven stars appear in the sky. According to our male guide, the women do all the work while the men are lazy and drink tea. The neatest thing about Lijiang is the central Old Town, which ... read more

We decided to take a train to Dali. We actually wanted to take a taxi but the lady in the hotel reacted with horror. She seemed to think that the expense was much too much for us. Maybe something in our appearance? So we arrived at Lijiang’s very modern train station, only to find we had to get our cases up a near vertical flight of stairs to get to the platform. We both had about 20 kilos each. Micha was pushing me from behind. Somebody took pity on me about half way up and grabbing my suitcase easily hoisted it up the rest of the stairs. Poor Micha thought he was going to have a heart attack. But we finally made it on to the train. The train was really old. We sat downstairs on ... read more
