We left Xian on the bullet train to Luoyang, we had planned to get the bus but when we asked about going by bus everyone looked at us like we were stupid, so we took their advise and got the bullet train. To be truthful yes it is a lot quicker but a lot more expensive and the train station we ended up at, Luoyang longmen is a long way outside of the city so cost another 60rmb to get to the hotel. once again we got in a taxi having shown the driver the address, who then looked like he knew where he was going only for him to have to ask someone else where it was. Thank god once again for our grasp of mandarin and a map to point at. What can you ... read more

When I arrived at longmen, I was overwhelmed by the great Buddhist art found there. Thousands of caves and niches can be witnessed along the great limestone cliffs extending for about a mile and containing more than 100,000 Buddhist stone statues. For the lovers of Buddhist history, Longmen is probably one of the most striking Buddhist site I have seen, while travelling in China. The grottoes are situated about ten kilometers south of the historical city of Luoyang and I lodged in a guest house just outside of downtown. The entire complex is settled in a beautiful mountain scenary on both sides of the Yi river. It was a lovely day at the end of october, the air was not aggressive, tourism diminished, twittering birds created a lovely ambiance, street vendors selling food and those imposing ... read more

Another ancient and exciting place I encountered on my unforgettable and long trip in China. I arrived in the historical city of Luoyang at night, as it often happen when travelling long distances. Even though it was dark I could not miss the splendid entrance of my place that I found there called properly: 红门. A beautiful and old red door that led to this place where I stayed for a few days. My reason for being here was mainly for the famous and ancient Shaolin temple. I caught a bus to get there and took about three hours one way to arrive there. I was really exciting to be in the place where more than 1400 years ago the Zen buddhism and this mortal art of the Kung fu were born. But, as it happened ... read more

Luoyang and Zhengzhou in central China, 9 & 10 May 2015 Today we experienced out first Bullet Train ride, from Xi’an to Luoyang, one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. The railway station was another very new, big station. We had to wait for 1 ½ hours, only because we arrived early. The train was punctual, as you would expect. We had 3 minutes to get the 37 of us and our suit cases on the train but by now, we were all a well oiled machine. We had no one wing the group who we had to wait for. Once on the train, in our designated seats, it was no time before the train was traveling at 303 kph. It certainly didn’t feel like that speed, and the train was very quiet and ... read more

Three-and-a-half years after I formally submitted the adoption application, the day has finally arrived! With enormous trepidation, Maya and I made our way to the adoption office with our lovely guide, Tiger. There were a number of other families already milling around the scattered tables and chairs, all of them turning anxiously towards the door every time it opened in anticipation of the arrival of their new child. Their faces collectively fell as they caught sight of my pasty white face (a not uncommon occurrence!) and they sat back to await the next door opening. Maya and I looked at each other and silently agreed not to be overwhelmed by anxiety. Instead, we began singing the Sondheim tunes from “Into the Woods” and giggling every time we mucked up the lyrics. Finally, the children arrived in ... read more

The priorities here are sometimes every so slightly askew. Sam's left foot is quite bulbous and his shoes tend to irritate him. He had a tendency to kick his left shoe off at every opportunity, so I switched to warm, woolly socks, but he still kicks off the sock from his left foot. I am frequently accosted by people in the street for "allowing" Sammy to have a bare foot in early spring. The best example of this was a woman who vociferously berated me from a scooter stopped at the lights, while her unhelmeted, unrestrained children dangled precariously at all angles... because, colds are serious, people!... read more

It’s so fantastic that we were able to be with Sammy for his third birthday on the 19th of March. Kym invited her students to join us. They all ensured that Sammy was the belle of the ball, but he only had eyes for the cream on his cake, which quickly sent him into a diabetic coma, which enabled the girls to par-tay. Giggity!... read more

Caroline Well, we made it! And on the scheduled planes, which will come as no small surprise to Katrena, Sandra and Helen, who have lots of experience with the misunderstandings I have with so many airline carriers that inexplicably fail to appreciate Caroline Standard Time (CST). Off to collect Sammy today. Woo hoo! Maya Phew! That was a HUUUGE trip! We went on two - count them - two plane rides. The first one was really long and I couldn't sleep much because the chairs were soooo uncomfortable, but I watched Rio and Big Hero 6, which were great! The next ride was shorter, and I fell asleep for all of it, and mum stole my hamburger! I am so excited to see Sam today. I can't wait.... read more

LOUYANG. REST DAY. ( Apologies if this was posted with photos previously: said it posted but the said not published, hence republish) LOUYANG is famed for its LONGMEN GROTTOES so today I visited them with a couple of the group. We took a taxi, the more energetic, their bikes! The Grottoes are numerous caves in which are hidden various statutes of Buddha, some large, some small. The Grotto hugs the LOUYANG R. On the opposite bank is the Pagoda Temple and villa occupied by Chaing-I-Chek, the general who fought the Japanese at Nanjing, along side Mao. CIC was the leader of the Koumertang?? who in 48-49 fought Mao, before escaping to Taiwan to form a non communist government. The Grotto, river bridge and villa/pagoda were appealing. Will probably eat Chinese again this evening. Last night ate ... read more
