Let the regiment begin: 07:30 – 08:10 Breakfast 08:20 – 12:30 Class (two 2 hour sessions) 12:40 – 13:40 Lunch ~14:30 – XX:XX afternoon activities. The students that already have some back ground in Chinese are quick to say that it’s an easier language then English. I believe for them they came make that distinction having a decent grasp of it as a second language but for someone with no grasp its hard to imagine any language being easier than the one you already full comprehend. I will believe when it comes to grammar it certainly seems more concrete in its rules over English, but for someone just starting to learn that’s a future hurdle. The immediate difficulty is pronunciation and vocab retention. The latter of which I would say is a particular weakness for me, ... read more

With our morning schedule rearranged, we were all up early and catching taxis to the Hong Kong airport before 7:00am. I can’t speak about the other drivers but the one I was with must have felt like he was channeling moves from The Transporter because he was taking us through Hong Kong with breakneck speeds and tactical passing precision. Again the traffic on the highway wasn’t so busy so his maneuvers weren’t overly harrowing. At the airport, check-in went easily enough and besides making final call to board the plane no reasons for panic arose. Time in the air passed quickly and we were meeting Ming Ming and Molin from CLI shortly after touching down and effortlessly passing through customs. On route to CLI we passed through the outskirts of Guilin were a new ... read more

Geo: 25.2767, 110.295Flew in last night from Xi'an. After check-in we had a short walk and a couple of drinks in the vicinity of the hotel.According to our guide Tony, Guilin has a population of 700,000 that is planned to grow to 1.2M, in five years! The local farmers are being progressively asked to return their land to the Govt for the expansion. They get a condo in return and a job in tourism. In China all land is owned by the Govt. People "buy" property on a 70-year lease.Today we saw the Reed Flute Cave (exceptional), Guilin's signature Elephant Trunk Hill (disappointing), a park and a tea plantation visit (fascinating).A hoot at the nibbling fish, and a pretty walk along the river bank.... read more

Geo: 25.28, 110.28We made it! Just eight pieces of bamboo lashed together with a makeshift seat for two tied on top ... and a good young man with a very long pole. Now that is adventure.Mac bought me my garland of flowers and helped me on board and we were away for a leisurely float down the Yulong River. The scenery was spectacular. The little dams and waterfalls along the way provided a bit of variety and the stall holders floating in the middle of the river gave us a few chuckles. The most enterprising venture was the "photo booth" - these were floating in the middle of the river on the down side of the dam. Your raft is moored and you board a floating pontoon complete with computer screens, printers and laminators and you have ... read more

Geo: 25.273, 110.279Well I spoke just a couple of days too soon about the sunshine because this morning we woke to a sullen sky, winds and a heavy shower of rain. We met Wendy right on 9 in the lobby to the news that the bamboo rafting had been cancelled today due to "turbulence in the water". So a swap in our itinerary and we were off to the rice fields.Wendy had told us to dress for 16 C and water for the boat trip and of course in the rush of the morning it didn't occur to us to change for the new itinerary. Big mistake. We set off on our full day tour to the Longsheng Rice Terraces, which are about 100 km north of Guilin. The terraced fields are built along the slopes ... read more

Pour info, ils ont des "soft sleeper" ;p " We were asked frequently by people around the world on the difference of hard sleeper and soft sleeper on China trains. To explain things more clearly, we have taken and collected some interior pictures during the train travel time and would like to use them as examples. By referring the demonstration below the photos on this webpage, your misconception and confusion on types of Chinese train tickets will be disappeared. Well, let's begin! &l... read more

‘Someone’ decided it would be a good idea to go out for a few beers last night even though we knew we had to be up for 9am today. ‘Someone’ then also thought it would be a good idea to stay out drinking until 3am, resulting in two tired and slightly hungover Scots this morning. Thankfully we had the sense to pack the night before for a change, so we only really need to roll out of bed and get dressed. Apart from a slightly sore head, we’ve managed to fair pretty well considering, and are ready for our 10 hour bus journey across China into Guilin. It’s quite exciting but also quite daunting at the same time as we have absolutely no idea where we are going, and don’t speak the language. But hey, that’s ... read more

Geo: 24.7709, 110.487This coming weekend is Qingming Festival weekend, tomb sweeping or clean your grannies grave. The idea is that you return to your home village and clean the family graves and set off fire crackers to frighten off demon spirits. So the valley is filling up with families whose children are off school and who have come home for a long weekend. Our hotel is full of expats (American and French) who live in Shanghai or Beijing and are taking advantage of the holiday to do some sightseeing. The main tourist activity in the area is a mixture of cycling and rafting. The idea is you hire bicycles, cycle ten miles along the valley then get on a bamboo raft and drift down whilst a kind man with a lorry returns your bike to the start. ... read more
