I’ve survived my first week and a bit in China! To those who have e-mailed and received no response, I apologize. We haven’t had any time to breathe thus far on the journey! Since arriving, we have been moving non-stop, from meetings about the school and the job to shopping at the German version of Costco, Metro, and Walmart (but not just regular Walmart. The Walmart SUPERmart) both within one-hour time frames. Shopping for everything you need in a one-hour time frame inside giant warehouse-style stores in one hour is bad enough, but when most labels are in Chinese only, it’s a little worse. Both times I forgot to buy food. We’ve been eating out almost every meal (tonight was an enormous banquet thrown by the “chairman” of the school—check out the photos of the three ... read more

Well, we’re here and mostly settled in. The flight from Victoria to Vancouver was a bit anti-climactic. Loading 6 suitcases plus carry-on bags into the van, driving to the airport finding two carts to shift the stuff to the check -in desk is a lot of work for a 15 minute flight. Then we had to pick up the bags and repeat the process in Vancouver because the Air Canada flight isn’t a connection to the Japan Air Flight. But at least our passports and visas were waiting for us there. Now that the Olympics are over the visa process should return to normal making these things a little less exciting. We were wondering what would happen if they had been delayed! The flight to Japan was just over 9 hours. With 60 teachers, some spouses ... read more

Hello all! Well, here I am, back in Dalian, China, for another fun-filled trip. This time I will be here for about 5 months to study the Mandarin language some more at the same university I studied at last year, Dalian University of Foreign Languages. This is my first blog entry, and although I really enjoyed making the blogs last year, this time I won't be doing so many (or doing so many videos). I want to relax and stay off of my computer as much as possible while I am here, so my blogs might only be every couple of weeks or so. I arrived here about 2 weeks ago, and got all set up in a nice apartment in a high-rise, and while I am not posting pictures now I did upload a short ... read more

This past weekend I went to Dalian, along with about half of my fellow classmates. Dalian is a city in the Liaoning Province of China and is sandwiched between ocean. One side faces out towards mainland China and Beijing, the other faces Korea, North Korea if im not mistaken. Some background on Dalian: It's claim to fame in contemporary China is its urban planning and urban form. While the city is an important tourist destination, it is also famous as one of the most 'livable' cities in China for its own residents - the first Chinese city to be recognized as one of the UN's 'Global 500'. Today's Dalian is a visual encyclopedia of Tsarist Russian, Japanese imperial, Chinese Socialist and Chinese Modernist ideas about urban planning and the organization of city space and people. We ... read more

Nous ... read more

Togturen tog cirka 3½ time.

Fredag havde jeg ... read more

Hver klasse ... read more

My friend Violetta arranged for a couple of concerts and some "masterclasses" at Universities in both Shenyang and Dalian. Shenyang is the capital city of Liaoning--the province just north of North Korea, and Dalian, "the most livable city in China", is 4 hours south on the sea. Arriving at the University, I was a little taken back to see my photo with my name and resume in Chinese plastered on the front marquee of the theater--the very first thing you see as you enter through the gates. It sure upped the ante on my end. Just for your information, my name in Chinese is "Li Cha Gao Dun". Two great things about being with Violetta. 1) Violetta can translate the most mundane sentence into what seems to be poetry (so I was told by an observer). ... read more
