My Biggest Workout Since Landing in China Well Friday rolls around, I'm tired from a week's work, tense from sporting my backpack daily, and well, I think still full of kinks from the 16 hours on an airplane a month or so ago. It was time for my first massage. Yvonne (another teacher at the school) brought Shelby and I to her favourite masseuse. This is not like any massage I have ever had. It was fantastic but not relaxing. She was working out my knots with her elbow. Karate Chopping my back. At one point she had me on a stool, with my hands behind my head, with her back to me, she locked her arms through mine, bent over and lifted me right off the stool. While parts were...painful, most of the time ... read more

Its been another exciting week just living my life in China. Every day offers so many funny stories, that by the time Sunday rolls around I know I have forgotten a few gems. I knew as of Monday night I would have a lot of fun writing the blog this week. Good Morning! So Monday night Craig and I decided to go for dinner at "UBC Coffee", a restaurant attached to Hymall (the shopping mall). It serves coffee but is first and foremost a restaurant. We walked in and as usual there were 10-15 staff members lined up inside to greet us. They had obviously been practicing their English, and they were very excited to have two westerners walk in. They all began to chime "Good Morning! Good Morning!" Did I mention it was 6 o'clock ... read more

This time I will chronicle a few of the adventures of the past week. We will have a blog about school life soon. I am trying to keep everyone happy by balancing adventure blogs with daily life blogs. It should however be noted, that since moving here, our daily life and mundane tasks have all become mini-adventures. Our trip into Tianjin On Saturday August 18th, "the group" decided to take the light rail into Tianjin proper (Teda being more of a suburb). Luckily Xin, the new math teacher, joined us. Xin grew up in Tanggu (next door to Teda), moved to Canada in 1996, and was convinced by our principal to come back to teach at Teda International. I should think the benefits of having Xin along should therefore be quite clear. For instance, even with ... read more

We are all slowly getting settled into our routines. You have to relearn/revisit/rethink your old routines and discover what you can handle here. As requested, in this blog I will try to focus less on the adventures, and more on the basics of living here. The Apartment I think we really lucked out. We chose our apartment on our first jet lagged day in China. We had no concept of the layout of the town, a small concept of price range, and no real idea what we should be looking for. We live in an area called "Cui Hen Cun" pronounced (tsway hung tsun with inflections). It took me a few days to be able to say it properly so that the taxi knew what I was saying . Its absolutely central to TEDA. Its a ... read more

Hello and big hugs to everyone. We have arrived safe and sound in China. It has been quite the adventure already. We boarded the airplane full of excitement. We were seated beside a very sweet older chinese lady, whose English was barely better than our Mandarin. She immediately wanted to make conversation and try to help us learn her language. The plane was huge, and had all the bells and whistles. Our seats had been changed to those by the emergency exits so we had extra leg room. Everything was great. We pulled off to the runway and turned back. There was possibly a problem with the fuel pump. By the time they fixed that, they had to get another pilot and change half the flight crew and get them all entry visas. So we should ... read more

This first of 4 weeks in China is being spent almost exclusively here in Tianjin, the booming 'special economic zone' here on the northern coast. It's not major destination on the tourist circuit, yet this time has been special because of all of this things we've had access to. Let it be known that to know James Foster is to be well connected, and we've benefited from that greatly. But is it the 'real' China? To answer that, I suppose you have to examine what that means, and for that matter, what exactly is 'culture'. Is culture just the arts, or for that matter the traditional arts? How about ... read more

DAY 1 Saturday was our first full day in China. I wrote about our breakfast and bike ride in "...and then we were in China...", so let's pick up after that. I'm starting to appreciate the way this trip is beginning. Instead of hitting it full-on and trying to see every single thing I can on the tourist radar, we're sort of easing into it. Spending most of the first week of this trip in Tianjin is helping me get a feel for how things work here. Plus, we're doing things we would never be able to do on a typical tourist traj... read more

There's nothing like a bike ride in China to work off a delicious street breakfast and some jetlag. After 3 hours to Toronto from Dallas-Fort Worth, 3 hours in that Canadian airport, around 13 or 14 hours in the air, a couple more going through immigration, customs, and looking for luggage, and a wee bit more waiting for a shuttle bus to take us the 3 hours to Tianjin where our friend James lives, we made it. THE FLIGHT I was as suprised as most of you will be that to get to China from Toronto, we actually did NOT fly over any of the Pacific Ocean. How is that possible? Well, from Toronto the plane headed pretty-much due north, over the Hudson Bay and northern Canada, clipping Greenland, and then--this is what blew my mind, ... read more

Woensdag 4 juli. Het complex is zeer groot ... read more

Dinsdag 3 juli. ... read more

Sommige torens hebben wachthuisjes. De deuropening is voor een aantal toeristen een beetje krap.
Toch wel mooi hoe de muur over de bergen slingert. Wat zeker zo mooi is: behalve wij is hier niemand anders!
