Chongdugou, Finally the Victor…. This past weekend my school took all 11 foreign teachers on a two-day outing for this semester. Chongdugou is national/state park outside of Luoyang about four hours away. In America it would be a slightly above average state park at best. Chinese people seem to be enthralled by anything involving nature. I think its due to the majority spend all their time living in large cities. Me being from the great state of West Virginia, it takes something extraordinary in nature to impress me. The park was filled with small Chinese hostels of only 20 or so rooms. They try to sell it has “come see what country living is like” but no one is doing any type of farming or any other type of “country” activities. However the food we ate ... read more

It’s time to head back to the U.S. We pack our bags and prepare for the long journey to the other side of the planet. Chinese Grandfather is exhausted from the baby party celebrating so “Uncle Has-A-Car” drives us to the airport. At the check in, our momentum is halted just as when we were flying China East last time. Our tickets are “closed” and need to be “opened”. We still don’t know what this means and a series of phone calls ensue. Different from the previous incident, this time it’s both of our tickets, not just mine. Other customers are passing us by as we wait and wait for the issue to be resolved. It feels like a lifetime of delay as we are surrounded in a chaos of Chinese language (the uncle was adamant ... read more

We are celebrating the first month of life for Baby Eris and a banquet is on the calendar. Well actually it’s a little less than a month so Julie could attend before our departure. The baby is officially presented to the extended family and friends at a party. When we arrive, Julie is given a beautiful silk scarf and she wears it for the rest of the event. Round tables are decorated and already have appetizers available for all the arriving guests. A table at the front door is dressed with bright red cloth and littered with packs of cigarettes for the male invitees. Monetary gifts in lucky red envelopes are being offered from every guest that arrives. Xiao Xiao has great patience letting her baby be passed around in the crowd of friends and family. ... read more

We have been in China 12 days at this point. Questions have been coming from friends and family about what's different between here and the USA. A collection of random comments and observations is here for you. 1. Many kitchens do not have hot water. Although the bathrooms have hot water, it seems there's no use for hot water to clean the dishes or pots and pans. We are staying at a 'luxury' condo building that is not that old and our kitchen does not have hot water. Julie and I boil water to do the dishes. 2. And speaking of hot water, most folks have a tank on the roof of their building heated by the sun. At Chinese Grandfather’s house, there was no hot water for two days this week because of the rain ... read more

We are tourists again as we make our way to Longmen Grottoes. Chinese Grandfather borrows his brother’s car to take us. We meet our newest interpreter, Sherry, and depart on our expedition. Longman Grottoes is one of those places that make you realize how ancient the Chinese culture is. Thousands of sculptures are carved into a giant rock hillside. It’s saddening to see the obvious defacing that has occurred over the years. It’s clear to see which vandalism was from foreigners stealing or the Cultural Revolution just simply disfiguring out of simultaneous rage and courage to make change. To climb the stairs to see many of the sculptures also makes you realize how hard it must have been to traverse the rock in ancient times to get to the works of art that were in progress. ... read more

Baby Eris is 20 days old and is ready for her first bath and a weighing. But first, Chris takes Julie and me out for lunch. We head to a Muslim restaurant where we get a mutton noodle soup and yummy, roasted peanut & tofu side. Back at Chinese Grandfather's apartment, the new family strikes out on the journey. This is only the second time Xiao Xiao and Eris have ventured out of the apartment. Since there are no baby seats, we urge Chris to sit in the back of the car directly behind one of the front seats instead of the middle seat. Is there any science to this? Who knows, but it makes us feel better about an unsecured baby in a car. Our first stop is for Chris and Xiao Xiao to visit ... read more

We have received several questions about the apartment where Julie and I are staying. This post is dedicated to Chris and Xiao Xiao's apartment. Xiao Xiao and baby Eris are staying at her father's (Chinese Grandfather). Chris is back and forth staying with Xiao Xiao and sometimes sleeping here. Julie and I have been sleeping in the master bedroom where there is a space heater. The building has central heat with radiators throughout. However the tenants and owners have not been able to agree to share the expense of turning on the system. Chris has two dogs so we also have to be mindful of which areas of the apartment are doggie-proof. Our travelers’ bags and items are littered throughout the picture of the master bedroom. Usually all those items wouldn’t be on the floor for ... read more

After being tourists, we are looking forward to baby visiting. After all, the day before was the first day that we didn't visit Eris. We are making up for it today. Eris is so much more alert than when we first arrived. She notices objects around the room and tracks with eyes when the objects move. She recognizes faces and will look at you long after you put her down from holding her. There is a lot of Skype the past two days with the USA family. Baby Eris is known internationally! Chinese Grandfather cooks us a delicious meal that includes Julie's request for eggplant. There was also winter melon with pork, cauliflower with beef, and cilantro fish. Then more baby :) Enjoy the pictures. Up next, Baby Eris gets a check-up.... read more

We are planning and preparing for our journey to Xi'an. After sleeping in again (yeah!), Chris takes us for lunch. This place has a great menu for us since there are large, color pictures. Chris orders his favorite pork and pepper dish. We also get some stir-fried cabbage and a clear noodle dish. Julie gets her regular craving for ice cream. We make a quick visit to McDonald's. I'm not an ice cream fan, but maybe I will get an apple pie. Even though the burgers are exact, the fries look perfect, apple pies are not available. There's pineapple and taro only. We head to baby central to get our mandatory Eris time. We (well mostly Chris) work on an itinerary for our jam-packed touring day. It’s a tight schedule and we are hoping there's enough ... read more
