A monster storm hit Beijing last night, all Tiefa got was a lot of rain. We woke to rain, so Tai Chi was cancelled. Instead, Nora, Mike and I ventured to the Farmers market to try our hand at shopping. We purchased melons, lichee, nectarines and stuffed donuts. We gathered a crowd, everyone helping to translate what we wanted and how much. I think we made the merchant's day! We forgot that the guide books said to bargain, thank goodness, because Haihong said that they all gave us a good price. The lack of tourists makes a difference, the merchants do not get jaded.... read more

The last month has been a whirlwind of activity and paper. B.C teacher licenses, retirement, pensions, and VISA info was the first round. Then selling the house, arranging for storage, dealing with mail, finances, cards, computers, phones, vehicles, packing and sorting - you know the routine. Everytime you check off something from your list, 3 more things pop up. It has been invaluable to have Rick at home to be dealing with so many of the items on the list. We had a great garage sale where we got rid of a lot of unneeded items. Having the last hour with all items free really cleaned us out! Our house is looking pretty barren, though, as we continue to pack up pictures and knickknacks. Now the major decisions are what to take in our 2 suitcases! ... read more

Each morning after breakfast a number of us, a differing number each day, walk up to the Pagoda here in Teifa. The first day I took a taxi up the steepest part. The second day, I stopped just before the 365 steps to the top. Today, I not only climbed the steps, but climbed to the top of the pagoda to the top and the best view of the city. I have included a couple of scenes from around the city that you might be interested in. Please notice that folks live in large high rise blocks, and the gardens replace lawns. Men really do play mahjong instead of sit in coffee shops gossipping and the shops are plentiful and colorful. They work hard to keep the city clean.... read more

We attended a festival celebrating the companies achievement of one year without a death. Americans are rare in this part of the world, so they immediately came up and asked us to sign the banner. Trust me, we are no Angelina and Brad, but we were asked anyway. They also asked us for pictures with them. These dancers are all over 55, that is worth celebrating too! The male chorus was wonderful!... read more

Yesterday was quite and important day, we went to meet Haihong's mother. First, of course was tai chi. Then, after a wonderful breakfast of savory pancake, we walked up to the temple. But, for lunch we met Haihong's family. We didn't realize how fancy this was. Nora, Sara's American grandmother, got a pearl necklace and a jade bracelet as a gift, a silver ring for Mike, the American Grandfather, and a jade bracelet for me. We are blown away by the hospitality of the people here. Of course, this is one of the rare places where Americans are not all over the place.... read more

The first leg of our journey begins here in Tiefa, a small city of 250,000 close to Shenyang in the north. We are the guests of HaiHong's sister Haiyan and her family. The Chinese show extraordinary hospitality. The apartment is quite comfortable and Hayan's cooking is wonderful with liberal use of fresh vegetables even for breakfast. We have had surprising little jet lag and have been starting our days around 5:30 accompanying HaiHong to TaiChi. There are several groups that meet each morning. Many people are in their 60's and perform with ease. We stood in the back row trying to iimitate the moves. On the second morning we were given a few pointers and it was a little easier, although to them we no doubt looked ridiculous. We were treated to a demonstration by the ... read more

The class at Tai Chi this morning tried to teach us the proper form today. Haihong says that I look like I am catching mosquitoes! It is harder than it looks, but these folks are so flexible that it would be worth knowing more about it.... read more

Don't ever take two sleeping pills! The upside is the plane ride goes really, really fast, the down side is it is hard to get out of the stooper! We left Chicago, stopped in Washington, Dulles, for breakfast. I will never diss a travel lounge again, what luzury to sit in the VIP lounge. We flew over Canada, saw ice floating in St. George Bay, and then sleep. Arrived Bejing on time and caught a plane to Shenyang. We were picked up there by van with a friend of Haihong and arrived to alovely apartment. The first day was busy, Tai Chi in the morning, breakfast with the best friend mushrooms ever, a hike up to the temple, lunch, and nap and then .... a massage by 3 blind masseuse, I kid you not, it was wonderful. ... read more

The months since the spring holiday have been filled with visits, weekend trips, and surprising changes. My delightful parents came for a three week visit and toured me around Qingdao (home of the 2008 Olympic sailing port) and Dandong (directly on North Korea's shores); I partook in a glamourous photo shoot that lasted 10 hours without food and learned a model's life isn't actually as easy as it looks (photos to be added later this week); and I accepted a position as co-department head for English 10 in September (where I will be heading the boy's campus). My parents, if anything on their visit, fed me well. We ate every possible type of food available to us (which spanned from Chinese to Japanese, Korean, Mexican, Italian, and "Western"). Qingdao was a cool city with a very ... read more

Next week Mike and I, along with my sister Marilyn, Andrew our son, will be on our way to China. There we will meet up with HaiHong our daughter-in-law and granddaughter Sara. The Middle Kingdom is the Chinese view of their own country--the center of the world with the other countries on the periphery, not unlike most Americans. We have never been out of the country, except for a breif stay in Canada, and are filled with anticipation. We will try to post our daily sojourns along with pictures as we go along... read more
