Yesterday, I went on a most amazing excursion to Gulang Yu, a small island off Xiamen. Big surprise, we all arrived sopping wet. Like Spongebob. I've expanded with all the wet--oooooo expansion is never good! LMAO! But if I were SpongeBob Squarepants, I would have to kill myself if I had to be wet like that all the time.....course, he IS a sponge, but it's no wonder he and Patrick are such FREAKS! LOL Ah, I digress...back to Gulang Yu, this is, by far, the most intriguing place I have ever visted, and I don't think words are gonna cut it and so I'm gonna let the photographs and the video do the 'splainin', capiche? Many thanks to Elise for shepherding us all over there, and being our translater, when we needed someone to speak or ... read more

The sun has made an appearance! Hallelujah! You can't see it, but trust me, I AM doing a happy dance! LOL Also, it helps that I just spent 45 minutes skyping with Aiden and Harley and have an update on with what they have been up to. I am lying on my bed, so happy to have internet here in the apartment now, and thinking about how it is so interesting that I have the temperature on my room air conditioning set to 25 degrees celsius and am feeling that this is cool. !!! Did you just fall over? Oh, sorry. LOL, Yes, this is me...what a shocker, eh? Yup, this feels cool. I actually sleep with it about 23 Celsius and stay under my quilt all night long feeling good. No, really! I can hardly ... read more

Ni hao. I have awoken very early this morning. Seems my body is not to be fooled. It knows that way back home, in the province of Manitoba, it is actually 9 in the evening, and why are you sleeping, dammit? LOL I am writing as I sit in my balconyish type alcove off my bedroom. It is a large window with an amazingly large ledge and I have it open to the early morning air. There are insects and birds singing. And, much to my amazement, a rooster crowed and crowed his morning greeting to me. I do believe that is the first time in my life I have ever been greeted in the morning by a rooster. For me it was a magical moment. As I gaze across at the 11 story apartment directly ... read more

The rain is steady this morning, and at times, absolutely pouring onto the streets. When I rose, very early this morning, after having crashed heavily and slept for 9 straight hours, one of the first sounds that greeted me was that of someone's car alarm! LOL There were several that blasted into the early morning. That and the rain, and me at my computer, trying to straighten out the mess the upload made of the pictures.....lol, oh well. What else have I got to do? I gotta say, I am so hungry, and there's not a pizza joint in sight, or even a McDonalds. OMG, I would even eat there. I was a bit afraid to go wandering in the dark last night, and so tired I opted for blogging and bed. And I may go ... read more

I made it to Xiamen, China today at about 10:00 a.m. local time. I am beat. I was met at the airport by Andy, one of the employees with Tianjiao, with a sign with my name on it, and a huge bouquet of the most beautiful and fragrant flowers! I am tonight, in a hotel called the Home Inn while my apartment is being prepared. I am so tired! I have slept in small fragments, here and there. I slept a bit on the long plane ride to Beijing and a bit on the short one to Xiamen. I stayed up since I got here, it is somewhere around 7ish in the evening, on Monday the 29th, and I see by the clock on my little notebook here it says it's 2:29 am back home . ... read more

We had a very serendipitous visit to this unique port in Southern China. Our good friends, John and Jeannie from Pebble Beach have their sailboat in Turkey and have been cruising the Turquoise Coast for a number of years. Now John is thinking of moving his boat to Asia and has been looking into the possibility of basing it in Xiamen. He asked us to check out the area from a sail boater’s point of view. John gave us his contact in Xiamen and after numerous emails, we arranged to spend the day with Hugh. Hugh Morrow is a mid-westerner from LeMars, Iowa who has made a name for himself in the sailing world. Three years ago he crewed aboard a 54’ Chinese junk across the Pacific Ocean to San Francisco—without an engine! This 15,000 mile ... read more

We arrived in Xiamen after an incredibly long 21 hour train ride. It seemed like we would never arrive. Once we did arrive, we were shocked by the giant WalMart and McDonalds just outside the train station. We had foolishly expected Xiamen to be a bit of smaller city of approximately 500,000 or so. Uhh... not so, we would guess the population to be closer to 2 million-ish. Gulang Yu is an island off of the coast of Xiamen; it took us about 10 minutes to get there by ferry. Thank goodness we had taken the initiative to get our previous hotel manager to write out the chinese address of this hotel on a piece of paper. This way we were able to show it around when asking for directions, as there was absolutely no way ... read more

... read more

A day is skipped when traveling to the Far East from the Far West, like from California to China. A redeye flight from Frisco International. Final destination is Xiamen, a small coastal city in the Fujian Province in the southeastern part of China. I have never been there. I have never been to China, period. Writing the word period at the end of a sentence may seem a tad bit redundant and moronic, but it's emphatic, and empathic. Emphasis and empathy are important in the written arts, almost as important as digression. Belaboration is also important as well. I just made that word up, belaboration. It doesn't exist in any dictionary of the English language. Making up words, in other words wordplay and words to that effect, is essential in a civilized and sophisticated society such ... read more
