The minivan hurtled along a dirt road, it's occupants cramped and eager to escape into the terraced hills above the narrow river gorge. A huge landslide marked the terminal point for vehicular travel and an opportunity to stretch the legs a little... Like almost every river in China, the Herping has not escaped from the enthusiastic reach of Chinese engineers. A weir across the flow provided an interesting slide for my hot, sweating body to relieve itself. The track passed by a number of powerful waterfalls chundering down the valley walls along the way. Soon, under Tommy's guidance, we found ourselves scrambling up a forested slope towards the rice paddy fields above. Somewhere above, logs could be heard tumbling down the hill from the axe of workers. A machine could be heard clearing the hillside too; ... read more

After several weeks skirting the summer furnace that is the East of China we finally had to face the fact that when you descend from the mountains July in China is extremely hot and more importantly humid. From here to Hong Kong, where good air-conditioning abounds, we have felt and I have looked like the traditional Chinese dish of steamed dumplings - slimy and very difficult to pick up with chopsticks. The city of Guilin (pronounced gwaylin) in the North East of Guanxi provence, about a days drive North West from Hong Kong, was one of the first tourist destinations for the Chinese in China (the other being the city of Huangzhou near Shanghai), and remains one of the largest and most important. The reason is that the outskirts of the city and the whole of ... read more

Two tandems ply along a rice paddy path, splashing mud and water, and carving a line in the saturated “path” beneath them. Bang! The front wheel hits and the bike bounces through a rocky patch before plunging into knee deep water across the trail… Heavy rain over the last week has seen rivers rise and flow through rice paddies and becoming impassable at the normal crossing points. Tomorrow a large group will be arriving to climb at Twin Gate climbing area, one of the crags left isolated by the flooding. Today, four keen souls have been sent out on a scouting expedition to find a way of getting the 12 corporate CEO’s across the swollen Dragon River… For over an hour, the two bikes raced head to head along the river, jostling and competing as climbers ... read more

I said goodbye to Hong Kong and headed back into mainland China. My luck continues as I meet two sisters from Missouri (one of which is ending a 6 month journey around the world.....in fact, she is doing the exact opposite route i am taking). Together we take the turbo jet to Shenzen (china) and then board a flight to Guilin. While my original plan was to go to Yangshuo, I alter it to stay in Guilin one night so I can see the famous Caves and then catch a boat down the Lijiang river to Yangshuo. Unfortunately, we also meet three JAPS from NYC who accompany us in Guilin to the caves. I put up with them for a day while enjoying Guilin (caves, bamboo boat ride, hiking, etc.). The next day, we leave Guilin ... read more

Hi guys.. This has become much more easier to update with fast internet here in China. Had the most fantastic day today in this beautiful town called Yangshou. Its a backpackers favourite and yes, it is quite touristy but it is gorgeous. We went for a bike ride this morning for 4 hours through the countryside, met some locals and saw ride paddies, peanut trees and then went to this place called Moon hill which was basically a bit mountain climb which nearly killed me.. but it was worth the climb in the end as the view was amazing over the countryside when we got to the top... followed of course by about 5 chinese ladies trying to sell us water, they do this climb twice a day just to sell a bottle of water for ... read more

The Area: Towers of limestone rise through a hanging mist in a mythic setting. Rice fields with workers and buffalo set the scene between these giant towers, studded with small villages . Everything is green and lush, with a very tropical feel. The rock itself is solid and has a range of interesting features, making for a good variation of climbing. Combine this with good food, cheap living in a laid-back town and a group of good people to hang out with, and you have all the ingredients for a good time! The Challenges: Melting begins as soon as you start moving... sweat doesn't drip here, it flows, almost as fast as you can possibly drink! Keeping hydrated here is key, or you can lose much weight (and energy) through sweating. Communication poses another interesting challenge; ... read more

Got a plane from Xian and flew to Guilin, before being transferred by bus to Youngshou. We met up with another Gecko's tour, who had seen a little more of the north of the country and Shanghai. Were in Younshou from 3 April, until the 5th. As you can see Youngshou is beautiful and rural. Exactly as you would imagine China to be. The rock formations were fantastic. If I were to return to China I would definetly go here again. Popular to tourists for its rock climbing.... read more

Flying into Guilin was quite a sight. The mountains were beautiful and it seemed it was the China we had been waiting for. When you imagine China, there are always the thoughts of the gorgeous mountains, rivers, mist, and boats made of bamboo. You imagine something like right out of the art of a traditional Chinese scroll. Well, Guilin is exactly that. You are literally surrounded by mountains for as far as you can see. Our first night we were able to take an optional trip to see a demonstration of Cormorant fishing. These birds have been used for fishing for hundreds of years. Their lifespan can last 25-30 years, and they usually work for the same family their entire lives. Stings are tied around the bird’s necks and they are then tied to the boat. ... read more
