One of the highlights of my trip Angkor Wat is the foremost and most visited center of attraction in Cambodia. It is the largest religious monument in the world and the World Heritage Site of UNESCO. Angkor Wat is now a significant national symbol of Cambodia. Angkor Wat was originally created as a temple of Hindu, and it is still stuffed with stone reliefs and statues of Hanuman, Shiva, Ganesh, and the Apsaras. After Khmer Empire disintegrated, Angkor Wat was then changed into a Buddhist temple. Over the centuries, the temple has still been in use, and there are still some observations and ceremonies for both the Hindus and Buddhists. King Suryavarman passed the order for the Angkor Wat temple to be constructed, and he made it his official capital city and temple. Its location was ... read more

After our extremely uncomfortable but less hair raising 4 hour taxi ride in a 5 seater car with 8 people (including baby) we arrived in Koh Kong. Our first impression of it was the that it was a bit of a dive. We hadn't planned on staying here but figured we wouldn't have enough time to hitchhike to Sihanoukville so went out to explore. We did find some delicious street food - BBQ sticky pork, pickled vegetables, soup and rice (standard) all for £1 which perked up our spirits. After our feast we then got a tuk tuk to take us to the Mangrove Forest. This place was definitely worth the visit. It was eerily quiet aside from the popping of air bubbles through the marsh. With hundreds of thousands of crabs all shapes and sizes ... read more

Friday 4th December 2015 Today we leave Phnom Penh and head south to the beach town of Sihanoukville. This journey started at 9am and we were crammed into a mini bus which took 4 hours to travel 100 miles to the beach. The journey was uneventful and we arrived at our destination for approx 1pm. We then walked to our new accommodation for a one night stay, the Reaksmey Meanrith costing us $23 per night. The hotel is away from the beach and the bar street which is what we wanted as apparently the bars can get quite rowdy and we fancied a little relaxation. That being said, we headed straight to the bar street to try and buy a ferry ticket that would take us to the island of Koh Rong the following day. We ... read more

Leaving Koh Chang, now being so close to the Cambodian border, I figured it was time for a quick visa run. And so it was back to Trat for a minibus transfer to the Hat Lek-Cham Yeam border in the Southeastern-most part of Thailand along the Gulf. Based on my past experiences with various scams at Cambodian borders such as Aranyapathet-Poi Pet, I think I emerged relatively unscathed this time, hurt only by what I think probably was just a slightly overpriced (USD4) moto ride from the border to the nearest town of Koh Kong, some 10 km away. Koh Kong, with its relatively untouched and government-controlled beaches, mangroves and waterfalls, is part of a larger designated national park, but is otherwise (yet another) rather sleepy riverside town. It had in fact been on my to-go ... read more

To cross the Cambodian border you just rock up and buy your visa then go through, simple you would think but during the process there are a couple of hurdles. These are mainly scams; on the scam count I believe I managed to get through with a credible score of 2/4. Scam 1 - The health test Now I fell for this scam but I was slightly dubious about it whilst it was going on. As I crossed the border I was ushered to the side and informed that I needed to have a quick medical and it would cost me 20baht (40p). So as scams go I wasn't too badly ripped off. And actually 40p for a medical examination is quite reasonable, although it did just consist of zigzagging a laser pen down my body ... read more

So after spending my last few days with Chloe on Koh Chang, Thailand - the details of which I'm not going to bore you with as apart from one great day snorkelling the rest of the time was spent hiding from the pouring rain. Although hang on, our last night together we decided to splurge with the last of our Baht and we went to Monkeys for dinner, good decision! We had THE best meal, starting with cocktails followed my mains of chicken breast served on creamy mash with delightful veggies, inc asparagus that was sauteed' to perfection! Anyway enough of my obsession with food.....so on wed Chloe and I caught the ferry back to the mainland and that is where we parted ways after 44 days of travelling together. Although it was sad to see ... read more

For the days around my twenty third birthday we decided to head further west from Chi Phat to the Koh Kong Conservation Corridor that stetches along the Thai border. We arrived in the capital of the area, Krong Koh Kong, expecting what Lonely Planet dubbed as 'a seedy border town' but found it to be a rather nice place. We had planned to go to a nearby island for my birthday but decided that it might be a little too deserted for any birthday celebrations. So we planned to stay and enjoy the waterfalls, mangrove forests and beaches nearby. The town had a scenic riverside/sea setting with a promenade lined with food stalls from where you could see across the long bridge to Thailand. We found Otto's guesthouse where 'you pay the least but sweat the ... read more

Me Wies and Bart crossed the border at Hat lek and as soon as our mini buss dropped us off people were grabbing our bags trying to take them for an big big price across the border. Unfortunatly for most Asains we all have the lonely planet which allows us all to have a chance if we're smart enough to know when we are being ripped off. So the best thing to do is go in hiding for 20 minutes, eat some food then go back and find a nice little old man who will do you a good deal. We had to fill out health forms and have photos taken for the visa but some guy did it all, then suddenly wanted a tip for helping us, although it's his job and he works there, ... read more

I want to say that I LOVE CAMBODIA and I'm really upset that I didn't have the opportunity to stay there longer. I live in the neighborhood, so a trip back is a must. Traveling to the Thailand/ Cambodia border was a trip. On the Thai side, there are mean-faced serious military men holding AK-47's and the process to exit the country was fairly orderly and uncomplicated. However, by the time you cross to the Cambodian side, anarchy awaits. There are children everywhere trying to hustle you and make a quick buck and all these men waiting in front of immigration office persistently insisting that you need their help. They want to fill out your paperwork for you and take you to a hotel, but claim there is no charge for their service. Unlike Thailand, there ... read more
