It was a very interesting day. After breakfast we took a cab to the Anhui Museum. The Anhui Museum is one of the first museums in China, according to the signs at the museum. It was rather interesting and featured a locally born artist, Pan Yuliang. I liked her painting of scenes but the portraits did not connect with me. The museum is all the way across the old town of Hefei. We started to walk back. Of course I took some breaks but pretty well kept up with Kate and Lizzie. After two hours of hot, humid walking we could see the Holiday Inn Hotel. We went into a Starbucks and it was beautifully air-conditioned. I asked Kate to get me an American coffee. She asked “What Size?” I said large, because I was staying ... read more

The ancient town of San He. http://www.china.org.cn/travel/2013-05/01/content_28704165_4.htm It was an interesting day. The driver picked us up about 9 AM and drove to San He. It was about 50 K. After we got there we walked for a little bit over an hour. It was at least 100 degrees F and humidity of 90 – 95%. It was a beautiful old city but the heat and humidity damn near killed me. I sat down next to the creek and Kate and Lizzie went exploring. They came back about a half hour latter to find me par-boiled. Kate suggested an air-conditioned coffee shop which was about 30 yards across the street. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. After about 45 minutes Kate got bored and went exploring while Lizzie and I talked. A wonderful treasure ... read more

Visit the orphanage. What a wonderful day. We are so blessed that Lizzie is part of our family. They have a new orphanage and senior building which we visited first. The new orphanage only had about 30 children. Most of the children were handicapped. In 2001 there were 100 to 200 children. We then went to the old orphanage and were meet by a couple of Lizzie's former caregivers and the daughter of one of the caregivers. The old caregivers described Lizzie as “The beautiful quiet baby”. Lizzie asked how many babies were in each room and was a bit shocked when they said 12 to 14. They are using part of the old orphanage for senior housing.... read more

At the end of September, after saying goodbye to my parents in Bishkek, I flew back to Beijing to see my precious girlfriend, Becky. It felt so good and warm to get back together. We had been apart since I left Urumuqi in July. Becky was still working when I got to Beijing but she managed to meet me up for lunch several times in the area with all the foreign embassies (where I was applying for an Uzbek and Iranian visa) and we started dating again on rooftops and terraces, enjoying European cuisine, croissants and macaroons! It felt amazing to enjoy life together again. Beijing felt extremely romantic! We left the capital city a couple of days before October 1st (the beginning of the National Holiday) and we got to Anhui Province earlier than all ... read more

As predicted, Fall is turning out to be a significant season for travel in this chapter book. Last week was Annie's last week in Hangzhou. On Tuesday, she packed up and moved North for the winter (dummy!) to Tianjin -- not far from Beijing. So, to send her off on a nice farewell, we headed off on a fantastic retreat to nearby Huangshan - Yellow Mountain. Not entirely surprisingly, Huangshan is like any typical mountain town in a Western country. There are small shops and restaurants, cable cars and bus shuttles to the hiking areas, and little bed-n-breakfast style hotels dotting the landscape. The mountain itself is incredibly majestic, and its name is not ironic... the rock is extremely yellow, especially in the morning light. I butted out of work a few hours early on Tuesday ... read more

CHINA: FACES OF ANHUI. I lost a tooth in Shanghai...bit on a peppercorn in a duck-laced caesar salad...affecting my smile for the rest of the trip...smiling for photos with my mouth shut! Waited for a train...heavy packs...zillions of Chinese also waiting. Then one seat became vacant...walked towards it to try to secure the seat for Denise...the guy next to it smiling broadly to me...beckoning me forward. He had no teeth...no...he maybe had two...made me feel quite at home smiling to each other...both with our toothless grins! If there were no other people around I may have asked to take his photo...face full of character...a crowded railway station...not appropriate! But on Yellow Mountain, in a lonely locale in Anhui or an ancient village..."May I take your photo please?" The incomparable Teng Ge singing "Heaven"...the song I sing ... read more

Going to Yellow Mountain...my perfect destination for Christmas...the atypical mountain in Chinese paintings...with trees growing out of rocks...the holiest of China's holy mountains...Huangshan. The word is Winter is a shocking time to visit...just fog...nothing to see...I'll take that as encouragement. When on a "David Hoo Tour...Your Travel Experts with Minimal Experience but Maximum Optimism"...Winter...few other tourists...no better time. I felt like I was Mulan this weekend. Not the Mulan at the very end of the classic Disney movie where she saves all of China, but the Mulan at the beginning of the movie when she is struggling to make her way up a mountain. That was me. This weekend, a group of seven of us (six from our program plus someone’s friend who is studying abroad in Thailand) decided to go backpacking. Everything about this trip was so out of the ordinary for me. Unlike most trips where I have them all planned out at least a week ahead of time, we tried something new and bought a one way train ticket to Huangshan (translates to "Yellow Mountain") two days in advance. Thea, the girl that planned the hike, took her friend from home ... read more

New photos on: http://s251.photobucket.com/albums/gg311/draftwrite/ …..Australia has competition for its collection of 'Big' attractions, those excuses for a road trip that rarely seem worthwhile if that's the only reason you've gone to visit an area. The Big Banana, The Big Lobster, The Big Koala, The Big Orange etc. China now has the Big Piano, though it's not called that. A sizeable building, like a grand piano with the lid open, a huge glass violin at the front accommodating the staircase. I'd seen photos on the internet & checked to find it's relatively nearby, in Anhui province. So I'm sucked in to making a trip, knowing the coal mining city of Huainan is not likely to be high on the list of desirable destinations..... …..via Jiangsu's capital, Nanjing & the Anhui capit... read more
