Class is officialy finished as of 10:00 am today. We had our big test, then we all went to the cafe to have tea and chocolate croissants to celebrate. This week has been both happy and sad: happy because its been the best week yet for dinner parties, discotheques and dining out; sad because most of my Asdeequa (friends m.) and Sadequaat (friends f.) are leaving and not coming back next semester. I can see already that I'm bound to meet some of the most interesting, intelligent and eccentric people in the world here, but that I'm also going to have to get used to seeing them come and go more often than I would otherwise wish. I've been an utter shopaholic lately. My attempts to buy christmas presents, furnish my room and buy a wardrobe ... read more

Hey y'all, I was a former Peace Corps volunteer in Senegal from 2001-2003. My former teacher is now a private tutor and lives in Dakar. She speaks French, Wolof, and Pulaar and can tutor in all three of these languages. She's taught Wolof at University of Ohio and is fluent in English. If you're interested, please contact me and I will send you her email address. I can also send you emails of other Peace Corps volunteers who knew her and studied with her. We will all tell you that she's not only an amazing teacher, but hilarious, warm, and a very nice person. Natasha ... read more

Left Tangier this morning - used one of the touts to get to the bus station quickly. I could have found it myself but the touts have some uses! I arrived in Tetuan in blazing Sun, after a 1 hour journey. I was latched onto by another tout, who wouldn't take no for an answer. I was maybe a bit soft and allowed him to follow me around. Maybe he thought he was giving me a tour I hadn't asked for. In fact I had made it very clear that I didn't want anything from him. No hotels, taxi's, tours etc. Obviously he knew I had just arrived, as I'd just got off the bus! Anyway after about half an hour, I finally told him to go, and he asked for a tip, which I refused ... read more

Spent today travelling from Malaga to Tangier in Morocco. The bus to Algecirus took longer than I expected - I should know better than to believe the estimates in the Lonely Planet! It took about 3 hours, travelling all along the coast stopping at all the resorts on the way - Torrelominos, Marbela etc. At the port of Algecirus, I caught the fast ferry, which is advertised as taking 1 hour, but in fact took 1 and a half hours. Somehow, I managed to get on the ferry and disembark without getting my passport stamped. So, the Moroccan border guard sent me back on the boat to get my passport stamped. It wasn't really a problem - it only delayed me leaving the ship by 10 minutes. The ferry staff were very helpful. This keyboard is ... read more

We'd heard and read of nightmare stories about the border crossing at Rosso into Senegal, so it was with some degree of trepidation that we set off on Friday morning from Noaukchott! We were in two minds as to whether to drive further down the coast and cross at Maka Diama, but we'd read reports that it was getting as bad, if not worse than Rosso, so we stuck to our original plan. As soon as we arrived at the entrance to the compound on the Mauritanian side we were surrounded by hustlers & policeman - all anxious to help us with the necessary paperwork. We'd heard that even the police were corrupt and would try it on if they could - and they promptly did, wanting to charge us 10,000 UM for the ferry ticket, ... read more

Tired, hungry and feeling very much like two dirty beach bums we spent some time trying to find a budget hotel. We struck gold & were given directions to La Auberge de la Dune, which we discovered was run by a former guide. After a blissfull shower & a wonderful night's sleep we set off to find the Mali Embassy. Having consulted the Lonely Planet we felt pretty confident of our directions and knocked on the door of what we thought was the Embassy. I have to say we were a little taken aback to be shown into a very formal reception room by the doorman and marvelled that there were no other tourists applying for visas! We were warmly greeted by whom we later presumed must have been the Mauritanian Ambassador himself who insisted on ... read more

Exhausted after our border crossing, and with sunset due to descend we asked a farmer if we could camp on his little strip of land by the side of the road. He cordially obliged and much interest was shown in the Landrover & the roof tent, and we were invited to join them for a dinner of rice, fish and peanuts as they huddled round hot charcoal burners to keep warm (amusing for us as we were still overheated from the hot day). We left bright and early and headed for St Louis where we found a great place to stay for a couple nights - Les Cafe des Arts. I loved St Louis - it was really easy to find places, as all its streets are basically on a grid system, like New York or ... read more

Anafora As our semester came to a close, the whole group headed up to the Delta region to spend a weekend at a Coptic Church retreat centre called Anafora. We were the only large group there, and really had the whole place to ourselves. Aside from the staff that work at the centre and the laborers working the fields (it is a working farm) we really had the run of the place. Feeling the need for some alone time, I arranged for a private room and couldn’t help but love the place for providing such simplicity while meeting every need. Due to it being our ‘farewell’ outing for the semester, we had to have a ‘processing’ session on how this would be impacting our lives etc. I don’t mean to bash these, but I had already ... read more

November 2004 saw me bidding an emotional farewell to friends and family and heading off my my post-graduate travels. The initial trip that I had mooted with my uni friends Steve and Chris had fallen through - I would now be meeting the Norfolk boys in Singapore for a month long blitz through South East Asia. In their absence, I had decided to forge my own path, which eased me into the traveling way via the English speaking South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, before heading up through South East Asia with Steve and Chris, and then culminating the trip in India and Nepal. So first up was South Africa, and I landed in Cape Town without any problems - although I was brought down to earth rudely before I even arrived at the hostel. Townships ... read more

Have at last found a cyber cafe with a decent connection - in Noukchott, the capital of Mauritania. We arrived in Mauritania nearly a week ago, after a fairly uneventful last few days in Morocco. Our French friend, Christophe, met up with his friends in Dahkla, where we camped for two nights before setting off for the border crossing into Mauritania. En route we made some new friends - a couple of German travellers - Dietmar & Cisco in a large old bus and a couple of guys from Finland in a Landrover Defender. We camped with them in the dunes 60km from the border - and joy of joys they had beer & whisky - our first alchohol since Spain! The border crossing was pretty uneventful - I don't know what I expected really - ... read more
