Geo: -12.8546, 31.311As mentioned in the earlier story about the leopards, we had come across a herd of zebra grazing. They were very beautiful and quite healty looking when we noticed one of them had a bad cut on it rear. James said the wound looked quite fresh and that the lions were probably somewhere nearby. We drove on a little further, turned the corner and there were a bunch of safari vehicles looking at something. There they were, five lions scattered out on the grass in the shade near a lagoon. They were part of the same pride we have been seeing and one of the females had a collar on. They seemed to be just relaxing and possibly cooling off. We then noticed there was a puku down in the edge of the lagoon looking ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311night drive with leopards and hyena and story of the witchFor the evening drive, it was the same group as the morning drive and we had Lameck as our spotter. As we started off we went by the place we had seen the young leopards and saw one of them on the group near the tree. Once again, if you did not know there was a leopard there, it was almost impossible to see. From there we came upon a giant eagle owl sitting in a tree. Unfortunately, our group had some that were not as interested in birds as we were or some of the people in other vehicles. From there we drove on toward the lagoon by Mfuwe Lodge. One end of the lagoon has a red algae growth and we watched a large ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311According to the Zambia calendar, today was National Farmers Day and there would be some celebration in Mfuwe but at the camp it was elephant day. Last year when we were here, there were many days when we had elephants around and many nights when there were elephants. Part of the reason was the mangoes were ripe and they were coming to eat. This year there seemed to be quite a few elephants in the area. Conrad had been putting water into the lagoon between the campground and the Barefoot camp and this was attracting some elephants to our viewing pleasure. The problem for the campground was when they decided to move through to get back down to the river and cross back into the park. That morning when we got up and had our coffee ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Got back from our trip to bush camp and there were some people in our campsite on the other side of our "office" picnic table. This was not too bad because we still had our view but they had a fire in the fire pit not 6 feet from our tent which was not good! They had stuff all around the braii pit but all seemed ok.Sitting at the table with our computers up and running and up walks a young man that introduces himself as Adam. He is one of the campers along with three others that are in the park at present. We talk for a minute and assure him it is ok for them to be camped there but NO FIRES in the firepit because of smoke for one thing but ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Had gone back to our tent area and George and Grivaljo were getting ready to take our picnic table. Asked where they were going and said one of the overland groups needed it. Explained this was our "office" and we needed that table and they could get one from the Barefoot camp. After that took one of our rope locks and locked it to the lapa! It also helped define our space.Where else can you work on your travel blog and look up and see wildlife right there for your viewing enjoyment. Kudu, giraffe, impala, warthogs, and many elephants crossing the river for us to enjoy. On occasion have had to interrupt our blogging to seek safety as an elephant passes through!Great job, this is. Of course the sunset is a real bonus here. ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311A Walk on the wide side or our trip to the bush camp. Got up the next morning after our all day drive and got thing together for our trip out to the bush camp to spend the night. There is a vehicle that will take your overnight things so all you need to have with you on the walk is your camera, water, hat etc.We had turned in our order to make sure they had red wine out there for dinner. We were joined by Christian from Switzerland and two ladies, one a translator for a woman on safari with the group the translator was from. They spoke German so it was an interesting walk, hearing Moses, our guide, tell us something and then hear it be translated into German. Actually got the ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Since it was just Dora, Sue, Albert and us we left pretty much on time. Dora had decided we wouldhead in the general direction of Lion Camp. We drove over near the river where we had seen the lions from the bush camp side and there they were lying about here and there. At first it was hard to see and then started spotting them scattered about. Once again, they are so easy to overlook if they are lying down and hidden by a some of the grasses. As we were driving over, we saw some ground hornbill that surprised us by flying away from us. They were quite beautiful to see. While we were watching up drives this huge overland looking truck that is just for individuals. Dora is incensed. Rightly so, since they ... read more

Kabwe Warriors.

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311drive to bush camp elephant eating from winterthorn tree and lion kill on the sandUp and decided to go on our regular walk and Patrick and Verena asked if they could go along. Sure, why not? So off we head toward reception and the chalets. Ran into Conrad and he was getting ready to go out to the bush camp to deliver some firewood and pick up the people that were staying overnight at the camp. Hopped into the vehicle and off we went.We came upon a very large elephant feeding and we stopped to watch him. He then moved on to a winter thorn tree which is one of those trees the elephants love to eat! Problem for the elephant was that the limbs were too far for him to reach. No problem ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Up early but held up because we had people from the chalets with us as well as Patrick and Verena. The other people in the vehicle were an Italian couple with two small children. They were sitting in the very back seat and we were in the middle and Patrick and Verena in the front seat. One of the first things we saw was an elephant lifting up on its back legs to eat some of the winterthorn branches and leaves that were out of his reach on the ground. It was so awesome to see this happen. Italian father stands up and hangs out of the vehicle and was asked not to do this but was slow to respond and not do it again. Unfortunately when he did this the elephant false charged our ... read more
