This will likely be my last blog from China/Nanjing -- although I might sneak another one in once I get home if you are lucky should I miss something. Anyway this was to be my penultimate day in Nanjing so I thought I had better try and cross off a a few things that I had been too slack to get around to doing. I was all intent on making first off the Nanjing Memorial Hall to what the Japanese did in 1937. I checked with the hotel as to what was the best metro stop to go to (it is always annoying when such things are only 75 m off the Lonely Planet map) and headed off to the nearest metro stop which happens to be on the same crosstown E-W line (the other runs ... read more

I blathered on rather too long in the last one -- with a few snaps -- so more snaps will make up for hopefully brief text (otherwise I will never get to bed). That was my excuse last night -- had to catch up with sleep so went to bed at 10:30 PM and did not get up till 10:30 AM. Just spent some time in the room looking at the Net and so on and finding out what sites were blocked by the Chinese cyber snoopers - quite a lot like Facebook etc. Anyway finally got out late in the afternoon and decided to take a metro ride to the east to the Ming palace ruins area, being well aware that there was virtually nothing left. This was indeed the case, particularly when it is ... read more

As I said last time sometimes there has to be a "gap" so I can catch up with myself and have a rest. After breakfast yesterday (was it really?) in Suzhou I went for a quick walk to try and catch up with the canal type area. However the Lonely Planet rightly says most of them have been filled over and I'd likely got as much a view of them before. My train was at 11:44 AM so I wanted to leave from the hotel at 11 to give myself enough time. However with a slight delay on checkout and then having to rush over to Renmin Lu to try and hail a taxi on a busy Saturday morning things were a little delayed. Fortunately this taxi driver was doing all the shortchanges and shortcuts that ... read more

Nanjing hasn't been that exciting for us. On our first night we searched to get some laundry done. When we found a place she wanted to charge us $40 USD... thats RIDICULOUS, so of course we said no, packed up our clothes and went back to our hotel. We searched online for a hostel that had laundry facilities and booked 2 nights there. We went out for a walk and found a cool little walking streeet with lots of shops and stalls. It was all tourist prices... and we didn't bring the camera so we have no photos. Guess what Tris spotted... WALMART!!!! We haven't been into a walmart in 10 months! So we went to check it out. Their Walmarts SUCK compared to ours. For an ugly hoodie they charge $20! Thats the cheapest we ... read more

Geo: 32.0617, 118.778In China, usually you have one good day and then one bad day...Yesterday was good but I knew it was going to be bad when I poured what I thought was milk into my "wake me up" morning coffee.I looked a little thick. I thought OK.... cream would be OK. NO... It was drinking yoghart. In the store it was right next to the milk... in the same bottle... it was white... What else could it be?DRINKING YOGHART..... If you can't read Chinese it's an easy mistake. The ayie (maid) came nice and early. Perfect. I was frantically trying to translate that I had to go out and I would be back at 1pm to lock up.Then I felt that my feet where a little wet. AHHH... WHAT?I looked up to see the huge fish ... read more

Geo: 32.0617, 118.778What a beautiful day.Met up with the Zinkiewicz's for a day of sight seeing.Saw our first kites. Very beautiful.Saw lots of temples and crazy GOLD statues. The huge budda with loads of little kids was the best. The temples where built on the hill side. There where odd stairs taking us up higher and higher. It was worth the effort. The signs where all very odd. The translations wheren't quite right. The best one was about Bank Insurance.....Ahhh.... Can't expalin that one.Went to lunch at a fantastic place... I think I need to keep track of things a little bit better...We ate and ate and ate....Great day... read more

So Shanghai got a little too pricy (although Beijing also spoils the heck out of you – 2 kuai to take the metro system anywhere in Beijing, I have no idea how the city can support that). So after seeing the bund again at night, seeing the Shanghai museum, and LuXun’s house, we’re (I’m) taking a detour to Nanjing. Without further ado: Aug 19th: With my larger luggage stored at the Shanghai hostel, and having caught a cold in Shanghai (something about the hostel here is driving my sinuses nuts), I got on the train at 10 and got into Nanjing around 11:40. At the Shanghai train station, I was informed that one of the students from the high school that my high school has a great relationship with would pick me up at the train ... read more

Yep that's right - I'm going back in time to discuss my experiences in "South Capital." When I visited Nanjing about three weeks ago it was hot and humid. Luckily the city is not too crowded. Large trees provide shade to the friendly people, and there are many canals running parallel to the not-so-busy streets. Nanjing used to be the capital of China, and it has witnessed many important events in Chinese history. The medieval city walls are still standing. It was great to see a lively evening dance club for the elderly (ubiquitous in the People's Republic) right next to the 700-year-old brick structure. Another must-see in Nanjing is the city's museum. It is free and air conditioned, and contains loads of old artifacts, including a famous Jade Suit worn by a dead king more ... read more
