Well, despite all my reservations my dodgy 'just give us your money and we'll sort it' china visa turned out to be OK - I just can't believe it was so easy to get! I crossed the boarder from Hong Kong to Shenzen where alas immigration stamped my kosher visa with a nice dodgy entrance stamp, so now each time I check in to a new hostel we have to have the 'where did you enter china' conversation! Ahh well, at least it's improving my chinese vocab! I'm in a place called Suzhou at the mo.. it's cold, raining lots and has been for the last two days... in fact today was the first day my fleece moved from the bottom of my rucksack since I left NZ, a v sad day indeed :0( If it ... read more

Nice to get back to dry warm weather in Guilin, after the rain of Shanghai. Only had one day in Guilin, so not much to say about it and I'll let the photographs tell the story instead. Guilin is known for its scenic location amongst a host of gnarled, 200m high rocky hills on the Li River. Spent the day wandering through the parks, and trying to figure out the strange names put on the limestone hill formations. The most notable one in the town is Elephant Trunk Hill (said to be the body of a sick imperial baggage elephant who was cared for by the locals and turned to stone rather than rejoin the emperor's army). Climbed some of the limestone peaks, spend time in Seven Star Park which had a zoo, where you could ... read more

Just when you think things couldn't get lamer I go and put a link for my pictures : (sorry, but it takes forever to resize all my pics then upload them one by one onto travelblog, and i bet there's an easier way, but this is it for me, and I'm aware that this is an embarrassingly long run-on sentence) Anyways, click below for pictures from our May holiday adventures (and i promise you, there were adventures) SouthwestChinaPics... read more

This was our last day in Yangshuo before we got our nightmare bus journey to Hong Kong. We went and had some much needed retail therapy then had a lovely stroll around the town and down by the river with Dan. Then went to our final Kung Fu training! Went to get our bus and poor Georgie was sure we were going to miss it cause we were waiting at the travel agents. Ended up taking a short cut - through the food market, which was completely disgusting, crabs, frogs, insects everywhere - in the lashing rain to the bus. Then found out it wasn't even going to Shenzhen. Georgie nearly had a heartattack but the bus wasn't too bad, we were delighted with the beds but when you HAVE to lie down for 10 hours ... read more

We decided to be active today and go rock climbing with Noah and Seb, who were leaving in a few days so they wanted to do some Yangshao touristy things. Yangshao has some of the best climbing in China, the mountains are amazing to look at - they kinda all have this rounded top that you don't really find in Europe. We met at our climbing instructor, Echo, cafe, and she gave us all our shoes - that you can't wear with socks or you might fall, and climbing gear etc. We got a little mini bus out of town and then were faced with this rock face...sure there we had been thinking that we would just go to a straight-ish wall with a couple of foot holds and hand holds sticking out....hmmm, apparently not! So ... read more

We got two flights, a taxi that basically refused to drop us to the bus station until we bullied him and then a bus to Yangshao. And then as it happened, we literally stood up to get off the bus and Dan sauntered up - he was just randomly checking to see if we had arrived! It was Kate’s last night in Yangshao so we went out to Bar 98, then Charlie, Dan, Seb, Noah, Irene and I moved onto this other bar where Charlie knew the manager and bargained him down to 5 quai a beer….it was supposed to be a karaoke bar but it seems the machine is always broken! Marketing mechanism! The next night we went out to Monkey Jane’s for a few where you and Charlie did a bit of singing with ... read more

Each is unique in it's own way since the landowner chose to set up his village in whatever way he wanted. img style="float:right; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3085/97/200/DSC_6088.jpg" border="0" alt=""We hired another tour guide and driver that took us to Lanzi Village. This village is walled and has a seven story tower. It's about 300 years old. We sauntered in and Lynn found a friendly old lady. She was about 80 years old. She rattled on about the town, the landlord, and the tower. "I can take you on a tour for 10 yuan," she told Lynn in Chinese. Lynn thoug... read more

We caught TWO taxis to the airport. We needed two because of all the luggage my travel partners brought. You know, SOME people don't go carry on. It was a 2.00 taxi, that means it cost 2 yuan per minute. We caught a 1.60 taxi. When we got out at the airport we discovered that their taxi didn't have a meter and he charged them 90 yuan for a 15 minute ride. We took a 4 hour boat ride on the Li river. Beautiful landscape all the way. Jade green mountains and thousands of tall and straight peaks surrounded us all the way. the food on the boat was really bad and they served large bottles of beer for free. However, they would not trade the beer for a soda or even water!!! We couldn't believe it! Viagem no Rio Li, de Guilin pra Yangshou.... read more

The picures will tell about these 2 sites in Guilin. Elephant Hill is a legendary site. The hill has a story and it does look like an elephante drinking from the river. Reed Flute Cave is an underground natural extravaganza. Interesting rock fornations, ponds. Ex-president Clinton once had dinner inside the cave. The only one to bring such an event!!!
