The final day of the holiday arrived all too soon - well, it was 06h15! After a breakfast of cornflakes, yoghurt and toast, we decided that this was Zambian cuisine at its best and went to check out. By 08h00, we’d unhooked the trailer and were heading towards the Victoria Falls. Before we’d even got close, the spray was incredible; it’s no surprise that David Livingstone was drawn to these very waters. Even at this hour, the temperature was soaring and so we stopped well before the falls to look at the view towards them. The Zambezi looked so calm as it raced towards the immense gash in the Earth’s surface. However, only a fool (or someone with a barrel) would even consider swimming close to such a torrent. Parking the 4x4 under some trees, Brian, ... read more

Fri 7th march - set off at 7am - a few sore heads around! Stopped in Malawi's capital Lilongwe for supermarket and a Nando's lunch! After a bit of a wait at the border we crossed into Zambia. Instantly the surroundings became visibly wealthier - nice cars and shops etc. A big change from Malawi - the poorest country in Africa. Stopped to get some 'Kwacha' from the ATM. Long drive today - over 600km on very bad roads. Eventually arrived at 'Mama Rulas' campsite, set in lovely gardens. Most of us were in bed for 9pm after curry dinner! Alarm at 5am to set off at 6 - our earliest start yet! Stopped after a few hours at a big shopping centre on the outskirts of Lusaka and bought some snacks at the 'Spar' - ... read more

Hello!!!! Sorry it has been ages since my last blog. I have not had internet or phone reception for over a week. I am now in Livingstone, Zambia and have lots to catch up on....Where to start.... Zanzibar! What an amazing island!!! it was one of the most beautiful places ive seen. It really does not look real in the sense that its ridiculously beautiful!!! We had four days there where we pretty much just lazed around on the beach, ate, sunbaked, ate some more, drank, swam, snorkled and on our last night we did a sunset cruise which was really nice. Alot of people got really sunburnt and aparently i became the sun police : ) After reluctantly leaving our beautiful island paradise we made our way into Malawi where we spent around 3-4 days ... read more

Arriving in Africa Zambia border crossing We arranged our African adventure with the adventure travel company 2Africa. A transfer had been arranged from Livingstone, Zambia to Chobe Safari Lodge in Botswana. Unfortunately, no one was there to meet us at the small airport in Livingstone. After talking this over with a couple of taxi drivers, the consensus was that we needed to hire a taxi to take us to the border crossing at the Kasane ferry. We would enter Botswana and find transprotation to Chobe there. Hopefully. OK. Sounds like a plan. Our driver was a women. None of the men wanted to take the fare. We settled on a rate and off we went. The drive took about an hour. We went through Zambian customs and got our tickets for the ferry. Our driver explained ... read more

Stopping briefly (45 minutes) at Victoria Falls (just writing that sounds ridiculous - I have no idea why people designing these trips think that 45 minutes is enough time to appreciate one of the world's natural wonders) was a bad start to a worse five days spent in Zambia. While I am certain that Zambia is a lovely country with a lot going for it, my lasting memories will be of one thing - rain, rain and more rain! Upon arrival at our campsite we stared out the windows of the overland truck at the muddy lake where we were supposed to pitch our tents. After staring incredulously at our tour leader for a moment (and waiting for the punch line that never came), we roused ourselves from the truck and went for a quick tour ... read more

i'm writing this eating a loaf of bread from the market as my breakfast in true backpacker style, just ripping off chunks. so i need to fill everyone in about what i did for christmas. you've seen a few of teh pictures, it was definitely not a traditional one! the friday before christmas kennedy and i got transport to mukuni village - that's the "main" village around livingstone - it's where the chief stays, cheif mukuni, and it has a few small stores, some bars, basically where other villages go to get staples like mealie meal (used to make nshima), oil, salt, sugar, beer... so we did a little shopping of our own, bought gifts for his grandmother and mom and a few other people. the lady behind the counter looked at me dubiously and wondered ... read more

just wanted to let everyone know that i'm still alive in livingstone, i know i haven't written in ages... it's now the rainy season, which means lots of bottomless puddles to avoid and loads of delicious mangoes - i usually pick one each morning for my breakfast, i'm getting quite adept at peeling with my teeth. so i don't have time to write loads, i'm meeting a friend in town soon...but a few highlights... my birthday - bbq at a friends place with my roommates and friends (nshima and chicken), lots of dancing, good music, buckets of water being poured on me gorge swing - freefall for 50 meters, or 3.5 seconds, then huge swings until being lowered down. intensely scary, so much so that i went to the bathroom about 5 times before actually voluntarily ... read more

Victoria Falls is known as the adrenaline capital of Africa. It has one of the highest bungee jumps in the world, the Devils Armchair (a pool right on TOP of the falls, gorge swinging and white-water rafting. We wanted to indulge in every activity offered, and definitely enjoyed quite a few! One of the highlights was white-water rafting on the Zambezi River. The rapids were way more than we bargained for! It took our "team" three tries to get through the very first rapid, the Boiling Pot. We all applauded ourselves when we finally made it through. On the biggest rapid called The Mother, our boat flipped over and we all spilled out into the river. All the lessons we learned during "orientation" were quickly forgotten as we went careening through the river in varying states ... read more
