De muur is ... read more

Chinese New Year This is entry is going to be very simple…Chinese New Year in Northern China is about getting together with family, making dumplings (jiao zi), watching TV, and shooting off mass quantities of fireworks. I honestly thought there would be parades and celebrating in the streets. I think there was something in Beijing, but I am not sure. We went to a local pub that advertised free pizza. I can tell you that when it comes to fireworks, the US has amateur status. Everyone has the opportunity to buy some serious fireworks. While they are not necessarily the professional kind, they do put on quite a display. The pub where we went, must have had about US$1000 worth of fireworks. They set them off on the sidewalk with cars parked nearby, cars driving ... read more

My apologies. In the interest of getting something on the blog, I have decided to skip putting pictures on for now. I will get them on in a few weeks. Now for some party info!! Most of you know us…We can’t go a year without our Mardi Gras party. I know I promised a few of you that I would come back to have it in Austin. I apologize. We thought it might be fun to share our Mardi Gras tradition with our new found friends. One of the great things is that we had it at a local (western food) restaurant. The owner, Hank, is from Chicago. All I had to do was decorate. All the cooking and cleaning up was done by the restaurant. I found some great decorations. You all will get ... read more

Well, the best place to start a story is at the beginning. We got to the airport, 3 hours ahead of our scheduled departure time only to discover dad forgot we needed to get visas. To be able to leave on the next day’s flight, we left the airport. We thought we were going to take a taxi in, but fate had another plan for us. Instead of such limited-space type travel, a limo driver approached us. Not your typical limo driver. One that if he approached you on the street, which he did, your first thought would be bus driver. After a glance at each other and a “what the heck” we followed the bus driver to an old white limo that looked like some rock and rollers had rocked it and rolled it. Even ... read more

I am back after a length of time. We actually have had some internet problems the last couple of day. I have actually been waiting for good stuff. I am going to start with something that happened about a month ago. It is called the Melbourne Cup. It really is the Australians excuse to take a 3-5 minute horse race and turn it into an all day party. Here is an excerpt that describes the race... (www.cultureandrecreation.gov.au/articles/melbournecup/) Melbourne Cup Day is Australia's most famous Tuesday. At 3.00pm AEST, on the first Tuesday in November, Australians everywhere stop for one of the world's most famous horse races - the Melbourne Cup. It is a day when the nation stops whatever it's doing to listen to the race call, or watch the race on TV. Even those who ... read more

I don't have any pictures at this moment. We have moved into our apartment. After 3 months of living in a hotel it is nice to be able to watch TV on a couch and cook a meal myself. Washing dishes is not fun...the dishwasher is me. I hope to take some time and take pictures of the apartment. It is much nicer than I ever expected. A couple of funny things have happened in the last couple days that I would like to share. On Monday, I went to Beijing with a friend to go grocery shopping. (Melissa, this is the only place to shop in China.) My friend Melissa Vacek and Becky Miller's daughter will understand this, you learn to appreciate the basic things in life. Like, Jif peanut butter, limes, avocados, good cheese, ... read more

..A wiec ruszamy. Naprawde. I oprawa otwarcia tez. Napisze moze kiedys cos wiecej teraz podsypiam.

After a one day delay, we have been on the road for a couple of weeks. I added so many pictures that it has taken me this long to put them on. We move into our apartment on Sunday, after 3 months in a hotel. YEA!!! Our time actually started with a banquet celebrating China's National Day. It is like our 4th of July. Dave being the acting manager was invited by the mayor's office to a banquet celebrating the 57th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. We were two of about 6-8 westerners in a crowd of 500 (give or take). We were at a table where a couple of people spoke English. We were honored to have been included in the celebration. The next day we took off for Shenzen ... read more

Wow! I can't believe it has been over two weeks since I last updated the blog. We have good news. As we settle into Tianjin TEDA, we have found out our relocation package has been approved. We decided on our apartment today and look forward to moving in by mid to late October. I also now have a cell phone so Dave can find me when I am out shopping and playing. The last two weeks have been pretty sedate. Dave has been working long hours. He is currently doing the job of two people. The local manager left to do other things and Dave is filling in until they find a replacement on top of the job he was sent here to do. He also is trying to find time to visit other offices around ... read more
