(part 1) This is our second time living as an expat. Our first place was in Ghana, West Africa - we were there 2 years. It was a totally different experience to here in China. For starters we did not live in an expat community. This was very hard as we stood out being the only white family living there - everyone knew us!! we lived in a big house, all one level. But we had no running water or electricity so had to rely on a very noisy generator. It was not a safe place for me to drive around. I used one of the drivers from my husbands company once a week but the rest of the time I spent at home with Matthew who at the time was 6 months old, 2 years ... read more

Since living in China, the only real problem we have had is Matthew (who is 7) not willing to try new foods here. We have been to some lovely restaurants both Chinese and western but the only thing he eats is pizza and pasta. We have been to MacDonalds so many times we could buy shares with them!! When in supermarkets back in England it is easy to find new and exciting things to eat and cook but here its a new world to me.....I have no idea of most packets, jars and containers etc in Tesco here!! After speaking with other parents at school and where we live it seems we are not the only ones with this problem. A lot of the parents hire someone to come to there home and cook Chinese food ... read more

Where has this year gone? Matthew has been at TIS school for almost 5 months, since Feb. He has learnt so much and so many new things. He's like a sponge!! He has shot up in Maths and reading and his writing and spelling is coming along really well at a fast rate!! It has been a busy 2 weeks at school as it is coming to the end of term ready to start the summer holidays. Last week Matthew took part in his first sports day, so much different to his school back in England. Matthews took part in 8 sports/races and he did really well. He came first in the 50meters running race, 2nd in the shuttle race and 3rd in the Hurdles race!! At the school they have "house Colours" Each class/grade is ... read more

Oh my goodness........It has been the worst 6 days ever! I have had 3 very poorly boys at home with the worst tummy bug ever. Andy became ill on Saturday afternoon - my husband never gets sick....ever. It was so bad he had to take a couple of days off work which is unheard of, Andy never takes time off. Then when we thought he was over the worst....Matthew's turn on Monday night, he started at 7pm then William started at 10pm. Andy and I went back and forth all night between the 2 boys. The poor cleaning lady came in, in the morning and thought....My God what on earth has happened!! We all looked rough and we had piles of washing for her. I think she was at the point to put a big "DO ... read more

At last we have our container!!!! We have a happy mummy that = happy children = happy daddy!!! we (I!!) had 72 boxes to unpack and everywhere you turned....there was another box! The shipment staff were great and made life so much easier than I was expecting. But most is unpacked, still in a big mess, trying to find a home for everything but we are getting there. The boys found their new scooters they got for Christmas so they have been busy zooming around on them and busy playing with their other new toys that they got at Christmas!! ... read more

Matthew had his first field trip with his class at TIS. Grade 1 went to the aquarium in the next town and I was able to join them and help out. It was a great day, different to what I have experienced before!! We got there on time but it took us an hour to get in to the place due to the fact they wasn't expecting us even though the school had book weeks ago!! But while waiting outside in the sunshine, the children thought it was a great time to practise their song for the End of school show the following weekend!! Then a quick game of "Traffic Lights!" It took us another 10mins to get through the gate once we all had our tickets......there were only 17 children and 5 adults!! Once inside ... read more

Saturday was a very wet and rainy day, the first yucky day in a long time so we thought a good day to go to the indoor shoe market to get new school shoes for Matthew. A very good trip, we came out with new school shoes plus a new pair of shoes for Andy and 2 pairs for me!! And it was a quick and painless time there!! Then we went onto the Botanical Gardens in Teda. We have been past the building a few times but haven't been able to get a taxi there so we thought while we had our Mr Lv we would have a quick visit!! It was a very nice and peaceful place and I think the first place where there are no crowds!! Some lovely water gardens and huge ... read more

What a busy week it has been!! The sun has been shining and we have seen the lovely blue sky quite a bit over the past 2 weeks. The temp has reached up to 35 on a few of those days and 29/30 on the cooler days!! We took the boys to Matthew's school last weekend, they have a lovely outdoor area that parents and children of the school can use during weekends. It was only us there so the boys had enough space to just run and run!! We then spent the rest of the day at our park in Green Park with a couple of school friends. so nice to just sit back and watch the boys play all together. In the Chinese calendar, Sunday 18th May is a good day for Andy to ... read more
