And so we reach December. Time really is flying by, it's hard to believe I've already been in China for almost four months. As I said in my last update I had a week off a while back because of the students' mid-term exams. Hannah, one of the other ELAs from Hangzhou, came down to stay with Alison (another of the ELAs) in Xiamen for a few days so I used it as an excuse to get out and do some of the touristy stuff in Xiamen itself. We went to Gulang Yu, a small ex-colonial island which is only a five minute ferry ride from Xiamen. The island itself is beautiful. It's completely pedestrianised and full of old colonial style buildings. Unfortunately when we were there the weather wasn't spectacular, grey and drizzle, rather British ... read more

It was a really sunny day in Xiamen when we arrived on Saturday, we decided to get the ferry over to Gulangyu Island as we had the address of a hostel we thought we could stay in. We got what we thought was the passenger ferry across & I had checked with the lady in the ticket office that it went to Gulangyu & pointed to my map, she said it went to the location I was pointing to, (I should know by now not to trust what people say). The boat arrived at Gulangyu but on the wrong side of the Island so it was really hot, starting to go dark & we didn't have a street map. We trekked across the Island, (which has no cars or motorbikes on, just golf buggies & push ... read more

Arrived in Gulang Island on Saturday around 5pm but the ferry had taken us to the opposite side of the Island than we had expected and needed to be. Unfortunately there are no roads here just paths so no cars just the odd golf buggy, which made travelling to the other side of the Island interesting, luckily for us the island is only about 7km squared. We finally made it to the other ferry port but by then it had gone dark and although we found the road the hostel was on we could not find the hostel (China has no logic!). So eventually we decided to book into a hotel instead, not the best in the world but it was warm and it had a bed. Sunday consisted of trying to find the hostel in ... read more

Well we have arrived! Spent the last few days in Bangkok, did the sights in a day - well-ish anyway - we went to the temple of the reclining buddha and went to go into the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha - however, they wanted to charge us an extortionate entrance fee that would have fed us for 3 days, so we skipped that one! We are indeed a tight fisted pair! Spent the remaining two days shopping and swanning around! Oh it's back to the hard life! Then caught the flight of flights to Xiamen in China! Cost us a whole 35GBP - bargain or what? However, upon check in we did begin to question the true value - it took us nearly 2 hours of standing in a queue to ... read more

First off I'd like to apologise for not updating sooner. I realise that it's been a while since I last posted. I've been kept fairly busy with my daily routine and haven't really been doing anything exciting with my time. A few weeks ago my school celebrated it's 100th anniversary. It's the oldest school in the region and there were a number of events to celebrate. So I dragged myself out of bed early on Saturday (28th Oct) morning and went to watch the main celebrations. The day started with an hour and a half of speeches and at this point I was seriously regretting not staying in bed. After the speeches were over the celebrations really started. There were seriously impressive dance performances, song recitals and martial arts displays. All in all good fun. I ... read more

After a very comfortable flight we arrived safely in Xiamen and grabbed a bus to the harbour. The hostel we booked was actually located on Gulangyu Island, so we had to take a 5 minute ferry accross to it. The island is less than 2km squared with a population of about 20,000 so it wasn't too difficult to find the hostel. The island is very scenic, all the buildings including our hostel are old colonial buildings, many of which are state protected. Our first evening there we spent wandering through the small streets and lanes of the island. A very relaxing place, unlike anywhere else we have seen in China. The only vehicles allowed on the island's small streets are golf buggies, and there was no sign of any tour groups! After a quiet beer we ... read more

Hi all. Just to let you know that I had a great birthday last Friday. I went for a really good meal at a local vegetarian restaurant with some of the other ex-pat teachers and some locals I've become friends with. After the meal we all went to a small jazz bar which is fast becoming our local. The owners are friendly and play some great live music. All in all it was a great night. Thanks again to all of you who sent cards, texts or emails. It was great hearing from you. I'll update again soon.... read more

Today was another early start as I was due to go rafting just outside Xiamen, again with some of the other ex-pat teachers. There was quite a large group of us in the end, about twelve or so. We were about halfway there when the car in front of us stopped to do a u-turn in the middle of the road. We tried to overtake it by crossing over on to the other side of the road only to meet a truck coming the other way. Our driver tried to weave the minibus through the gap but ended up hitting the car in front, raking along its side and taking its front bumper off. Which all sounds far more dramatic than it actually was. No-one was hurt but we were forced to wait by the side ... read more

Today I went for a hike in the mountains with a few of the other ex-pat English (and German) teachers. The mountains are located just behind my school although the route we took was on the other side, closer to the exhibition centre. There were quite a lot of people on the mountain as it’s a national holiday; apparently it’s usually pretty deserted. The scenery was lush and green but unfortunately the reservoir had been partially drained for some construction work, which spoilt the view a little. When we reached our highest point we were rewarded with some quite impressive views (we couldn’t actually go to the summit as it’s a military base - not really surprising as it’s the highest terrain near Taiwan). It was just possible to make out the Taiwanese island of Jinmen ... read more

As of tomorrow I'm officially on holiday for National Day and don't have to go back to work till the 9th of October. The current plan is to do the touristy stuff here in Xiamen and other stuff in Fujian province like visiting Quanzhou further up the coast and the minority villages in the south-west. I'm also planning to do a bit of white-water rafting. Should all be good fun. Since I'll be quite busy (and not at work) I might not update till I get back on the 9th but by then I should have some cool photos and stories to upload. Hope everyone's good. Keep emailing me.... read more
