Some places are tourist honey pots for a good reason. The Dogon country is one of Mali's tourist honey pots. It deserves its status. The villages of the Dogon people are clustered around picture postcard scenery - a remote escarpment that was easy to defend from rivals. The Dogon people also have a unique culture. It's a must see destination best done by walking from village to village. This means you must be prepared to do without electricity, to use bucket showers and squat toilets, and sleep on the roofs of houses with only the stars and the moon for illumination. I've just come back from the Pays Dogon - it was brilliant! I booked with a tour company - a mistake. It's always better to book direct with the actual guides. You get the same ... read more

My journey begun not in Zambia, but in Canada for three intense weeks of preparation. One week in Vancouver for the Engineers Without Borders conference and two weeks in Toronto. During this time, I went through a mind expanding overseas development training course. Now, although I had already had taken courses in development studies in University, personally studied and taught development at the EWB Calgary chapter for 3 years, and went through a one week EWB course before my placement in India, this training took my level of understanding of development to a whole new level. I trained with 8 other phenomenally talented and passionate volunteers; 2 going to Haiti, 2 to Ghana, 1 to Cameroon, 1 to Lesotho, 1 undetermined, and myself to Zambia. We were equipped with an arsenal of tools and knowledge that ... read more

Ingredients for a good game walk: * A game reserve in the middle of nowhere, that no-one on the truck has visited (including both drivers) and it seems, almost no-one at all has visited recently (unmanned entry gates, overhanging branches on roads and a very overgrown campsite.) * A guide with an AK47 (or some such) and a nice green beret to offer some modicum of sartorial authority. * A gathering storm * A herd of elephants making their way along the lake-shore to the campsite, forcing us to spend the first 45 minutes walking along a dirt road * Poachers, firing an elephant gun, (or some such) nearby A herd of perplexed overlanders, standing around in the bush, unarmed and slightly tense, as the guide goes off to chase the poachers, and the first drops ... read more

Driving down to Port Louis, in the extended rush hour, normally until 9:30 am but when it rains, and because money is scarce for the majority of the population in Mauritius, car tyres are as bold as my Dad's head. So as to avoid the famous “aquaplaning” in Mauritius which actually looks like water skiing, instead of driving at the permitted speed limit in Mauritius on the dual carriage way : 90 KMS an hour Mauritian drivers have "grinded" to a 35 km, stop and go, for the 30 kilometre stretch from Floréal to Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius. It seems the sun will not be here for quite a few days still. The poor tourists who, since arriving in Mauritius, have only had rain for nearly 2 weeks, what a holiday for them - ... read more

Hi again, It's been a week since I've arrived and time has both flown by and gone really really slowly. I have adjusted more to the heat so do not sweat as profusely as I did in the first few days. I actually find it a little cool in the mornings and in the evenings! It also helps that I take about 3 showers a day! As for life here, I have had my little ups and downs. I have met many people here, both expats and locals, and all are extremely friendly and kind. Everyone has gone out of their way to show me around and take care of me - I must seem very clueless and/or helpless! The food here is very varied both in price and type - have had local food (samaki ... read more

Tuesday 15th February How sad didn’t this morning feel, this trip’s last full day? Harriet woke us up early as we had a meeting with our friend Mr Meela, the bee expert, today. We were to spend the morning with him and Harriet on a field trip to see how the Akie tribe was getting on with the beekeeping and animal husbandry project they were involved in. In the afternoon we were planning to go to the big ‘mnada’ or Maasai market in Kibaya which happens on the 1st and the 15th of every month. After breakfast we set out with Massud driving, our first stop being Mr Meela’s house from where we were to pick him up. He lives in Kibaya, not far from Harriet, in a neat, white washed house with a small shamba ... read more

Monday 14th February After a feverish night I swallowed some paracetamol and got up early. The morning sun was shining through the flimsy curtain, and there were African morning sounds coming from outside; chickens, dogs barking in the distance, askaris talking softly to each other. Harriet had left breakfast for us as she had gone briefly to her office, which is just walking distance from her house. We ate breakfast outside on the veranda, bacon, eggs and toast. Harriet’s houseboy Charles was in the kitchen cooking food for Dessie and the cats. We liked Charles immediately, he was a gentle person with a lovely smile. He absolutely adores the animals, and would miss Dessie I think more than anyone else when the family leave. The kittens had an eye infection and he would painstakingly put ointment ... read more
