Geo: -12.895, 31.9228The All Day Safari with Dora, Guillame, James. Our guide was also named James, one of the great Wildlife Camp safari guides and on this day he was absolutely 110% lucky, skillful, funny and fun. Great job, James Different from Flatdogs because this one lasts from 6am until 4pm with lunch included. Other difference was that we did not have a siesta time but got back on the road after our leisurely lunch. They came to pick us up at around 5:45 and we were off. It was nice and cool in the morning so I did not put my long sleeved shirt on instead enjoyed being cool because I knew it was not going to last all day!As we were heading out to the park, Dora the wonderful WC Camp manager started right in ... read more

Geo: -12.895, 31.9228This story is mainly pictures from that incredible all-day drive when we saw the 35 lions total! The first group we saw consisted a 14 lions in two groups; one next to a tree and the other part of this pride under a bush nearby. They were obviously resting and only some of them bothered to look up but the ones that looked up were quite impressive! From this group we moved on to our lunch spot where we got the added lunch time entertainment of 3 lions down near the waters edge one of which was a large male lion. The last group numbered l8 and they were also resting in what shade they could find. Some of them did stand up and move around and gave us the eye several times. In all of our ... read more

Geo: -12.895, 31.9228On the morning drive we had the vehicle to ourselves and our first time with Billy. It was a spectacular "birding day" for us. The first bird we saw very near the Mfuwe lagoon was the Western banded snake eagle. Getting better at identifying first by the shape of the head and then onto looking at the legs. It does not have feathers on its legs but rather has scales which help protect it from snakes biting it. (believe this is the way the story goes)Billy asked if it would be ok if we tried out some roads he had not been down. They are opening some new roads here and there and we thought it would be nice to see some new areas as well. We were greatly rewarded for doing so.We were ... read more

Geo: -12.895, 31.9228We had James as our guide for this drive. We were joined by James from England that had been working at a bat preserve in Zambia. It sounded like an interesting place because in October I believe millions of fruit bats come into this place. This was a last adventure before he had to go back to school at Oxford. Also Guillame (William) from Paris, France. We were also joined by Erica, Vanessa and Veronica from South Africa. We had been sharing the kitchen with them and so this was a very jolly bunch.Got ourselves signed in and first thing we saw was a young female leopard. When we first drove up you could not see the leopard because she was in the grass but then she went over and laid down on the ... read more

Geo: -12.895, 31.9228Western Spotted Bush Snake/We call one of the lapas for the overland trucks our "office." We are able to plug in and we have been fairly successful in getting a signal most days. One day Robert was sitting at the table when he heard a noise and a snake dropped down from the top of the hut and landed on the cross beam with a gecko in his mouth. We had been shown this snake earlier by Grivaljo and he called it a western spotted bush snake or common house snake. I guess this means it is not of the poisonous variety. The poor gecko began to bite the snake on the neck but it seemed this was a losing battle and sure enough, down the hatch the little gecko went. We have seen this same ... read more

Geo: -12.895, 31.9228Wow! Great birthday in Africa. I had celebrated my birthday in Africa many years ago but this was the first time in many years that we were here for my birthday. I think I would prefer to be here for Robert's birthday because it is much cooler in June than it is in September.Word had gotten out that it was my birthday and so the workers, guides, everyone was wishing me a happy birthday. I really did feel quite special. The animals were also cooperating. The first thing I saw getting out of the tent was a group of elephants crossing the river and then a Golaith heron walking down the riverbank. Robert had gotten up and fixed the coffee that morning for by birthday. The rest of the day was spent being quite lazy. The ... read more

Geo: -12.895, 31.9228Here at Wildlife Camp we do not find ourselves sleeping too late in the morning. We roll the rainfly up on the sides of the tent so the cool air can find its way into the tent during the night. By the early morning hours, we usually find ourselves under our sheet and a few times we have even used our lightweight blanket as well.So our early morning routine is to have Laura go make coffee and Robert drop the sides of the tent and retie all the guy wires. On this particular morning Laura went off and made the coffee. Was heading back to their tent where they usually sit and check out the bluff on the other side and see what they can see. Heard the "whistle" and turned to see Robert ... read more

Geo: -12.895, 31.9228It is amazing some of things that happen around the wildlife camp. You can spend an entire day just sitting and watching the area right in front of us and across the river. There is always something going on. Sometimes it is just the ordinary behavior of the animals coming down for a drink of water, a cool refreshing splash in the river, or grazing along the bank. But there are some days when it is more exciting than others such as when the elephants cross the river and come into camp or the lions are up taking a stroll down the bank in your view!Robert went over to the reception to sign us up for another morning and evening game drive. When he got over there, he was told Retha was going to the ... read more

Geo: -12.895, 31.9228PM DriveOn the evening drive, it was Stuart and Lorna again and we were joined by Martin who is currently living in South Africa but was born in Zambia. He was able to the local dialect/language and Joseph was surprised when he started talking to him. No more talking about us because he can understand and tell us! :)His father was a missionary and took Martin to South Luangwa when he was about 12 years old. Of course it has changed a great deal since that time. At that time, the rhino was still found in this part of the park and he told of being on a camping trip and standing by the fire and turning in a complete circle and seeing over 17 species of mammals. It was a quiet evening for the ... read more

Geo: -12.895, 31.9228Managed to get up and get ready in spite of the fact it was so nice and cool inside the tent and it sure did feel like a day for sleeping rather than getting up and going on safari but knew that was going to be fun as well. Our safari guide for today was Joseph, who has been a guide for 4 years and is another interesting character. We were joined in the morning safari by Stuart and Lorna who had lived for the past twenty years in Llongwe, Malawi. One of the things they do there is operate a bar/ restaurant called Chameleons. They were much like us and seemed to think anything we saw was going to be great!Did the usual checking in at the park entrance and then crossed the river. ... read more
