I had planned a brief stay in one of Cambodia's five star resorts on the coast, thinking I might need a bit of R&R after Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. It seemed a bad omen when I boarded the bus in Phnom Penh and realised that my seat was home to my luggage as well as my butt. The bus itself was packed, as people headed home for the Pchum Ben festivities. Pchum Ben is a fifteen day religious festival which culminates in a national celebration, and this year it's 22-24 September. Cambodians return to their province for the holidays to pay their respects to seven generations of ancestors, visiting temples, and making food offerings. There I was squished into the seat my legs all at odd angles, trying not to impinge too much on the ... read more

My second stop in Sihanoukville stole just a little bit of my heart. There is just something about that sleepy little town that captured my heart. There are small little shops everywhere, happy people, and very angry street children. Even my hostel was full of wonderful people. One of the hardest things about traveling on my own has been constantly having to make friends. However, in Sihanoukville it just seemed to happen. I feel into a group of about 10 other travelers. I only meant to stay one day in Sihanoukville, and ended up spending five. There is just something so comforting of being with people who you just seem to click with. Over our five days we did absolutely nothing. The highlight was me getting my Vietnam visa. Though I didn't do anything that exciting ... read more

it was an early ish start for us on Saturday as the mini bus was leaving at 7.30am, although I was hopping off as i have time. I had set my alarm so we were up in time but when we got up to have showers etc there was no water. Becky had already flagged this up to the hotel people and they were working on the situation. It finally got sorted and everyone got clean and packed and the bus left about 7.45am. I hugged and waved goodbye to everyone and waited for my minivan to arrive, which it did just after 8am There were already 3 people from the UK and 4 people from the states/Canada on the bus. We then drive round the town picking up more people until the van was full ... read more

Another long school holidays week-end....another week-end on the road! This time, we are heading on the road all the way to Cambodia... As you are aware, Thailand is under a military...you call it the way you want. No real signs of it in Bangkok beside the curfew which has now been relaxed from midnight to 4am. We first took the bus from Bangkok to Trat at 3.30pm just after school. Busy bus for 5 hours and half ride to Trat. We were stopped only twice by military check-points, all went nicely and smoothly. In Trat, we jumped in the back of an open taxi for the 50km south in the direction of the Cambodian border....direction, two nights at the Centara Trat Baan Talay resort. The place is truly in the middle of nowhere....if you stay here...you ... read more

Hi again, it's been just over another week and we've visited three more places (well two new places) as we continue our time here in Cambodia; Kratie and Kampong Cham as well as revisiting Phnom Penh, as we journey down to the coast for our last week. After an extremely long and hot bus journey to the small riverside town of Kratie, we arrived early evening to the Silver Dolphin guest house, right on the riverside run by a very friendly family and their very cute bubbly 1 year old boy :)) unfortunately they had no AC so we had to settle for one standing fan, it sounds like a trivial thing but the weather here is now extremely hot and stuffy and we're only choosing to book rooms which have AC as it can get ... read more

Hi everyone, This blog is going to be a bit different to other blogs i have done. You will see what i mean as you keep reading… Royal Palace in Penonh Penh- The day before yesterday we visited the royal palace. The gate opened at 2:00pm and thats when we got our tickets to get in. I had to put a sarong to cover my knees and it was so hot so it wasn't enjoyable. When we got through the gates we wondered around the temple it was a bit hard to enjoy because it was so hot. We went in to this main room of the temple an there was a gold buddha in there covered in 2,000 or 200 kilos of diamonds. It was pretty cool seeing this display. We decide to leave the ... read more

As you can imagine we were both relieved when it was morning and light outside. The first thing we did was go for a swim in the sea to try and feel a bit cleaner. The beach was really really nice early in the morning, it was so quiet everywhere and hardly anyone around. I was surprised how warm the sea was, at least 30 degrees! Our main priority was to find somewhere else to stay as soon as possible. After walking down the street we asked in a place a few metres off the beach which was like a little village of bamboo huts. They had a room free and it was 100 times better than the night before so we moved our things over. The bamboo hut was very clever, everything from the lamp, ... read more

After a good sleep, we felt a lot better and were looking forward to a relaxing day by the beach. Matt went out in the morning and bought some fruit and coffee which we had on the balcony bit of our bamboo hut. We spent the rest of the day relaxing by the beach, in the morning in a quiet area, then the afternoon by the restaurants on the beach which all have sun beds and comfy seats where it was more shady. It was so nice to just be by the sea and spend a day relaxing. We booked our bus ticket for the next night, a 'hotel bus' to Siem Reap. For our last night in Sihanoukville we went out for dinner, and had a few drinks, before spending the rest of the evening ... read more

We woke up early again and went on a expedition to try and find another lonely planet recommendation by the river to have breakfast before getting the bus at half 11. After walking around for an hour and a half, the place didn't seem to exist and we were running out of time, so just got a coffee and went to check out. We were dropped off at the bus station in the central Phnom Penh, it was so busy everywhere, it was a national holiday, Women's Day, so a lot of locals were going to sihanoukville for the weekend. We had heard a lot about buses in Cambodia, like how they cram as many people as possible in each one even if the seat doesn't exist but the bus we got on was one of ... read more
