5 Dec - The outdoors has a strange effect on Nigel - he becomes an early riser or it could be that his blow-up mattress has a hole in it and it deflates during the night, but the point is that this is starting to feel like a bloody boot camp. When the idea was proposed to me I am sure it said it was a holiday which reads - loads of rest and relaxation. No, in our case before the sun has even risen, although it has been overcast so I haven't seen it most times, I am ordered out of my bed to attend to camp duty. Nigel's comment is - I can't believe how lazy Carmen is - lollying about in her fully inflated mattress when things have to be done. Best sightings ... read more

Hi everyone! Sorry to be out of touch for so long- we have literally been in the bush for the past three weeks, without internet access and with only one very shotty spot on a hill where you could get phone reception. Is it terrible that its a relief to be back to modern civilization? In anycase, for the past few weeks we were volunteering in a very rural village called Sichili. It was very isolated, and so pretty interesting (especially compared to the village we stayed in in Kenya) in that was quite removed from Western influence. It was also a very beautiful place, what one might imagine as traditional Africa. We were with four other Australians and our British group leader. Everyone was really nice and made the experience much more enjoyable. The volunteer ... read more

Leg three: Southern Africa. We spent our first week in the self-proclaimed adrenalin-junkie capital of Zambia, Livingstone town. The backpackers here was great - pretty swimming pool and bar area and lots of chill-out zones with pillows. In between working hard at doing absolutely nothing, we also managed to fit in some of the area's many activities. Top of the list is a visit to Victoria Falls. Only after we arrived in Zambia, however, did we realize that, as it is the end of dry season, the falls were not exactly at their peak. In fact, in many parts the mighty Vic Falls looked more like the not-so-mighty Vic Trickle! The advantage of this was that we actually got to walk along the top of the falls and look down over where the water is supposed ... read more

After our mammoth three day Lusaka - Kitwe - Lusaka - Livingstone tour we finally arrived at Jollyboys backpackers in Livingstone. Very relieved to not be on a bus and very happy to arrive at such a fab hostel - which couldn't have been more of a contrast to the place in Lusaka. Livingstone is the base for visiting Victoria Falls on the Zambian side. Next morning we headed out to the falls. It's the tail end of the dry season and we had been warned that there wasn't a lot of water on the Zambian side. Apparently the Zimbabwean side still has more and is more spectacular, but for us Brits the Zim visa is USD65 and we weren't about to cough up that just to see some more water. In full spate the falls ... read more

Hi Everyone I will try over the next few days to complete this small travel blog, detailing where we have been and some photos. Unfortunately, we are back home already and have gone back to work so that we haven't had time to think or respons. Hi everyone We SURVIVED! The elephants on the Okovango didn't eat or trample us, the weather has been in the most part good to us, and we managed to survive the camping experience, although we wondered the other day when the skies opened up and it poured and poured! We had to take down the tents in the rain. IK!! We are in Livingstone today and flying back to Jo'burg tomorrow. This morning we went over the Zimbabwe border from Zambia to view the falls from the Zim side. Well!!!!!!!The difference is like chalk and cheese! The Zam side is quite dry and fairly ordinary but the Zim side - (when we got there - only about 5 kms away, but we had to go through one hour of border formalities and $30 US pp and ... read more

I woke up this morning with a determined air about me "Today" I said to myself "Today I go to Zambia" anyway after breakfast/shower/water bottle topping up I was off trundling through town feeling the temperature gradually rise as I did so (I left at about 8:00 and it was already getting HOT) I arrived at the border and had my leaving Zimbabwe stamp by the bored looking immigration chap, I then walked the roughly 400 km's of "no mans land" between Zimbabwe and Zambia...."No Man's Land" HA it totally belongs to beggars and purveyors of crappy ornaments....Anyway me and several hundred Africans (I was the only white person in sight OH YEAH go me i'm a real traveler) eventually reached the Zambian border post where I used my lack of melatonin to jump the queue ... read more

I was one of 10 lucky teachers to be sent by my school to a PYP training conference in Lusaka, Zambia. The conference ran from Thurs-Sat in October, which meant that it ended right when our school's October break began. As the flights and visa were already paid for by the school, for the conference, a group of us decided to extend our tickets and spend our break down in Livingstone, exploring Victoria Falls and the Zambezi river. The conference itself was quite beneficial, and I definitely left it with a better understanding of the PYP (Primary Years Programme- our curriculum at IST), and with some new contacts at schools in various other cool places. My host, Jackie, was awesome and definitely made sure that I was well fed, rested, and saw the good times to ... read more

Another week in Livingstone….what have I done this week? A whole new crop of volunteers came, about ten of them, so it’s been a bit of an adjustment - 3 new girls at Mambo, a Scot and 2 Germans, the house is no longer the American house. One of my housemates had to flee the country - his visa expired and he had to cross over to Zimbabwe - probably the first white person to flee TO Zimbabwe in the past ten years. He just had to spend one night out of Zambia so he was back in the morning. I might have already written about this but I don’t think so. There was a pedestrian / taxi accident that I got to assist with at Maramba Clinic. The pedestrian went headfirst through the windshield of ... read more

So we did the bungee and survived! We couldnt do it together coz we just over the weight limit so we did separately - Chris went first (also first jumper of the day so tested out the ropes!!) and seemed very calm and collected - the model jumper! Then I went and did the complete opposite! I was absolutely pooing myself - couldnt jump so kinda just fell! Everyone was wetting themselves as you could hear my screams on the over other side of Zambia i think!! It was amazing tho! We then ended up doing the gorge swing which is a bit like bungee but you step off the ledge and fall sitting down - we did that one together and it was ace -we didnt think it wud be that bad but it made ... read more
