I really hope this link works... http://www.flickr.com/x/t/0098009/gp/49003535@N05/8n8r0E Created a Flickr account so I could display footage I took after climbing a "mountain" on Sunday. I find the video kind of humorous because my manager did NOT want to be on camera, so she took over. The first part of the video shows a donkey cart moving on the road in the distance; you can't really see it clearly but that was actually why I started filming. To my Chinese-speaking viewers: I apologize in advance for my horrible pronunciation. Rough trascript: "Manager Zhang!" "I'm too ugly!" "No, you're not! Tell my family hi!" Laughter, camera switches hands. "It's recording." "You didn't record me did you? Ok, hi Samantha! How was today?" "I'm feeling good. I'm at Shi Ren Wan, Stone Man Gulf" *attempts to end filming by ... read more

石人湾 or Shi Ren Wan- Stone Man Gulch Wa sei! That was what I and my manager kept saying whenever we saw the next rise we had to climb on our mountain today. It's kind of like saying, "Whoa..." I got up in time for an 8:30 breakfast with Amy (my manager), and discovered upon reaching the cafeteria that the time for meeting our guides had been moved up, and we were now running late. I wolfed down a boiled egg and grabbed a cup of yogurt. We jumped into Amy's car and were off. Amy drove like a bat out of heck. Traffic in Huhehaote is normally kind of chaotic, and the right-of-way seems to be "whoever gets there first;" but I was actually feeling a little nervous about the way she was driving and ... read more

Me and my big mouth Today was another clear, beautiful day, although I did not get a chance to go outside. The weather was fine; work, not so much. In lieu of an adventure in rush hour traffic, I took a nap. I was still in a somewhat downcast mood when I woke up, but, like the weather, things can change really fast. It happened when I ran into one of my managers at dinner. She is one of the head honchos at the hotel, and this means everyone (self included, of course) is slightly in awe of her. She is really quite nice to me though, perhaps because I'm shy and living thousands of miles from home. Anyway, she was telling me about a recent hike she took in the mountains, and how tall and ... read more

It's April Fool's Day, and the joke's on me There's nothing like a trip to the market to remind me how ignorant I am. It's a beautiful day in Huhehaote, not far above the freezing point with a stiff wind blowing but sunny and clear. Inspired to get out, I walked to the nearby grocery store to restock on supplies. The walk is short, but it always feels a little bit longer if I get stared at. Today was one of those days, and I was feeling self-conscious, until I passed the usual fruit vednors with their hand-scales and saw an entrepreneur of a different sort. There it was, a bronze statue of a leopard the size of a small dog. Its owner was sitting proudly on the front steps of a building, and people approached ... read more

Painted eggs, tomb sweeping and a synchronistic holiday weekend Yesterday I was called over to my supervisor's desk and told that I would have Monday off. I asked her if we had a holiday coming up, and she told me we would be off for 清明节 (Qingming Jie or "Clear Bright Festival"). She added that it was a holiday in honor of the dead. I felt a slight chill, because this weekend is also Easter. How odd that the two holidays should coincide! In fact, this year Clear Bright Festival, also known as Tomb Sweeping Day, falls the day after Easter Sunday. This wasn't the first time I had heard of Tomb Sweeping Day: one of my Chinese friends has a name that sounds vaguely like 清明; as a result, one of his more eccentric foreign ... read more

No, I really couldn't think of a better title ...That's just kind of how I feel right now. I'm on my dinner break, listening to some good music. For some reason, perhaps simply the whims of fate, I woke up in an excellent mood today. Accordingly, my day has been going well. Attitude really is everything, although there have been no catastrophes to speak of on my shift so far. There usually aren't any problems, come to think of it, but that doesn't mean there haven't been the occasional odd and/or stressful experiences. You see a lot of weird stuff when you work in the service industry. I discovered today that translation can be about much more than knowing how to use your dictionary. A colleague from another department asked me to translate an advertisement, and ... read more

Blogging again! Finally found an...accessible blogging platform, although having to use formatting codes leaves a little to be desired. I can't even remember the last time I blogged...because I couldn't log in or even see the websites! (Can you tell I'm a little bitter about internet access issues?) Anyway, I'm glad to be blogging again and hopefully it will be entertaining for those who read it. Duration of "Mission: Sam in China" so far: six months and 18 days. I'm not counting, it's just that the day I flew into Huhehaote is burned on my brain. I was scared out of my mind: I had no idea what to expect or if I would be "good enough" to meet the challenge of living and working abroad. I haven't seen as much of China as would like, ... read more

It's a 2 days trip to see one of the most beautiful grassland in China. Jul to Aug is the best time to go there as the grass has grown fully and beautiful flowers can be seen abundantly on the grassland. It is very relaxing to sit on the grassland and enjoyed the view that nature have for all of us. You can also be involved in activities like horse riding and birds viewing. Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has a different feel from a typical chinese city. From the food, drinks and building architectural. One of the symbol commonly seen is the blue and white mongolian tent. We did not have much information about this city before the trip so we booked a car from the local travel agency for both days. The first day to ... read more

Day 486: Wednesday 28th October - I thought travelling was stress free? Unusually I am writing this as it is fresh in the memory, the same evening sipping a beer and enjoying the sense of achievement. Let me explain. Winding the clock back half a day ago and I am woken by the guard on the train from Beijing half an hour before we arrive in Hohhot (pronounced Huhehaote), the capital of Inner Mongolia. I look out to the more barren landscape that confronts me now, a landscape closer to winter than that of Beijing and surrounds and psyche myself up for the day ahead. Tibet was meant to be sorted before I came to Hohhot but that plan, well didn’t go to plan as simple as that! At least the start of the day is ... read more

Day 3 The third day in Inner Mongolia included another early wake up call and another long morning drive. From somewhere near the desert, we drove another 5 or so hours to the grasslands. We were greeted at the grasslands with a ceremonial sip of 白酒 (chinese rice liquor) and a mongolian lunch. At some point during lunch, the manager of the tour company that took us around came to talk to us about our afternoon activities. First there would be horseback riding, in which you could choose 1-6 locations in which to visit. He listed the locations for us: 1.grasslands 2.lake 3.Mongolian family 4.fields of tall grass 5.mountain path 6.prayer temple. The more sites you chose, the more you paid. After the horse back riding, they would offer a display of horse racing and Mongolian ... read more
