December 18th, 2004 Dear friends, I had hoped that my recent experience travelling India would have prepared me somehow for the culture shock inherent in switching continents. But it has only helped me to find out that, besides being completely different from Europe, the feeling of the DRC has nothing in common with the Indian subcontinent. We arrived late yesterday night at N'Djili International Airport of Kinshasa, after a pleasant flight with Air France - they certainly know how to make their passengers feel at home. We were supposed to leave tonight on the MSF charter flight from Lignes Aeriennes Congolaises (a carrier banned from flying to the EU, by the way) carrying medical supplies directly to the airstrip outside Bunia. Some of our luggage had gotten 'lost' and was suddenly 'found' after I left a ... read more

I am now in Marrakesh. I am not spending long here because I've got my Mauritanian Visa. The Visa is for one month from the day that it is issued. So, I need to make for the border. The Visa was issued yesterday. I was at the consulate at 8.30am. They said to come back at 3pm. I did, but they kept everyone waiting outside the Consulate for 1.5 hours! After getting the visa I did a bit of shopping including buying a new pair of Chino's for 100 Dirhams, from a shop which had everything for a 100 Dh offer on. I needed to replace my only pair of trousers as I had noticed they were developing an embarrassing hole! This morning I caught the 9.30 train from the Casa Voyageurs Station, which is about ... read more

Since leaving Cape Town I've been heading east along the Garden Route via the BazBus - a hop-on hop-off bus service that picks you up and drops you off at whatever hostel you're staying in at the next town. I think that back home in England the BazBus is pushed pretty hard by places like STA as the only safe way to travel across South Africa. Having travelled for a little while now in South Africa, I think that the security aspects of this country are slightly overstated. Obviously, there are areas which are dangerous and you shouldn't head to after dark - just like in any other city across the world, but for the majority of places I've felt pretty secure and safe. With hindsight, I'd have to say that the best way to explore ... read more

We eventually made it to Kidira last Friday - 10th December and what a contrast the border crossing was - we had to hunt out all the officials & one of them even let us film him stamping the vehicle carnet! But, it all turned out to be too good to to be true...we arrived in Kayes & promptly got stopped by the Police who were not nice at all...they were very upset with the dodgy insurance we'd bought at Rosso in Senegal. After 1 1/2 hours of debate, we finally acknowledged that our Senegal insurance for the whole of West Africa was worthless & paid out another 30 pounds for a months worth of insurance for Mali - this should hopefully cover us for Burkino Faso & Ghana as well though! Highlight of the day ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the second of six posts I'll make about a trip to the Canary Islands, Morocco and Madeira in 2004 that I did with my parents and my uncle Anders. The last post covered my time on Lanzarote and this one covers my time in Morocco. The second landfall on our Atlantic Cruise was in beautiful Agadir on the Moroccan coast. It was a fairly short landfall so we were determined to make our time here count. We were not alone in that thought and you could really tell that the landfalls of cruise ships have an impact on the local community. It reflected in the general mentality here with a plethora of taxi drivers waiting by the docks to take us tourists to their favorite vendors and select photo hot ... read more

December, 15th, 2004 Dear friends, after months of preparations, jumping through bureaucratic hoops and countless assessments, we received final approval from the Congolese high commissioner and collected our passports at the embassy in the Hague. We went straight back to the headquarters of Médecins Sans Frontières (Artsen zonder Grenzen / Doctors Without Borders, MSF) in good old Amsterdam. Our local contact, the Belgian virologist Hubert Staersmede immediately got on the phone to the MSF station in Bunia, the capital of the Ituri Province in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Chief Medical Officer Dr. Mumbasa was relieved to hear everything was going to be in order after all, and suggested we bring a turkey stuffed... read more

Got up early this morning to get a Taxi to the Mauritanian Embassy in Rabat. Only to find a note pinned to the wall saying that they don't issue Visas! Serves me right for believing the Lonely Planet and not checking! The note said that Visa's are issued at 382 Route d'El Jadeda, Bequsejour, Casablanca. As a result I'm now in Casa. I'll be at the Consulate in Casa first thing in the morning! I visited the Hassan II Mosque this afternoon in Casa. It is the world's 3rd largest religious building. It can hold over 20,000 people and another 80,000 in the surrounding courtyards. Casablanca is a very Cosmopolitan City - it hardly feels like I am in Africa. Wide Boulevards, designer sunglasses, and not many veiled women. It could be any port city in ... read more

Haven't done a lot today. I've moved from Meknes to Rabat the capital of Morocco. Rabat looks like a very modern city and in many ways it is, but in fact it has a history of 2,500 years. Last nights hotel was a bit of a splurge - I spent 340 Dirhams - that's about 21 Pounds sterling. I went from the sublime to the ridiculous. One night in a 40 Dirham hovel, the next in a 340 Dirham hotel! But the more expensive hotel not only had decent sanitation but also a swimming pool! There was also a big banner welcoming some UN Conference on the Environment and the use of scarce water resources in poor countries, hung across the entrance. I thought the theme of the conference rather ironic considering they had booked a ... read more

Today I visited the Roman remains of the City of Volubus which is 33 km from Meknes. I switched hotels from the cheap hotel to a more expensive hotel, this morning. The room in last nights hotel was only just big enough for the bed. It was probably 8 foot by 7, it had a sink but no electric sockets. The hotel had one shared squat toilet and one shared shower for the whole hotel. After changing hotels I made full use of the facilities - including using their bathroom sink to wash my clothes. At about 11am I walked from the new hotel to the Grande Taxi rank. Basically the Grande Taxi's are shared Taxi's that go from point to point. They all seem to be battered old Mercs. The driver waits till the car ... read more

I am now in Meknes, it's much less hassle here. I almost miss the aggressive touts! On the bus here, a young man practised his English by talking to me - which passed the time. He said he was studying English at college. When I arrived I looked round 4 different Hotels in the Medina - all of them pretty dire. I finally took one for 40 Dirhams, it looked the nicest because it had at least been decorated recently. Although it has a very basic communal shower, and smelly communal squat toilets. I walked around Meknes this afternoon, some of the photos are reproduced here.... read more
