Geo: -12.8546, 31.311I am sure some pictures can be found for this story. Did our regular walk and the day before Robert had asked Bryan, one of the regular vegetable suppliers if he had any groundnuts. Why, of course, and so Robert asked for a heap. The next day as we were finishing our walk up comes Bryan with two huge bags of groundnuts(peanuts)! Guess we will have plenty to eat when we have sundowners!Lots of animals across the river and in the afternoon there was a large group of elephants that crossed the river from the park side and a couple of the young ones were playing in the river before finally coming to shore. They would stand up and then fall over backwards and then do it again. When they finally got out they ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Another day but with some new adventures. Went on our regular walk and found out that Retha was going to the airport and we caught a ride with her. They are starting to work on the road closer to the airport. While we were driving out there, they were tearing up the road and it was hard to decide exactly where to be driving.Got to the airport, changed money and then got to visit with Geoffrey from Flatdogs while we were waiting for Retha to finish her business. Got back on the road and it was amazing to see how much they had cleared on the road in the tine it took us to get things done.Stopped at Mayana and got some frozen meats and spent most of the money we had just changed! ... read more

We have now seen the big three - waterfalls that is. Iguazzu, Victoria and Niagara. Victoria seems to create its own climate. From the hotel we could see the mist rising in the air. We walked down to the falls in brilliant warm sunshine, taking photos as we went particularly of th,many rainbows that seemed to appear and disappear frequently. Suddenly we had to don our ponchos as the water felt like rain falling. It was hard to keep the cameras dry but somehow we managed to take some very unattractive photos of several of us disguised as "drowned rats". Two days later we got some different views of the falls from a helicopter. What an experience. It was a 12 seater. I was strapped in a,,t the side with fellow traveller, Julie and we thought ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311all day safari to the Nsefu sectorLast year when we were here, the river was low enough we were able to cross into the Nsefu sector from the main part of the park and then back into the park. This year it is much earlier and we had to drive to one of the entrances to the Nsefu sector which means you have to drive through Mfuwe and once you turn onto the road to Nsefu you still have 19 kilometres to go! As a result it took almost an hour to get there. You pass through many of the outlying villages that are not part of the Mfuwe town as I can understand. You also pass through an area where they are growing cotton which of course is not very self-sustaining. The cotton ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Still no eland and we stopped and had our nice lunch and then headed out again. Some of the usual repartee between Dora and James about finding some lions and so on. We went by the hot springs. Evidently they used to discharge much more water than is coming out at present but still pretty amazing in the middle of no where there is hot water bubbling up out of a pipe. Robert and James got out and washed their faces and let us take some pictures. Then we found some buffalo and then a larger herd and James is on high alert! Drives to the edge of a riverbank and there are two female lions resting on the sand. One of them has a collar and appears to have been nursing cubs. This is ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311What a day!Got up and were having our coffee and at 6:15 a.m., the leopard comes out across the way and goes down to drink some water. Our neighbors had seen the leopard in the evening just before sunset one evening but we were too late to see it. We were able to see it clearly and it did seem to be on edge and nervous looking around. Of course the guinea fowl were screaming to beat the band so can't blame it! Drank water and then walks the bluff for quite a ways before disappearing into the bush.We decided to do our walk. Before we went on our walk, we could see Barry and his son heading off on their walk on the GMA(Game Management Area). We headed over to the chalets and ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Back to the camp and fix our dinner for after the sundowner with the lions. As we head out we come across a nice size herd of buffalo moving across the GMA and then we come up on the kill and there are l3 lions there. One of the lions decides to head back into the park. She has to cross the water and in one place it was fairly deep and she is jumping and moving as fast as she can. Look behind her and there is a crocodile swimming toward her. No drama, thankfully! We are watching the pride and Conrad explains that one of them is collared and this is why they know much about them. There is the very old female, Stumpy, so called because she is missing most of her ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Today was a fairly low key day. Enjoyed sitting on the riverbank watching the sights of the early morning drinking our cup of coffee. We then took our usual walk and at one point had to go inside the eating area in the chalets because there was a elephant on the lawn. Came fairly close before Magoo walked out and shooed it away. While we were sitting there enjoying looking down at the lagoon, two more young male elephants had come into view. They were jousting with each other and you could hear their ivory clacking. Did not see who was the victor or if one of them did indeed place his trunk and tusks on the other ones back.Worked on stories at the overland lapa. Signal would come in and out but we were ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311On the evening drive, it was only the two of us and the father/son from Michigan who had come to this camp after climbing Kilamanjaro. We had some interesting conversation about teaching and some of what he had being doing with Project Luangwa. He had been working with Karen and was a teacher back in Michigan. The first thing we saw were two young male elephants jousting. The big insult is for the victor to place his trunk and tusks on the other ones back. Never saw the final conclusion of the jousting. Saw some nice giraffe, ground hornbills, zebra as we were driving along. Stopped and had our sundowner on the Mushilashi River dry bed. Conrad said that if you dig down into the sand you can find water and this is what ... read more

Geo: -12.895, 31.9228AM driveWe were in with part of the overland truck group. They were the ones that had not gone the night before and we were with Conrad. He had us write our names down so it was a much smoother and quicker check-in. First thing we saw was the old buffalo, "kukuli" or old strong man. Name that was given to Norman Carr by the locals. Stopped at the Mfuwe Lodge lagoon and saw the white crowned coucal, cardinal woodpecker and a few other birds. From there we moved on down the road and heard the guineas alerting. Could not see anything and drove on. But, there was something there.....a leopard. Found this out later. Something to pay attention to. If you hear the guineas alerting, don't brush them off because there were two ... read more
