Ni Hao people we LOVE! Well... the girls have been here for just over two weeks now, and we are getting very excited to move on from Tianjin to VIETNAM!!! The last two weeks have been awesome. I was really starting to get homesick, especially on my birthday, but two of my lovely girls helped to make it very special. School has just been finishing up here. It was nice that the girls got to meet some of my students, but that meant that I had to work during the weekdays. It was a little lame- since I so badly wanted to be exploring and hanging out with my girls... BUT this has forced them to have to learn a lot on their own :) which is great- it has made for some funny stories. John's ... read more

Today finds us in Tianjin, China where we have taken the day to find info, maps, etc and enjoy another round of damn fine food. Southern Japan was a pricey treat and procuring ferry tickets turned out to be far easier than finding our way to the dock! After a few interrogation sessions with helpful locals (including a spanish exchange by some strange chance) we found the obscure footbridge entrance to the departrure port and off we sailed. The journey took 53 hours and we were lucky to have a four person cabin all to ourselves. On the second night our course led us directly into a storm. The sea swelled to 20+ feet and sent waves up and over our top deck cabin. From the window the world outside undulated constantly between total darkness ... read more

I want to get back into the habit of documenting each week's adventures. I have a hodge podge of mini-adventures from the month of October to share with you and then next week we should be back on track! So I apologize if this blog is all over the map. Thanksgiving We did celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving at "The Parrot" a Western Restaurant. Its buffet style, but they actually put full turkeys on each table, so you get to carve it up, fight over the drumstick and such. It was hardly just Canadians. Our own table had two Aussies and one American besides the rest of us Canadians. The restaurant lets us all take the leftovers home, so I have a turkey in my freezer that I need to turn into soup pretty soon. Chinese Wedding # ... read more

The bonus of the service component of my job is that I get invitations to community events. The first event Craig and I have been able to attend was last Monday September 24th, 2007 - The Mid-Autumn Day Tea Party. This was Craig's first time out with me representing the school in the community, so I think it gave him a taste of some of what I have been experiencing. You walk into such an event having no idea as to the proper etiquette, really having no idea of what to expect and you just have to stay on your toes. Watch others before diving in, mimic gestures of politeness etc. Additionally, you have to be ready for anything you do to possibly be photographed. This tea party was hosted by the Teda Chamber of Commerce, ... read more

When our IT Manager Mike sent out a mass email inviting everyone from work to his wedding, a number of us thought we should decline, surely he didn't mean us newcomers...he didn't know us well enough! We were soon informed that just the opposite, he would love nothing more than to have the school fully represented at the wedding. Chinese Weddings are large affairs. When we told Mike we would come he was absolutely thrilled and has since let us know several times that we are his very good friends. Once we agreed to go, the next part was to find out what customs we ought to know about. My first source of information was Huilin Liang who runs the volunteer organization in Teda. Huilin let me know how it ought to be done. We should ... read more

My Biggest Workout Since Landing in China Well Friday rolls around, I'm tired from a week's work, tense from sporting my backpack daily, and well, I think still full of kinks from the 16 hours on an airplane a month or so ago. It was time for my first massage. Yvonne (another teacher at the school) brought Shelby and I to her favourite masseuse. This is not like any massage I have ever had. It was fantastic but not relaxing. She was working out my knots with her elbow. Karate Chopping my back. At one point she had me on a stool, with my hands behind my head, with her back to me, she locked her arms through mine, bent over and lifted me right off the stool. While parts were...painful, most of the time ... read more

Its been another exciting week just living my life in China. Every day offers so many funny stories, that by the time Sunday rolls around I know I have forgotten a few gems. I knew as of Monday night I would have a lot of fun writing the blog this week. Good Morning! So Monday night Craig and I decided to go for dinner at "UBC Coffee", a restaurant attached to Hymall (the shopping mall). It serves coffee but is first and foremost a restaurant. We walked in and as usual there were 10-15 staff members lined up inside to greet us. They had obviously been practicing their English, and they were very excited to have two westerners walk in. They all began to chime "Good Morning! Good Morning!" Did I mention it was 6 o'clock ... read more

We are all slowly getting settled into our routines. You have to relearn/revisit/rethink your old routines and discover what you can handle here. As requested, in this blog I will try to focus less on the adventures, and more on the basics of living here. The Apartment I think we really lucked out. We chose our apartment on our first jet lagged day in China. We had no concept of the layout of the town, a small concept of price range, and no real idea what we should be looking for. We live in an area called "Cui Hen Cun" pronounced (tsway hung tsun with inflections). It took me a few days to be able to say it properly so that the taxi knew what I was saying . Its absolutely central to TEDA. Its a ... read more

Hello and big hugs to everyone. We have arrived safe and sound in China. It has been quite the adventure already. We boarded the airplane full of excitement. We were seated beside a very sweet older chinese lady, whose English was barely better than our Mandarin. She immediately wanted to make conversation and try to help us learn her language. The plane was huge, and had all the bells and whistles. Our seats had been changed to those by the emergency exits so we had extra leg room. Everything was great. We pulled off to the runway and turned back. There was possibly a problem with the fuel pump. By the time they fixed that, they had to get another pilot and change half the flight crew and get them all entry visas. So we should ... read more
