Less than a week before we go, packing is started and we have set up the blog. Travellers: Andrew Ehrensing, my nephew, Nora Ehrensing, my sister and her husband, Mike Ehrensing, and, of course, me. Andrew is married to Hai Hong Tian, they have a baby girl, Sara, who is almost a year old. Hai Hong has taken Sara to China to meet her family, we are joining her there. We leave June 12 at 6 AM from Chicago, Nora has already given up coffee (less public toilets to contend with) and I am working to adjust my sleep schedule. The only thing we haven't done is learn Chinese!... read more

The start of term 4 is upon us and the biggest news is not that I have finally been replaced and get to start my new job as a stay-at-home spouse. The big news is that Dianne has been named the ESL Systems Coordinator for the entire Maple Leaf Education System as of May 4th. I’ll turn the blog over to her so she can describe the new job: How do I describe my new job? Well, the job description is a “work in progress” as this is a totally new position for the company. Basically, I will oversee all the ESL programs, meet with the different ESL Directors from each school, plan Professional Development, rewrite the learning outcomes for the pre-Grade 10 ESL programs, redesign the ESL Placement tests and the Grade 10 Entry tests, ... read more

Mundanity? I feel as though it suits what the past couple of months have been since returning from holiday. I was sick with a lung infection for about 4 weeks (check out my exciting lung x-ray in the photos), and this weekend I was finally struck by a rather horrific stomach bug that has been plaguing our school. It was the first weekend I finally felt well enough to go out since my lung infection, so I was all dressed up, and headed by cab into Dalian, only to arrive at the bar where my friends were meeting to discover that there was no possible way I could keep my dinner down. So, head between my knees, I took the $20 cabride 40 minutes back home without ever exiting. Mundanity, indeed. There are a little less ... read more

Back from Canada a month ago, where does the time go? Well, for me it is same old, same old. Not all of our bags made it back so I had to take an unscheduled trip back to the airport to pick up the missing two cases. Luckily the principal was coming in about the same time so the school van was making a run to Dalian to pick him up as well as some school supplies at Metro. I got a ride to the airport and our major shopping centre too. Bonus! The downside was that on the way back to the school he mentioned that "we" were unable to get the replacement teacher we wanted so I would have to teach half time this term. And the term started the next day! The course ... read more

The five week break from school flew by, leaving me with a whirlwind of memories from the places I visited across Southeast Asia. I'll give a very condensed version of events, and let some of the pictures do the talking. We left Dalian on January 19th, and flew to Hangzhou, just outside of Shanghai. While we were really only there a few hours (discounting sleep), we managed to squeeze in a boatride across the picturesque (and famous) lake before heading out to the airport to catch our plane to Kuala Lumpur. I'd never travelled with a group of teachers before, and found the plane ride to be rather enjoyable as we ended up writing stories and games on paper which, while incredibly nerdy, helped to pass the time! After arriving in KL, our group disbanded, and ... read more

After a fun-filled four days in Hong Kong, we returned for three days of classes before the New Year’s break. We decided to be lower key this weekend and booked two nights in at the Kempinski hotel in downtown Dalian. Almost like booking a hotel in your own city but comparing downtown Dalian to Manjiatan is like comparing night and day. Classes were out at noon on New Year’s Eve so all the staff could attend the gala New Year’s party. It really isn’t a party, it’s a stage show featuring the staff in various song and dance numbers and the odd skit. It’s mostly in Chinese but still enjoyable. The enthusiasm and talent of “ordinary” staff members is incredible. After the show we rushed out to the school gates where our trusty driver Jack was ... read more

The four day Christmas Break finally arrived. No rest for us however, as we were up at 5:00 am Christmas Day to get ready for our 6:00 am pickup by our driver who whisked the four of us off to the Dalian airport. We were off to Hong Kong with Thomas, a teacher from the school, and his wife, Feng-wei, who grew up in China and went to high school in Hong Kong. She trained as a nurse in Britain and met Thomas in Canada! They have traveled all over the world and make awesome travel guides. We discovered just how good Feng-wei was to travel with even before we left. They had already booked their flights at really reasonable prices. When we looked into it, the prices were ridiculously expensive but we decided to go ... read more

I worked hard to bring Christmas to China when I was packing for this journey in the summer. I sent a box that had a stocking, several familiar ornaments, and a box of Stovetop stuffing with gravy; I downloaded Christmas CDs and stocked up on red pillowcases and tea towels (I'm slightly Martha Stewart). I pictured using a plant as a Christmas tree. As it turned out, Christmas is alive and kicking in China, from the pop-up Christmas cards in Trustmart to the Elf-clad waiters in Pizza Hut (which, by the way, I never entered, but saw from the outside). I bought myself a 5' tree (just slightly shorter than myself and a wee bit tilted), lights, ornaments, and garlands (which I wound around the bannister). My place looked festive like no other place I've lived ... read more

Well, we are still at it here in China! It has been quite a time since my last blog entry and all of a sudden, it is Christmas. We haven't done much in the way of Christmas decorating this year and have been so busy it hasn't really seemed like Christmas. It's cold enough with the winds we get but, with no snow to speak of and no decorations or music around the place, it doesn't seem like Christmas is approaching. We went to a pot-luck at friends who had gone all out for the holidays so Dianne decided we will do better next year. The two Santa hats were given to us by a staff member to wear at a student Christmas party on Tuesday night where Dianne and I will be doing a choral ... read more
