Our bus to Ping An left Yangshuo just before 8am and about 3 hours later we changed to a smaller bus which stopped at a small village so we could have a look at some longhaired women. This place was very touristy with all the ladies from the village trying to sell us souvenirs and charging people to take their photo. Also, besides our busload of mostly Chinese tourists there must have been about 5 more buses full of tourists at the village as well. After wandering around for 10 minutes they ushered us into a large building where we sat through a short but entertaining cultural show. The length of the ladies hair was impressive, almost reaching the ground. From here it was back on the bus where we drove along a pretty river before ... read more

hey everyone, here are our pictures from the rice terraces, they are said to be the oldest rice terraces in the world (over 650 years). We were pretty lucky with our weather, it was cloudy, but not as foggy as what we heard from other travelers. We had a great day and enjoyed the small villages and mountains surrounding the Terraces! :) Hope you enjoy! Randi and Quinn... read more

After the horrible early start (got up at 5:20AM) in Huai Hua I got on the train. Hard seat carriages have 3 person seats on one side and 2 person seats on the other. Every single 3 person seat was taken up by a person lying down sleeping, so that left only the 2 person seats. They were nearly all taken, but I found one with a working window. The first 2 hours were nice enough. Then a few people left and I grabbed a 3 person seat and tried to have a nap for another hour. I checked my map and realised that this train actually went pretty close to a place called LongSheng, the gateway to the ‘Devil’s Backbone Rice Terraces’, a place I wanted to see. So I got off the train after ... read more

I made two trips to Longji and spent about four days here in total. As previously mentioned my first visit was with a quick day trip three Dutch lads, who let me slow them down (I apologise for my lack of speed) hiking up to the view point. Thanks for letting me join you guys, and for drinks in the evening :-). The second trip was a hiking trip to fill a little time inbetween Guilin and the hostel I had booked in Yangshuo, and a little bit of an addition to my itinerary after a little arm twisting by Caro, a German girl from the hostel in Guilin. However before I begin my tales of Longji I'll give you the Conniepedia profile. The Longshen Rice Terraces (Chinese: 龙胜梯田, pinyin: Lóngshèng Tītián) also named Longji Rice ... read more

Obwo... read more

I know you all read the title of the blog and are thinking, "What the heck...?" All will be revealed, fear not! First off, though, allow me to apologize for the lapse in writing. While I did not get full-blown illness like Jeremy did, I too was dealing was vicious nausea and the lingering effects of my head-cold for the past few days. Second, let me assure everyone that we are in fact feeling much, much better, after basically two days of bed-rest. And third, we appreciate all the comments that it's time for Jeremy to get a haircut - this we know, however; seeing as though we are in ASIA and probably couldn't find a barber shop if we tried (nor would they know WHAT to do with that mop of curly hair), we will ... read more

On October 27th, we left yangshuo to see the rice terraces in Longji. The trip didn't go quite as originally planned but all things considered it was a success. The original plan was to take a bus to guilin, buy our train ticket from guilin to guangzhou for the next day, leave our big bags at the train station, take another bus to Heping, and another bus to ping'an (the biggest of 3 small towns in the rice terraces), and stay the night somewhere. The next day we would hike to Dazhai (another town) which is supposed to take 4-5 hours, then bus our way back to guilin with enough time to catch the train. I'd read that the overnight train from guilin to guangzhou left at 9:50 pm so I figured there was enough time ... read more

Day 420: Sunday 23rd August - Arriving in Longji Rice Terraces In my last post, I had just arrived in the town of Ping’ An 36 hours after commencing my journey from Lijiang. Needless to say on my arrival, I take the first reasonably priced accommodation. I can’t be bothered to look around. Thankfully this gives me my own room to get a good night’s sleep. On closer inspection, naturally after I’ve agreed to take the room, I find the bed is rock hard. It hasn’t got what the average person would describe as a mattress, it only being an inch thick. Tonight I’m going to have to grin and bear it, which shouldn’t be too hard in my present weary state but I’m already making mental preparations to see the rice terraces and move on ... read more

Guilin has been an excuse for us to take fantastic side trips. Just when we thought it could not get any better, it does. We stayed in Guilin one night and hopped on a "bus" to Longji, which means Dragon's Backbone. The bus ride rivals any roller coaster ride at Cedar Point for sheer excitement. The roads are narrow and winding, the drivers all pass on curves and the rain the night before had caused some rock slides. 2 1/2 hours later we loaded our few belongings and hiked up the mountain to our lodge (it took us 4 hours). The whole point is to see the rice paddies at sunrise, but rain the night before created a cloudy morning. I didn't think I could take anymore pictures, but the sun came down, and the hike ... read more
