Hello all!!! Hope all is well with you. Sorry for the delay (for those that are bothered?!) So after heading back to my cousins in Benalmadena, Spain after Morocco, i lived the life of luxury for a few days, eating plenty, drinking too much and having the use of things like washing machines????? I think it was a good decision though, got loads of admin bits sorted and Morocco will still be there another day!!! I flew back to Bristol on the Monday, then straight to Heathrow where i got my flight to Nairobi via J'Burg - absolutely ridiculous way to do it but its the only way my ticket worked?! I got to Nairobi at about 6pm, arranged my transfer to Marangu the next day and went to my hotel. Nairobi: Busy, heaving and contrasting ... read more

I Have just returned from Essaouira and this time decided to drive down from Stratford upon Avon,England. I have a Mitsubishi Delica 4x4 (Pajero with MPV body). Left Uk via Dover which cost £48.00 one way on the Ferry and drove south via Paris and spent the first night in Bayonne just north of the Spanish border - the next day drove through Spain - Burgos - Madrid - Granada - Malaga -Algeciras and stopped the night outside Algeciras . The third day I caught the Algeciras - Tanger ferry which cost 158 euros return . The cost of the tolls in France and Spain amounted to about 120euros in total. On arrival in Tanger it was the usual Customs and police fiasco / game but managed to clear the port within 1 hour ( which ... read more

Some of you are more familiar with the work I’m going to be doing here as compared to others, so I will try and catch everyone up to speed. For those of you who already know what I’m doing or aren’t that interested in my actual work, you can skip to the next journal entry describing my arrival in Zambia and my impressions from my first week here. I am working as an Engineers Without Borders volunteer partnered with a locally established non-governmental organisation (NGO) named International Development Enterprises (IDE) (there are a lot of acronyms in development, I apologise now for how much I’m going to overuse them). EWB always partners with organizations that are operated by local people because development is about building a countries ability to help themselves and reducing their dependency on ... read more

Wednesday 9th February We got up again fairly early; there just wasn’t time for any lie-ins on this holiday. I had decided that I had to get back to Emslies Travel as I was sure Shafiq was working there and I really wanted to meet him. I realized that we both had been at ISM at the same time in 1977-78, but I couldn’t remember him. I wanted yet again to thank him for starting our ISM alumni group web site which has given us so much pleasure this last year. The plan for this day was to go and see a snake park which was situated along the Arusha road, not too far from the Mount Meru Game Sanctuary where I had spent a lot of time in my youth. Harriet wanted to pop in ... read more

Hello again, I have finally arrived after only 5 days of traveling and is it ever hot here! I don't have a/c at my place so am quite hot, even with the fan on. Apart from the heat, it's been quite an adventure so far. Due to freezing rain, my plane from Calgary was delayed, thus causing me to miss all my connections to Dar. So, I was delayed by two days in Toronto - thank you again so much to my family, the Palis', for taking such great care of me! I was taken to the office on the afternoon of my first day here and met all the staff. I am now currently reading some information brochures on my organization and trying to figure out my responsibilities. I'm not sure what to expect regarding ... read more

Leaving Conarkry, the first vehicle I travelled in poisoned me with fumes, in the second car the wheels fell off! OK , I tell a lie, it was only the one wheel. I've left Guinea now, but this blog is going to about the journey from Conarkry across the country to the border with Mali. I also had to give up on this blog at the first attempt because of illness. FRIDAY 4th FEBRUARY At this stage I was still in the capital Conakry. I changed hotels for somewhere half the price I had been in the day before. The Hotel Galaxie also has a much better location - right in the centre of Kaloum on 5th Avenue. I wandered around and visited the Marche Niger. The market sells everything. In general the city centre juxtaposes ... read more

Tuesday 8th February When we woke up, Jon-Erik had already left for work. I have forgotten how hot it gets in Moshi, and as our bodies were used to the bleak English winter, we found the night quite sweaty. Scott was still not well, he was very bunged up and sort of swollen in the face, but he had no temperature so we decided he would definitely have a go at visiting ISM later in the morning. Anja is much better at coping with the heat, but Scott finds it hard, so maybe this was one reason as well why he wasn’t very responsive, but living in his own world, behaving like the teenager he is. Harriet amused me when we made breakfast, as she doesn't really know this kitchen well. Jon-Erik's house is very nice, ... read more

Monday 7th February Sleeping in these semi permanent tents is great. You get the feeling of being under canvas but it still feels safe and secure as there is a proper roof and a raised floor. The tents at Kisima Ngeda had very comfortable beds, unlike the ones we used to have in Mikumi National Park, when we stayed at that camp in the 70s. We adored this camp and there was always lots of wildlife right around the tents. But the beds were terrible and there was perhaps a little too much wildlife inside as well. I don't mind the bats and I can handle mice running over my sheets, but beetles, cockroaches and centipedes sharing your bed are more difficult to accept! We had breakfast at 8 am as usual. Another glorious morning with ... read more

After one more overnight stay in Dar es Salaam, we headed North for another night in Tanga. It was nice to be familiar with the place upon arrival. After a 9-hour, uneventful bus ride, we arrived at 9 pm and had our choice of taxis. As it turned out, our driver was instrumental to our functioning over the next couple of days. We went back to the Inn By The Sea, otherwise referred to as the ‘Inn By The Theives’ because someone stole our binoculars from our room last time. Still it was the easiest and cheapest place to stay. We were just more careful. We spent our time in Tanga taking care of business - planning our trip to the Island of Pemba, emailing, posting cards, co-ordinating boat and bus tickets, etc. Everything takes about ... read more

Sunday 6th February. Anyone who has stayed in a camp is aware of 'early morning tea'. This is a wake-up call before dawn, for people wanting to go on a morning drive in the park. This morning we got up before we were able to get early morning tea, which could not be served earlier than 6 am. We had our alarm clocks on for 5.40am. It turned out to be only us four adults going, as Harriet's youngsters thought there were too few animals around to warrant getting up at that un-godly hour, and of my two one was ill and the other impossible to wake! Imagine if you will getting dressed in the cold morning, needing a torch to get to the car, shivering and trying not to make any noise as all sound ... read more
