Geo: -17.8573, 25.8429Maun to Livingston 27 October - 8th NovemberOn the Namibia/Botswana border we stayed at Ghanzi camp in San country. The San people (bushmen) of the desert are fascinating. Their life, like that of most aboriginal people, is changing quickly. It is more difficult if not impossible to remain nomadic as their children have to attend school. However, they want their children to retain the Bushman skills so they go off into the bush whenever they can. They move around the Ghanzi camp area and our guide arranged for a group to take us for a walk and show us some of their skills. Robert from the camp came to interpret as these San do not speak any English. What I really liked was the San spoke to us directly, and we to them asking ... read more

Geo: -17.8573, 25.8429Our objective in Zambia was to visit the world famous Victoria Falls- while it is neither the highest nor the widest waterfall in the world, it is classified as the largest, based on its width of 1,708 metres and height of 108 metres, resulting in the world's largest sheet of falling water. Victoria Falls is roughly twice the height of North America's Niagara Falls. English explorer Dr. Livingston (he of the "Dr Livingston I Presume" fame), was the first European to see the Mosi-oa-Tunya ("the smoke that thunders") waterfall (which he renamed Victoria Falls after Queen Victoria) so it was appropriate that we use Livingston, Zambia as our base. The Zambezi River, upstream from the falls, experiences a rainy season from late November to early April, and a dry season the rest of the ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311From our facebook post:Robert smiles nervously, night before last, during our last night in Wildlife Camp, South Luangwa, Zambia...... We decided on a final splurge of going to dinner in the beautiful Wildlife Camp restaurant. We walked from the campsite before it got too dark and dangerous. We ordered wine, Victor and Joel brought our meal and it was delicious as always. We had almost finished our excellent meal when Robert looked up and noticed a very large elephant was one meter (3 feet) away eating the tamarind fruit that the monkeys had knocked to the ground! The staff had gone to pick up food for the other two early guests at the kitchen, but when they came back Joel expertly moved guests to a safe distance warning that the animal was unpredictable and ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311lThis was going to be our last game drive because we were going to be leaving on the 12th. We got up and were rewarded with a beautiful full moon setting over the river. Started late because we were in with chalet people who are given a small breakfast before setting off.As we got ready to head into the park, there was a safari vehicle that was having trouble. James stops to help them and manages to get their vehicle going but put us late getting into the park. Oh well, such is life .There was a nice group of hippos and then elephants heading into the river from the bank as we crossed the river. Enjoyed them for awhile and then headed into the park. First animals we saw were the Thornicroft giraffe. ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Now that we have seen the wild dogs/painted wolves, what could make this morning drive even more adventuresome? James picks up the tracks of lions all over the road. He stops and shows us the tracks and sure enough, it does look like a lot of lion tracks. He starts heading toward Lion Camp on the hunt. Side note: We had passed some other vehicles that were on the side of the road observing different wildlife and they fell in behind us and were taking advantage of James' expertise in guiding. Of course, we did this very thing while we were in Kruger!Come around a corner and there are two lions lying on the ground. They are a large male and female and are getting ready to mate. Were still in the preliminary stages so ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Our last night drive and we have a full moon to enjoy it with. We have some new neighbors from Germany that are a little on the opinionated about many things such as the United States and people in Africa. It was mainly one of the men but did get a little tiresome and was glad to find out they were not in our vehicle for the night drive. It was a full vehicle and I was in the middle but for the first part of the drive I had Lameck, the spotter sitting next to me. One of the new people that had joined us, four girls, wanted to sit in the front seat next to James. Pretty dusty place to sit in my opinion.Saw some nice game as we began the trip and ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Elephants are one of those animals you never tire of watching. At one moment so majestic and then another quite playful in the water. The elephants were quite plentiful while we were camping at Wildlife Camp. There were even some days when you were not able to walk everywhere because the elephants were also walking about. This was a beautiful scene of a solitary elephant as it headed down the sand stopping to eat the sparse grass and other vegetation it found there. The scene was made more beautiful by the sunset as the back drop to this wonderful elephant.Such is part of the daily life at Wildlife Camp. You never know what animal might decide to share your sunset view.... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311We were lucky and got to go to Flatdogs twice during our time in South Luangwa. The first time was with Albert and Sue for an afternoon and then we treated Conrad and Retha to dinner and got to have some time visiting with Aide and Jess.Unfortunately, at present, our pictures of our evening there are somewhere in the ethers and hope they will appear sometime soon.Still it was a lovely evening. We had a sundowner after Jess and Aide had seen their guests off on their evening drives. We then moved over to a table for dinner. Both Jess and Aide are quite the foodies and the menu reflects their love of a good meal especially curries.Of course, the menu here is a testament to the love of good food and well prepared ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Going on another game drive am and pm with James. Were joined by Mauro from Italy who is traveling around the world on motorcycle. He is working with Lions Clubs and others to raise money for children with various types of needs. Quite the character. We were also joined by Pierre and Laura from Australia. Seemed like it was going to be a good group to be out with.Got to the South Luangwa river and learned something new. It is the only undammed river in Zambia and the hippo is related to the whale and dolphin. Hard to get your head around that! Headed off down one of the side roads and saw vehicles stopped looking. Tried to see what they were looking at and were told there were two young leopards. Took awhile ... read more
